Update 4.5 years post

I saw Dr. Wayne this week. We looked at my nose and took some photos (photos are taken each time I go back.) My nose won’t ever be perfect as I’ve had 3 surgeries, but we agreed that my nose is a huge improvement still over what mess I started with in 2018 when I decided on him after interviewing 4 surgeons from all over.
My nose doesn’t look operated on at all, and the “flaws” I don’t think anyone would ever notice except him or I looking closely. The ENT I saw locally (both) said that Dr. Wayne did an excellent job and you would never know I had multiple surgeries. It took him 4.5 hours to fix my nose and my forehead scar (which looked crazy after surgery, I was worried, but you would never know it’s there in my hairline unless you really knew to look!)

My Peck graft is slightly more sharp on one side, and we talked about shaving it slightly under local, but we will wait and see. I would prefer to leave it for now and see in the next 2-3 years how it looks. I know if I need it shaved I can come back and see him and there is no rush.

That said, I came to see him after I blew my nose very hard (it blocked on that side instantly) and after that had some blocking (from I think turbinites and inflammation) on and off and irritation/burning on that side the next day… 6 wks ago.

My nose was dry to start and he thinks I caused some inflammation, but structurally my nose looks fine. So I told him a humidifier is helping, turbinites are better but I still get dry and inflamed and some burning/irrigation in that nostril I blew out of. He said my CT scan I brought looks good and my nose looks wide open, but it’s very dry. So I need to use Aquaphor and hydrate it as much as possible. I have noticed drinking water, humidifier and saline gel have helped. Since my septum is fine and turbinites look ok, he encouraged me to leave them alone and try to hydrate the nose and let the inflammation heal (I never had a septoplasty or turbinites touched and I’m hoping to avoid that in the future!)

We talked about revisions, and I know he takes to heart when someone isn’t fully happy, but he does his best to stick with them and help them. The most important thing is with a revision to understand, we will never have a perfect nose. It can be improved, but it’s always a risk to do more and more surgeries and that can cause other issues. The nose is bone, tissue and cartilage and we can’t always control how it heals. It’s important to have follow ups, talk to your surgeon and go back if needed. I know it’s time and money, but follow ups matter. This was I think my third trip back to see him. He always answers emails and calls, but he really needs to see and feel the nose in person and look inside.

So that is my 4.5 year follow up. I hugged Dr. Wayne and teared up saying goodbye and thank you for allowing me to move past that horrible year of my life and move on and LIVE MY LIFE after being so upset and depressed at the mess my nose was. I hope to not go back unless it’s to visit, but I know if I need a touch up he is there. OKC will always be a special place in my heart!

Heading to OKC in a few weeks :)

Heading to OKC to see Dr. Wayne mid Feb. I already had the appt, but I had been sick and blew my nose really hard and blocked my nostril that same instant and it’s been a problem since. I had one day of burning and irritation and now it just won’t settle. You take for granted being able to breathe well until you can’t! :(

Now 3 wks later I have a inferior turbinite hypertrophy that’s blocking that nostril according to a local ENT after blowing my nose. I’m starting Flonase and staying on saline, but I’m having Dr. Wayne take a look if it’s not gone by then to see if he can fix it. I’ve had zero breathing problems after my surgery, and who would have thought blowing my nose this hard out of nowhere would cause all this so many years later. I’m hopeful he can help me if it isn’t gone and take a look at my nose as well and feel and see it in person. I just don’t trust anyone else locally to do it like I trust him so fingers crossed.

4 years post revision Dr. Ivan Wayne :)

Hi everyone, I’m rarely on here anymore, but I wanted to give an update because I know when I was looking for a surgeon I almost never saw reviews past 6-12 months.

I’m just over 4 years post revision with Dr. Wayne. Overall, I’m very happy with my improvement. See my previous review and pics for what a mess my nose was when I went to him and how he repaired it with several grafts etc. and fixed my horrible columella among other issues.

It’s very hard with the emotional trauma to pick a surgeon in a depressed state and after interviewing several, I went with my gut. My surgery was 4.5 hours as he also repaired a hairline scar and now no one would never know I had a large incision in my hairline, it went from pink to white and very very fine.

Even years later, he zoomed with me and we talked about how revisions especially with never be perfect and any areas of concern for me. We also talked about how the nose can change and shift over time.

I do have 2 very small calluses/bone on my bridge and right next to it on my left side that I can feel but are not very visible except in certain lighting and my bridge profile looks straight still. They have been there since 6 months post op. Dr. Wayne did say he would need to see them in person to assess them as well as a sharper area of my tip that I have a graft in that may need more ear that had possibly absorbed but again, I have very thin skin that shows everything which is hard in a revision especially with how many grafts I have.

I think it speaks to Dr. Wayne’s integrity and understanding to help patients years later and be willing to still make his work as perfect as he possibly can to try to make his patients happy.

I hope this helps someone out there looking for a surgeon to help them :)
