Need Advice- Primary w/ Dr. G

Hello everyone! I’m scheduled for a primary rhino with Dr. G for December 2018. I am both nervous and excited. I have so many questions and don’t know what to expect and would appreciate any tips you guys have. I have two young kids at home and I’m wondering when I will be healed enough to take care of them full time? Will I be okay after a week? How long will my nose be overly upturned? And when should I start taking Arnica? Thanks in advance :-)

I had my surgery with Dr. G 3 months ago. I had a very easy recovery. I was able to do just about everything even the day of surgery with 0 pain. I felt good but I definitely did not look good so I didn’t feel comfortable going out in public.

Thanks for sharing! Hopefully I’m the same way. When did you feel like you looked normal?

I am on day 3 in a lot of pain and feeling dizzy. I have kids and have help caring for them right now since I am down. Better to plan for sitters and if you feel well you can cancel your help. I think I am pretty tough but my pain is heavy and I am not sleeping.

Good idea. I don’t have a sitter I use regularly so I’m having a hard time finding someone. I hope you feel better soon and are able to get some rest! Thx!

I looked “normal” after 2 weeks as my bruises were completely gone by then

That’s awesome! Two weeks isn’t bad at all. Thanks!

I just had mine last Thursday and I have a CRAZY active 3 year old boy. Pain for me wasn’t bad at all, I had more of an issue with breathing thru my mouth and my nose tip and between eyes are a bit tender. I did plan on having my cousin help me with my toddler until cast removal only because I was scared he’d jump on me and mess my nose up. Now that my cousin is gone, I leave the tape on my nose during the day just so my kids remember to be a little more cautious around me!! I started taking Arnica 4x a day, 2 days prior to surgery and everyday after that with a lot of icing and i believe it helped with the bruising, swelling, and possibly helped with the pain because it’s not as bad as I was expecting. Good luck, Dr. G is awesome!

Thank you so much for the info! I’ll take my arnica the way you did. I feel like I have no idea what my face will look like but I guess I just have to trust him. My toddler is crazy too. Haha

Will you be posting your before pic? Keep us updated!! Yay, I’m so excited for you! What changes are you wanting to make to your nose?

I am day 6 and feel so much better. No pain only barely tender. I don’t know if you were asking if you’d feel good in a week to go back to work? I work, have kids and am in school. Truthfully I am not ready to start all that tomorrow. Ha! Arnica. I have been taking everyday since surgery. I had little swelling and bruising. I also recommend pineapple juice. Make sure you get biotene for your mouth dryness and a water bottle that squeezes out was most helpful for me through the night when you wake up with severe dry mouth. There are some great reviews on here recommending foods to have ready and other supplies. Make sure you have someone taking care of you the 1st 2-3 days. You need to ice your face rest. Everyone is so different. I think I am tough but this kicked my butt. We are all here for you!

Thank you for the info! I hadn’t heard about getting a water bottle that squeezes but that’s a great idea.

Update- Rhino w Dr. G

MissRosey
I had surgery last Friday and it went well! Dr. G met with me quickly before surgery to go over what he was going to do. Honestly, I was not a fan of the pre-op nurses. They were not comforting at all and gave me no information. When I was getting the IV I made a comment that I hated IVs and the nurse was so rude about it and acted liked she’d never heard of anyone not liking an IV. Keep in mind I was totally nice and I’m a very easy patient. The post-op nurses were great! one of them in particular was fantastic. I didn’t see Dr. G after surgery but his office calls to check in. Overall recovery has been easier then I expected and I only used pain pills the first two days. I’m taking Arnica and drinking pineapple juice. I do feel dizzy sometimes and the congestion is awful but I’m not in pain which is good. My bruising is pretty bad but getting better and the swelling in my eyes is gone except for about 20%. Not bad for day 4. I do have one concern that I’m freaked out about. I have a weird sensation in my foot. It feels like there is a pad of water on the top of my foot and it’s slightly numb. I don’t know how else to describe it. I called Dr. G’s Office and they said it’s not related to surgery but I noticed it they say after so that seems awfully coincidental. I can’t really see my results with the cast and swelling but hopefully it’s all worth it!

Glad to hear the surgery went well! Mine is in 2 days and I'm so nervous!!!

it’s totally normal to be nervous. in fact, it’d be weird if you weren’t! I hated my nose when I first saw it but I love the profile already and it’s growing on me. I’m just so swollen it’s hard to tell what it’s going to look like. he’s the best though so I’m sure it will look good! good luck!

How is your foot? I'm an anesthesiologist. Sounds like there may have been some nerve damage from positioning during surgery. Maybe your foot was an awkward position or they accidentally left something resting on your foot. Most of the time this damage is temporary but can take up to a year to heal.

Thank you so much for your response! I had my notifications off so I am just is seeing it. I am 7 months post op and my foot is fine. It took a while to feel normal again but now it is 100% fine. I was disappointed Dr.G and his office blew off my concerns so I appreciate your response.

3 weeks post op

MissRosey
I had my primary rhinoplasty three weeks ago and the recovery wasn’t bad at all. I had residual bruising for two weeks and my whole face was swollen for about a week. I didn’t need pain pills after the second day. My nose gets a little better every day and I’m happy about that but I still can’t breathe well out of my nose. Has anyone else had trouble breathing out of their nose at three weeks? When could you breathe well out of your nose?

I’m 3 months post op and my breathing just started to improve.

Thank you for your response. I didn’t expect my breathing to be effected this long.
