Unprofessional and Dismissive Consultation Experience

I went in for a consultation regarding revision rhinoplasty and breast implant replacement. I expected an honest discussion about surgical options and safety, but instead left feeling judged and humiliated.

Very early in the consultation, the surgeon stated that we needed to address the “elephant in the room,” referring to my weight. He repeatedly told me that I was “the definition of anorexic,” despite my explaining that I have always been naturally thin. He also made personal assumptions about my mental state and said that the deeper issue was that I was unhappy with myself.

I completely understand that a plastic surgeon has the right to decline elective surgery for medical reasons or concerns about patient safety. That was not the issue for me. The issue was the bedside manner, the repeated labeling, and the dismissive behavior during the consultation. At one point he rolled his eyes while I was trying to explain myself.

Patients seeking cosmetic or reconstructive procedures are often already in a vulnerable position. Regardless of whether a surgeon decides to move forward with treatment, patients deserve to be spoken to with professionalism, respect, and compassion.
