Roaccutane (Isotretonin) for acne

Hi
I am a 20 year old male who started on isotretonin capsules just over a month ago. I have suffered from acne for about 3 years and finally decided enough was enough, it has pretty much destroyed my confidence and even stopped me from going out because I feel ashamed and self conscious. I have only been on the tablets a month so I realise it's still quite early days but just wanted to see if my experience so far was similar to others going through it. So having read up on the side effects I knew what to expect and the biggest one is definitely the dry skin, which kind of makes sense as the drug works to strip away oils that contribute to acne formation. This is annoying but not too difficult to put up with, just use frequent moisturiser and lip balm to counter act the dryness. For the first week I also got a couple of headaches but these could easily have just been a coincidence and nothing to do with the treatment. As for the mood swings/depression to be honest for me it's no worse than it was anyway as a result of my acne, I'm sure a lot of people feel the same. Anyway, for the first couple of weeks my acne came out in full force worse than ever before, I've seen the term 'purged' used around forums and that's exactly what happened. After the initial 'purge' though and the next couple of weeks up until now it has started to gradually improve. However, recently I have noticed I seem to be getting a few small, red spots which are concentrated on my cheeks, almost like a rash. These are really annoying and almost as bad as the acne itself. It's really knocked my confidence back quite a bit especially as I was starting to see some signs of improvement. I realise there's still a long way to go and will probably have ups and downs throughout the course of treatment but just wanted to see if anyone else had been through something similar and could offer any advice on if it's working or just general advice? I literally want nothing more than to just feel comfortable in my own skin and this just feels like yet another setback. I have included photos of the 'purge' and also the small red spots I am referencing to now after a month of treatment. Thanks and appreciate the help.

Hey! Firstly well done for taking action about your acne, it took me so long of “it’ll just go away” to do so and I wish I had at the very start. I was on roaccutane for 6 months and, from my experience, it was the best thing I’ve ever done. Side effects wise, all yours are totally totally normal from what I’ve experienced/read. The dryness will probably get worse - just swap to a more heavy duty moisturiser if needed and never be without Vaseline for your lips and it’s totally controllable. The headaches are pretty common and can also be related to dehydration from the drug taking moisture out of your body, so drink plenty. The ‘purging’ is also normal and progress can be kind of slow after that - I was concentrating so hard on controlling the side effects (I had a lot of joint pain from an old injury) that one day I woke up and realised it was gone, and just cried for 20 minutes! Haha. Other stuff I experienced was the body pain as above (fine with painkillers), lethargy where I’d just collapse into bed and sleep for 12 hours once in a while, and super dry eyes (fixed with eye drops).
What I would say is that, from what I experienced, it was so worth it and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I could talk about it all day, so always happy to chat since it’s quite an all-consuming experience and I know everyone at my work wished they could put me on mute during it :) keep going, amazing skin lies on the other side!
Good luck on your journey to clear skin!
My son is on month 4. It was worse then better then worse and now better again. Try not to get too upset. Month 4 is supposed to be the crossing point where most people see dramatic improvement. It will be worth it in the end.
It totally works! Just persevere through the full treatment period. A lot of people have to do two rounds. Moisturizer is gonna be your new best friend! Good luck :)
