Radiesse Filler Triggered Outbreak

I am a late 30’s healthy female. I had radiesse fillers injected on my cheek bones for the first time, everything seemed pretty standard as far as healing minor swelling and slight bruising but nothing major. I only used one syringe as we wanted to start slow. I felt one side was alittle more prominent, slightly bumpy (not noticeable to anyone but I noticed) and felt I could use a little more to even it out with more of a smooth finish. I returned two weeks later, Dr added another syringe to finish the results. After the results looked great. Shortly after I started having numbness down the side of my right nose, gum and lip. The right side of my lip was not lifting when I smiled. Right side cheek and under my eye swallowed up pretty good by the end of the night. The office reassured me numbness was from the lidocaine that is mixed in with filler and swallowing was normal and would subside in a day or two. I went to my general physician the next day he felt it may be pressure from swallowing pressing on nerves.. he assured me I didn’t have a stroke and to give it another day and hopefully the numbness will come back... two days later my cheek started getting red and slowly breaking out with small white head looking blisters. Next morning rash has spread and gotten worse. I went to urgent care immediately, physician thought I may have a shingles outbreak or a staph infection. He put me on viral medicine to stop the spreading If it shingles antibiotics if it was a infection and topical cream. In two days after starting meds I felt it looked worse but it localized wasn’t spreading. The rash was on the right side under my eye, side of my nose and a small spot above my right lip. I also went to a dermatologist who said, he did not think it was shingles and a bacteria infection and took swabs to determine what kind . I went back to my injector the same day who also said it was shingles. The rash was red, elevated, painful, blisters, which started pussing and drying out. After 4 day of flare, I noticed it was getting better ,drying out, blisters had popped, much more flat but still very noticeable. This was a adverse side effect from the injection. It’s been by far one of the scariest experiences of my life. I wanted to share because I wasn’t able to find much about anything like this on the internet. I’m still in the heeling phase, seven days from injections and I still have numbness and rash is still very visible but getting better.
Radiesse also is a filler that can not be removed or dissolved and take some 18-24 months to go away just wanted to mention that as well.

This is the most aggressive reaction this is 5 weeks in . It been blistering up with drainage but still red.. it seems like drainage needed to come out to heel. I don’t feel like this was shingles and a infection that needed to drain. I can’t wait for this to go away. I’m hoping another 2 weeks.

Hi K ... I'm hoping all has resolved by now. Your rash is quite indicative of a vascular occlusion. Radiesse is thick. If your injector unknowingly injected the product into a vessel, this is the exact response of dying tissue. People always associate this rash as shingles. If there was aching, pain, redness and tenderness right after the filler, then I would suspect vascular occlusion. If your discomfort came days to weeks later ( after the rash) suspect shingels / HSV 1or 2. There ARE treatments for Radiesse!! Those of you - injectors who don't know this reversal technique - should NOT be injecting this product ... Carboxytherapy could help you leaps and bounds over the rest BTW.
Good luck ...

Yes I agree definitely not shingles just injectors covering up their mistakes.. 12 weeks and I still have visible signs of something big and red on my face..

Sometimes- if there's blood flow which sounds like there is. Please have another opinion with a Derm who does Radiesse.

The injector ruled out vascular occlusion since it was red which meant there was blood flow.. I’m 10 weeks in and the numbness in my lip has subsided thank god. Also the worse is over no more puss filled blisters.. slight redness which decreased in size and still slightly red but hopefully that will all fade and this will be a long lost memory..

Actually puss fillled blisters would return every 3-4 days.. whatever in their wants out!

Seems like an allergic reaction to the filler - did they try oral steroids?? Not sure what you can do if it is an allergy, since Radiesse lasts so long....

or removed so make sure you find a experienced injector because when this stuff goes in it doesn’t come out. 18-24 months it will last. I’m waiting for my face to heel so I can enjoy my results.. but to say the least it’s been a stressful experience. I can’t say as of right now if I’d do it again. I’m disappointed as I’m for enhancement but this has discouraged me for any future work. But I’m licking my wounds right now so we shall see.
