Excited for Surgery, Left in Tears..

I am deeply hurt and disappointed by my recent consultation with Dr. Toledo. I previously had a minor surgery with him back in June that went very well, so I was excited to come back for a rhinoplasty consultation. Sadly, this experience left me in tears and I’ve never looked at myself this way the way I’ve been insulted by someone I trusted so much.

At first, he was direct, which I appreciated because not a lot of doctors are..I’ll give him that. But once we got to the imaging, things went downhill. He spent about 10 secs creating one potential outcome on the computer and expected me to accept it without further discussion. When I asked questions and requested a few tweaks so I could see every angle, he became dismissive. The entire “consult” was 5 mins including the time I walked in the door and he came in the room, to me sitting down for imaging.

Dr. Toledo left the room, then came back sighing and told his nurse he “can’t perform on me” because I “have body dysmorphia.” He then said he “can’t fix my brain” and grabbed a mirror saying I’d be “nitpicking every angle of my nose”. This was all because I wanted a consultation longer than a few mins to make sure I understood the results before investing my hard-earned money for something I’ve wanted for my birthday/grad/Christmas gift to myself. He said “he doesn’t perform on people like that” implying there’s something wrong with me. I was so shocked and hurt.

I took off work early for this appointment and was genuinely excited, but instead I was insulted and left in tears. I never expected this from anyone especially a doctor I trusted. No patient deserves to be treated this way. I will also be reporting this experience to the medical board.

Response from Dr. Toledo:
We hold our procedures to the highest standards and patient satisfaction is always a priority to us. We strive to act in the best interest of our patients. Sometimes that means we decline to perform a requested surgery. It is especially important we do not perform surgery on patients who admit they have Body Dysmorphic Disorder. In general, one of the hallmarks of this disorder is an obsession with a perceived or minimal flaw, so making permanent changes almost always means the patient is unhappy with their results. During your visit we spent almost an hour discussing your case. Computer imaging is a great tool for showing patients a realistic expectation of the surgical changes. If patients do not have realistic expectations, as is the case with BDD, we will decline to take them as a rhinoplasty patient.
