A Girl Suffering from Life Destroying Laser Damage Finds Hope - Beverly Hills, CA

ORIGINAL POST

So let me just say this, as of yet I am no longer...

So let me just say this, as of yet I am no longer a huge fan of lasers. Initially, I had some crepiness and fine lines under my eyes and my esthetician raved about a laser procedure called "mixto" which is a CO2 laser. I trusted her and really did not understand the significance but I went for it. After the first treatment, I was a HUGE fan. OMG lasers are it. Well.....I let some time go by then I got greedy. Being only 30 years old I really did not understand the significance of CO2 or how serious or PERMANENT it could be. I was starting an endodontic residency and knew that I would be short on money for skin care, so why not go big? I had a friend who is an OCCULOPLASTIC SURGEON who was supposedly specializing in this procedure. Anyways, she never guided me otherwise and in fact told me it was a great idea! So I got the treatment..... Instead of the downtime of a few days like my first it was a downtime of 2 weeks. This is for MINOR lines and smoothing mind you... It oozed, it swelled, it was awful. Well I thought this would produce excellent results, instead after it healed I noticed that something was not right. My eyelids were hard, they were stuck down to my face, my midface was completely absent and I was convinced that I lost ALL the fat in my midface around my eyes and temples. My boyfriend told me it was all in my head, the scaring was honestly so tight that if you didn't look at me from the side you probably couldn't have even noticed because its not like my face even moved anymore. Not only that but I was left with hyperpigmentation just about as dark as a mole. I still hadnt fully registered the damage at this point...I thought I was going crazy. I went back to the physician and mentioned to her that I thought something wasn't right, that things were too tight, that I was scarring and that this was unlike the first procedure I had. She basically told me that hyperpigmentation is normal, made me buy a few products and sent me out the door. Things kept getting worse...I would look in the mirror and I did not recognize myself anymore. My eyes very tiny looking, my eyeballs protruding, when I closed my eyes there was such significant scarring that my once upturned almond eyes were now turned upside down and looked sad. I still thought maybe it was all in my head at this point so I decided to pay a visit to another occuloplastic surgeon whom I had seen prior to all of this. He took one look at me and I thought he was going to pass out, I started crying. Thats when I really knew that this wasn't all in my head. I was burned, significantly. The pain from the tightness was starting to set in. I checked myself out of life basically, only living to suffer through my day job as a dentist and wondering all day if others noticed. I was once a very social , outgoing, happy person. This changed overnight.

All I could do while going through this was scour the internet looking for solutions. The occuloplastic surgeon that confirmed the damage is a well renowned laser expert and he basically told me, theres nothing that can be done. We can try to add filler and see if we can give the appearance of normalcy. I looked sick, I felt sick. I have never been the same.

In my search I found a Dr. Jason Emer that really stood out in his expert answers, seeming very confident. I researched him extensively, looked at every review. Pondered it, scared that it could only get worse. But I could not live with it anymore. I decided to contact the office. I live in Nashville TN and I was willing to try anything, go anywhere. I got a skype consultation and sent Dr. Emer photos. He called me. The best call of my life thus far. He simply said, your friend burned you. I wish you had contacted me sooner, there's so much I could have done for you. Mind you it had been 8 months of ABSOLUTE hell prior to this. He confidently gave me a treatment plan and told me that he would do everything in his power to help me.

I stressed out for the next several weeks. I almost did not go. I was convinced I was not going to do anything. But he insisted when I was there that it couldn't make it any worse. I HAD TO TRY. He was so pro while he was doing it, you could tell he knew what he was doing. They gave me products and sent me on my way. I woke up the next morning expecting to die AGAIN but surprisingly, I felt LESS pain. The discoloration really wasn't that bad, which was surprising after my major laser debacle. Then things started to change, I saw all kinds of gross things happening...things unwinding. If you don't know what I'm talking about theres zero percent chance you could comprehend this. Your face is literally stretching, its disgusting. Fat I thought was gone was slowly filling in and things were starting to lift. I went back to the occuloplastic surgeon in Nashville for my filler post op and didn't tell him what I had done just to see his reaction. He was surprised to see things opening up and told me that he was ACTUALLY cautiously optimistic. But it was still bad, and it still is.

By the time I am done fixing this damage that I only spent $500 to inflict I will have paid 100x that to remedy, I still will never look the same. Maybe the only benefit will be the hopefully long term positive effects that these lasers are doing for me. But I am still terrified of them, am the most difficult scared patient, and regularly don't sleep through the night thinking about the consequences.

My advice is, if you can avoid it, especially under the age of 35, please avoid it. If you can't go to the best, PLEASE do not go to anyone in the literal United states besides Jason Emer. As I mentioned before I have been a TERRIBLE patient. Nothing in my life has scared me more and I feel that I am trusting him with my future. Like my life literally depends on this working. So far I have had 2 sessions of fraxel dual, aerolase, and v-beam laser WITH microneedling and PRP. The settings are absolutely irrelevant because if your doctor knows what they are doing they will always customize the settings for every patient. Dr. Emer is very smart, very professional. He is sympathetic but to the point. He has a bright future ahead of him.

The road to recovery for me is extremely long and I still spend my days just absolutely obsessing over the details. I don't really know how I feel about the fraxel, it seems to be working for me. My experience is different though because my skin is literally burned to my underlying structures. Each treatment stimulates new skin to come through. This is going to be a lifelong process to fix but I feel confident despite how much Dr. Emer may want me to not be his patient.....I want him to be my doctor :) If you have concerns and are suffering from laser damage, I know you're reading this. I am about 4 months post my first treatment and 3 weeks post my second. I am terrified for the future, but maybe it will be great.

If you are thinking of getting into lasers, I honestly probably wouldn't recommend it. BUT I will keep you posted on my journey. Please do yourself a favor and at least talk to Dr. Emer, he is truly talented.

This is really amazing and will help so many people. Thank you for trusting me, for being honest and working through this despite all you have been through. I will be there for you the whole time! Dr. Emer.

I have been treated by Dr. Emer. He is IT! Never go to any salon place for work that should be done by a doctor with a lot of training. Including injections! Dr Emer is fantastic.

thank you for the nice comment!

Amazing story for sure and thank you so much for both posting. I live in Iowa and thought I was screwed after all my research in trying to find someone who could help me. I'm almost 6 weeks out from a botched procedure and I just called Dr Emers office today and am on the schedule for A Skype consult. Feeling hope for the first time that there could be some rectification or at least not get worse. Thanks both of you for sharing.

I just finished reading your post and feel so sad for you. It's a disgrace that some doctors are so careless with settings on these machines - with such devastating effects. I was also heartened to read that your subsequent treatment is showing good results. The only positive advice I can give you is that youth is on your side. Your skin will recover I feel certain. Are you able to start using a vitamin C serum and a Retin A cream treatment once you've completed the new laser course? I would highly recommend both as they will do wonders. In the mean time, use an intensive moisuriser day and night, use factor 50 (or higher) every day and wear a hat whenever you are outside. Wishing you the very best of luck from London, UK.

I also have laser damage and plan to see Dr. Emer December 9th. I am excited yet extremely nervous. The cost for treatment will be 4,500 :( . I am not rich so this is a huge gamble for me. I will also be traveling from NM to CAL. Fortunately, my father took pity on me and plans to pay for the trip and treatment. My treatment consist of Micro needling w PRP, Fraxel, and 1 syringe of Sculptra global to enhance Fraxel results. What are your thoughts and opinions? I'm getting cold feet.

I have thermal damage from Co2 laser, severe hyper pigmentation, fat loss, and dark scars from picking my skin. A nice gentleman referred to my face as "disfiguring." I knew it was bad but I never considered myself disfigured :( This laser treatment had ruined my self esteem and social life ... I pray Dr. Emer can offer some type of improvement.
November 25, 2016
don't be nervous! I am also flying out to see Dr Emer on 12/8. If you read all of his reviews, youtube videos and speak to other women in similar situations Dr Emer has so much experience with lasers, is progressive in his treatment plans and produces results consistently. i was scared initially but we do we have to lose? be hopeful my friend!

Hey Laser56, the only thing I can tell you from experience is that healing takes time. A LOT OF FREAKING TIME. It sucks. It also takes multiple treatments from my experience. I really started noticing a difference after my third treatment or about 4 months into the process. I don't think any of us will ever be "the same" but I would recommend serious therapy, some bible study, and good friends to get through it. It is absolutely debilitating. But every day I notice a bit more improvement, and thank GOD I am no longer in pain.

And y'all I know you're suffering but make sure to not take it out on him, I did that quite a bit at the beginning because I just really wanted my suffering to end and I was so out of touch with reality at that point. When you go through a trauma like this your entire mindset changes, and its hard to see any results because you want to see THE results. Keep me posted on your healing and your experiences through real self and if I can answer a question to spare his busy day, feel free to message me.

I just got back from California. Dr. Emer is a gem. Unfortunately his staff was snooty and failed to give me post treatment products. :( Can you tell me what products you are using for pigmentation?? When does the rough sandpaper look go away?? Sorry to bother. Oh and I was curious how long it took you to see results?

Progress

I have been seeing Dr. Emer on and off for over a year now. He has been great to me the whole time and been very responsive when I needed the help. So far I have done 4 fraxel Dual treatments on my eyes, 1 fraxel dual on my face and several microneedling appts, 2 with the clear and brilliant. I have had A LOT of progress but I also have a long way to go. It's so sad that one treatment can ruin you so much that you need like 10x the treatments just to "see improvement."

Lately, I have been getting bi-weekly hydrafacials which seem to help a lot. Because my skin was basically twisted, bunched, and wrapped, every time I even get a hydrafacial I notice a lot of movement. It has been about 1.5 years from the laser that damaged me. Emotionally, I still struggle, physically I still struggle. There are days where all the changes in my skin make it super red and inflamed and noticeable and other days when it almost looks ok.

Despite the fact that I still have a long way to go, I by no means fault Dr. Emer for this. He was the only one that even suggested that it could be "improved." It seems like my treatments are finally catching up.....I notice more changes now almost then ever before and I have a unique type of burn that as it unwinds I can actually see the skin changes (due to the rotation). The sides of my face seem to be filling in over time as the skin releases and I am starting to get the natural shape of my face back. The last treatment I even had with him was last October.....so I can assure you that healing TAKES THE LONGEST TIME EVER..... I don't think it's truly possible to see changes right away after one treatment....and after some of mine it almost looked worse for a period of time, and then started to improve. Your skin has to grow back....to fill in, to heal. Burning it off isn't going to make the improvement, the filling in aka damage repair will.

I am headed to Beverly Hills again on the 16th of June for another treatment. This time I will be getting a silk peel with Jennifer followed by a fraxel eye treatment, clear and brilliant and microneedling on my face. Every time I go I get freaked out.... The anxiety starts all over again. So far this time Dr. E's staff have been wonderful. They got Dr. Emer's opinion, I got a quote from Robert for the treatments- I had a set budget and they respected it and were flexible about my options and consulted Dr. E on the changes, I was able to iron out finances with Iris, Jessica set up my appointments, and Jennifer called me ON THE WEEKEND to go over pre and post laser skin care.

I generally wait a long time between my treatments to minimize risk and also to see results, sometimes even 6 months. It is hard to not go for it, but it's way harder to be damaged. Dr. Emer is wonderful and cares a lot. He also is building quite the reputation for himself and therefore the prices are going up...not Dr. Ourian going up, but definitely up there. My best advice is always get the quote prior to any procedure and therefore you won't be shocked. No one can afford treatment to fix a botched laser, I certainly can't. But I won't go to anyone else ever again. It's too risky.

In case you were curious my skin care is as follows:
1. am cleanse with restore sea cleanser
2. jan marini eye gel
3. 5 drops of Skinceuticals ferulic CE
4. reveskin moisturizer with silver something in it?
5. SUNSCREEN (either elta or skinceuticals)

PM
1. cleanse with cleanzyme by jan marini- let it sit on my skin for 2 mins and wash off
2. restoresea 24k gold oil
3. TNS serum

4x weekly- jan marini skinzyme mask for 20 mins and scrub off with skinceuticals microexfoliant
Red light therapy.

It is ridiculous- Also expensive. I have had to accumulate these items over time. Also, it is a lot for my skin even 1.5 years out. But it seems to be helping.

If you are reading this- my heart goes out to you. It sucks and is so not fair. Find a doctor that you trust....stick with that doctor. Communicate with that doctor, don't just write a bad review because one treatment didn't work for you. They are reaching out to try and help you. If you have any questions let me know.

Andrea

I have been following your emotionally intelligent reviews. I was hoping you could clarify what red light therapy you are using...? All the best to you!

Hey! I have been using a LED light that I bought on amazon a while back. It had the highest ratings and I just wanted to try it out. Recently when I was speaking with Jennifer from Dr. E's office she said that the only one that is FDA approved is one called Light Stim. I think I will buy that one when I go over there for my next appt and see if it's even more effective. I hope you're not in the same spot I am! xoxo
April 11, 2022
Hi - No LED lights are FDA "approved" they are all cleared. Lightstim is fine, but it's not the most powerful. Since you're a doc, you can get discounts for some of the professional ones. Celuma is a well-reviewed brand, but there are others. Hope by now you've had more improvement. You should also try anteage.com products. Since you're an MD you can order their MD line. This would be instead of TNS, as it also has stem cells.

I'm really heartened to hear of your progress... I was one of your initial commenters, so it's great that things have improved albeit slowly. Out if interest, did you ever file a case against the original company who did this to you? Apologies if you've answered that question before and I missed it... best wishes to you from London x
June 3, 2017
Hey lady! I actually filed a malpractice suit against the doctor that did this to me. It is very difficult to get another doctor to sign off on this, but thankfully this woman had messed up enough other people that the doctor was sick of seeing it. Yeah girl....progress is real. I'm still not like confident enough to post new pics but I will maybe after a few more treatments. Lawsuits take forever, and at this point I'm just looking for help paying for the damage and psychological damage. I've had a very tough recovery... both physical and mental. I believe sometimes seeking mental help is great...but I learned as a doctor that it can be detrimental to your career. Basically I had to defend my ability to practice to the board for no other reason than someone else hurt me. It sucked. But life is good, I'm getting back to normal day by day and becoming more myself. I hope if you've been hurt you've seen some progress or at least found some inner peace.

Best.
xoxo

OMG. Soooo many docs see shrinks and when their license/board renewals come up, they lie and answer "no." Sorry, but that's what you need to do. A friend I know was in a psychiatry residency where all were all in therapy (it was practically a requirement) and all lied on our license application, except one woman who was the best and brightest. She let them know she was bipolar (well controlled, mind you) and it nixed her career. It's like airline pilots who are afraid to say their getting psych treatment, so they don't. It's a ridiculous system.

How is your skin now?,have you had any success with the fat loss. I was also badly damaged by laser and it only continues to worsen.Chris.
April 11, 2022
My skin is actually pretty great now. It took about 5-6 years of being extremely diligent with skincare, and very natural/minimal with my treatments. I did A LOT of microneedling, a lot of PRP, a lot of clear and brilliant, botox, and now more recently microneedling with RF but not at a high setting. I use all ZO skin products, use a lot of sunscreen, drink a ton of water. It takes Forever to fix but I'm happy with me now.
