I wanted double eyelid surgery since I was a teenager, but kept contemplating whether to goto Asia to do it (language barrier) or stay in Canada (hard to find any doctors here who have the experience). I ended up going to Dr. Brown in Richmond after a few doctors turned me away due to my multiple crease problem.. They said they could not do it due to the risk of a "re-lapse"(see pictures) -- My eyes would "change" folds daily going from monolid, to midway to double eyelid so it was SUPER frustrating to find someone with a similar experience to compare to for this surgery. I did TONS of research going into this as you should with any type of surgery.. these are your eyes!

Consult was great, Tania (his nurse) was very reassuring and answered all my questions following up to the appointment. Meeting Dr. Brown was a breeze, he was realistic and explained what he could and could not accomplish -- showed me various befores/afters with patients he had done the procedure on and I felt very confident with him. I never felt pressured or rushed, or that he was "fake" like some plastic surgeons can seem. We decided on doing the medial epicanthoplasty (which is where he would cut out the inner corner to make the double eyelid fold more prominent) and the incisional double eyelid procedure. For the surgery itself it was just under $4800cdn = pricey but that was fairly average I found with Canadian doctors -- I know Asia/US is cheaper but including travel expenses it would've been around the same and I didn't want to deal with language/foreign barriers.

Day of Surgery: Dr. Brown does his surgeries at Cambie Surgery Center (private hospital). Very spacious and clean facility. I was greeted by Dr. Brown and Tania (his nurse) before the surgery and went over everything (i.e crease height, what to expect etc). He said a 5mm height would be most natural for me. I was nervous like anyone would be in surgery, but Tania talked me through everything -- from sitting on the operating table to the pain injections etc.. Honestly, the worst part was getting the IV needle through my hand (hurt the most). I was half awake with local anesthesia (?) -- I could hear Dr. Browns instructions to open and close my eyes during the procedure but I felt absolutely no pain during the incision/stitching up (just minor rugs and pulls).

After surgery: They put a lubricant in my eye that blurred a lot of my vision after the surgery (supposed to keep your eyes moist). Tania and other nurses had to wheel me out in a wheelchair and instructed me to keep cool compresses on my eyes. They didn't discharge me for another hour after the surgery.

Day 1-7 Post-Op: I had to keep stitches in for a week -- the inner corner stitches were dissolvable, but the eyelid ones were the most itchy. I was told to ice for the first 2-3 days and then switch to a warm compress (stimulates blood flow to reduce bruising) afterwards. I don't think I bruised as badly as I've seen others but my skin tone was a bit yellow. I didn't feel much pain after the medication wore off.. but it was more a sore/tightness if that makes sense. It really did not hurt as badly as it looks haha (see pictures). I was allowed to put Polysporin on the incision line and inner corner area.

Day 7 Post-Op: Stitches out! As most of others said this is probably the more painful part as they're tugging out your sutures.. I still thought the IV insertion was the worst part from surgery -- my hand was still bruised from that prick!!). Tania who removed my stitches was really fast. Only a slight tug in some areas. She said I was healing very well compared to other patients (not much bruising, and swelling went down quickly). Tania also told me to STOP putting Polysporin on at this point. The incision was closed so doing so would only prolong the redness so no more creams/ointments at this point.

Two-weeks post-op: Creases still very swollen, redness is mostly gone, bumps flattening out from stitches finally. Wearing glasses hides most of it (not noticeable)

1-month post op: Crease is still high, one side dropping faster than the other. Still wearing glasses at this point

3-month post op: One side is still slightly higher than the other, but it's expected to continue to drop over the next few months to a year.. will keep updating when I hit the 6 month mark! Overall very happy with how it's healing
