Just a quick before and after photo!

Not the best quality images (believe me, there are virtually no photos of me in existence) but the difference is astoundingly clear! The contrast really makes apparent just how asymmetrical my nose was before, too.

A Smooth Experience and an Incredible Outcome!

I’ve begun writing this review in the midst of my recovery: that’s just how confident I am in Mark, and how satisfied I am with the surgical outcome already. I had a functional redo rhinoplasty with a rib graft.
I’ve had lifelong sinus problems, significant asymmetry in various aspects of my nose, and a litany of surgeries to remedy it all. I developed nasal valve collapse after the first septoplasty, too. I’ve spent two decades avoiding the camera, and having photos taken for passports or ID purposes was an unpleasant process—upon seeing the outcome, I’d always end up hyper-focusing on my nose. I also had double jaw surgery which seemed to make matters worse (it didn’t help that one of the surgeons remarked that they couldn’t work out where the midline of my upper jaw was in relation to my nose because it was that crooked!). Above all, I was still a bit congested, and relying on nasal sprays to breathe through my nose at night: not really what I wanted after so much surgical intervention!
After recovering from jaw surgery, I decided enough was enough. I made a list of surgeons all over Melbourne who I wanted to discuss the issue with, and sorted that list alphabetically. I’m now so glad I didn’t sort that list in some other arbitrary fashion—I made an appointment to see Mark first, and I never ended up working my way down that list. He is genuine, has a great sense of humour, realistic, and above all, is ridiculously knowledgeable, brilliantly skilled, and possesses a fantastic aesthetic sense. At no point in the process did I feel hesitant, anxious, or unsure. He truly took the time to talk through all aspects of the surgery with me. A true gem!
I wasn’t nervous at all leading up to the operation, and remember waking up from it feeling so content and optimistic—a testament to the anaesthetist’s skill, too! My recovery was a dream, with the only downsides being the removal of packing (which was over and done with quite quickly, but still, not a pleasant sensation!) and having to sleep upright (I highly recommend getting a wedge pillow!). The location of my rib graft hurt, but this improved rapidly. My eyelids were quite bruised and swollen for about four days afterwards, which was manageable with the eye mask provided.* I had the weirdest dreams (a recurring theme was my car being stolen—seriously so stressful!) and I woke constantly throughout the night, which left me exhausted during the day. Breathing through my mouth 24/7 for two weeks also left my mouth and lips very, very dry: you’ll need a lot of lip balm while recovering, and even then, it doesn’t feel like it helps much! I also had a crust/scab situation just inside both nostrils which smelled so, so bad. It’s all part of the journey but still, not particularly pleasant. What helped the most was having a stack of reading material, some indulgent (and soft) meals planned, and most of all, a positive mindset! Recovery is much less arduous when you know you can and will get through it, and the days will just fly by. Whenever I had questions, Mark was so quick to respond to my emails, which really put me at ease.
*As an aside, I’m a very design-oriented person, so I always appreciate good branding: accordingly, everything from the embroidery on Mark’s surgical scrubs to the little ‘gift bag’ and information pamphlets, the eye mask, and even the interior design of the clinic, all together made for a powerful and coherent brand identity.
So, fast-forward to the day of splint removal (a.k.a today!): the lovely nurse cleaned up all the crusty stuff inside my nose and then took off the splint. It’s hard to even put my reaction into words: I felt a mixture of extreme joy mixed with disbelief. Was this veritable work of art really my nose now?! After so many years of being uncomfortable with what I saw in the mirror, and feeling as if an aesthetically-appealing nose was some unattainable quality, I couldn’t believe it was finally real. Thank you, Mark—your work is beyond incredible! I am so immensely grateful for everything you have done. I had conceptualised my nose as something almost too difficult to fix, and you truly went above and beyond in every respect.
Merely two weeks and three days in, this isn’t the end—I know I still have a lot of healing ahead of me—but honestly, this was such a smooth and easy experience. I wish I did this years ago! I am truly overjoyed with how well everything has gone. Life-changing would be an understatement, and I cannot thank Mark enough, you are a true legend! There are no words for how appreciative I am.
