Port Wine Stain Treatment

Port Wine Stain Treatment

I have a GIANT birthmark on my face. My birthmark is a port wine stain. It's a malformation of blood vessels that causes the redness. Unlike other birthmarks, my type has nothing to do with skin color. It's not just a blemish. My type of birthmark gets progressively worse over time. It thickens the skin, causes my skin to look like an orange peel, and gets darker as I age. It can cause glaucoma, problems breathing, and can cause me to bite the inside of my lip.

Today, after a 13 year break, I had a laser treatment to help stop the progression and hopefully lessen some of the thickness and darkening that has occurred over the last 13 years.

Dr. Gross and his staff are amazing. I had been treated by Dr. Gross 13 years ago and had a series of about 8 treatments. In the 13 years since, their office has only gotten better. The BLT numbing cream significantly limited the amount of pain I felt during treatment, and Shalyn was the MOST AMAZING assistant during the procedure. She made sure I can comfortable and helped reduce any stress during the procedure. Dr. Gross takes time with his patients and listens to concerns and desired outcomes.

This is the first in a series of treatments, so do not expect a perfect outcome from one session. That's not possible with this type of birthmark, but I am very happy with the results and look forward to continuing treatment.

Hi,

Firstly, congratulations on taking up further PDL treatment. A big decision for you but I know it's the right one.

I'm sure I should be saying be happy with yourself but if there is a facility out there that can help you feel better about yourself then grab it with both hands.

Some people with a PWS are easily able to brush it off and not allow it to overcome them. I really do hope you're the former.

I too have a PWS. It's on either side of my face, scalp, neck and all over the left side of my chest and all down my left arm.

As it happens I've just returned from my local hospital today (I live in England) and I've had the whole of my left arm lasered. And it's sore.

I imagine I'm doing what most do after they've had laser treatment - they surf the net looking at different types of treatment and research other patients with similar conditions.

I've been receiving laser treatment for almost 18 years now. I'll try and be positive; my face has lightened, along with my chest area and upper left arm but my hairline has receded so I have to shave my head, which means the PWS on my scalp is exposed.

Losing my hairline, combined with now exposing the new PWS on my scalp has hit me hard and I have struggled of late. I won't go into my tales of woe with you as I don't want to show how sad I am.

I hope you're in a better place than I, and I sincerely wish you all the best with your continued treatment.

I wish for you what I wish for myself, have pride in your treatment, recognise the results and don't ever let your PWS hold you back.

May I make a final suggestion?

If you are getting the small, clotted blood spots on your PWS, try and find a facility that uses the ND:YAG laser 1032nm.

The laser flattens out this 'cobbling' very well.

I wish you health and happiness.

Kindest regards.

Hi I live in the United States; I just got my first treatment but I didn’t get any bruising at all. Does this means this treatment is not going to do anything? My doctor used pulsed dye laser on part of my birth mark.

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your experience here. My newborn son also has port wine stain, it covers half of his face. It hurts my heart as a mother whenever I saw his face. We just took him to see a specialist at children’s hospital and they suggested to do pulsed dye laser treatment. I wonder how is your result now, looks like your last post was from a while back. Would you please tell me your progress and result now? I would be really appreciate it. Thank you for your time.
