Very Disappointing Experience - Persistent Functional & Cosmetic Issues

I underwent a revision rhinoplasty with Dr. Shuaib in April, 2024, and unfortunately, I am extremely dissatisfied with the results and overall experience. While there are many positive reviews online, I would strongly encourage anyone considering this surgeon to do thorough research beyond these reviews, including looking into discussions on WhatsApp and Facebook groups, where many others have shared similar concerns.??I came to Dr. Shuaib with both functional and cosmetic issues, primarily to address a breathing problem (valve collapse and deviated septum from a previous surgery), as well as to fix aesthetic concerns including a poly beak, inverted V deformity, and dent in the bridge. Dr. Shuaib initially assessed my case as 4/10 in difficulty and expressed confidence in his ability to resolve my issues, so I genuinely liked and trusted him with my care. However, the reality has been far from what was promised.??Since the surgery, I have sought second opinions from 2 ENTs and another revision surgeon, all of whom confirmed that I have the following issues post surgery:
* Persistent valve collapse
* Deviated septum
* Turbinate hypertrophy, which causes ongoing nasal blockage
* Poly beak
* Flattened columella
* Bridge irregularities
* A protruding tip graft
* Asymmetry in my nostrils and left nostril retraction?
In addition to not improving my original concerns, new issues were created. One of the most surprising aspects was Dr. Shuaib's decision to alter my upper bridge and radix, which he said “technically isn’t a radix graft but something like that”, which was not part of the agreed-upon plan. His reasoning was that part of my nasal bone was missing as a result of primary - yeah, I had a bump removed previously. So it looks like Dr. Shuaib decided to bring it back for some reason, and did it unevenly so I now have bumps between eyes, and a prominent bump on lateral and 3/4 views. So, if you are looking to restore your bump, I can attest, he can do that - but that was not part of the plan for my case. Dr. Shuaib also raised my tip and columella contrary to our discussion, resulting in a flatter nose that was never discussed or agreed upon. These issues very evident at cast-off and weren’t the result of healing, except for poly beak, that formed within a few months. Despite meeting with him 3 times prior to surgery and providing clear references for what I wanted and didn’t want, the final result was inconsistent with our initial plan. My primary goal was always to improve my breathing, and I was disappointed to find that my functional issues were not only unresolved but also worsened. Dr Shuaib ended up using both rib and septal grafts even though his initial plan was to use septum as it hasn’t been utilized during my primary. My post op notes state he used rib for left LCSG graft and septum for the right one, which another revision surgeon I since consulted said was not a good approach, as those grafts have to be as identical as possible in size, shape, thickness and firmness. I now experience a persistent collapse on the right side, where septal cartilage was used. Additionally the right LCSG graft is popping and clicking with every nose movement, making me extremely aware of its presence, which is sometimes painful and extremely uncomfortable.
In addition, my post-op care was lacking. When I raised concerns about my breathing, I was dismissed, and it wasn’t until months later that I was finally advised to use nasal retainers, which I was told by another revision surgeon, should have been used right after the cast was off and was too late (and definitely shouldn’t be bought on Amazon). My nasal valve collapse and nostril retraction and asymmetry could have been prevented if Dr. Shuaib instructed me to wear retainers right after the surgery, not after months.??Furthermore, communication after surgery was problematic. Abel, who was always available pre-surgery, became unresponsive to most of my post-surgery inquiries. I never received another refill for antibiotic for cipro soaks as he promised, and my questions and concerns about how to care for the rib wound (info wasn’t in the papers) weren’t addressed. Dr. Shuaib doesn’t use surgical glue and a sheet to keep the ends of the wound together until they heal. Instead, he applies dissolvable sutures, and mine looked infected, - I was diligently sending multiple photos to Abel asking if there’s anything wrong and what I should do, but he kept saying everything was fine. I now have unsightly wide scar that needs revision.??Dr. Shuaib didn’t validate any of my concerns and was dismissive. On top of that, I struggled to get my surgical notes from Dr. Shuaib’s office despite multiple requests, and my six-month follow-up appointment was never scheduled. I ended up being ghosted and abandoned as a patient by no longer receiving responses to my emails.?

One of the most concerning aspects of my experience, besides not following the surgery plan, was Dr. Shuaib’s first statement after surgery. He told me that my case turned out to be far more complex than initially thought and that I should not expect great results, even though he had rated my case as 4/10 difficulty prior to surgery. Based on what he said, I feel that he may have underestimated the complexity of my case, which led to an unsatisfactory outcome. While I understand that revision rhinoplasty is challenging, a more experienced surgeon who is prepared for such complexities may have been better suited for my case, a surgeon who has been continuously exposed to different scenarios in his career, has a good number of consistent good long-term results, so he knows exactly what to do if things don’t go as anticipated on the table and post op instead of showing lack of accountability, being careless in post op care, dismissing valid concerns, and then ghosting and abandoning you.
In conclusion, I cannot recommend Dr. Shuaib, especially for complex revision cases. I am scheduled for a second revision with another surgeon next year, as my breathing and cosmetic concerns remain unresolved. I hope this review helps others make an informed decision about their choices.
