Due to a detached retina 14 years ago, my left eyeball changed shape causing lower lid dropping. Previous u/l blep w/direct brow lift 12 years ago which was performed by Dr Lopta Gupta with great success. Over the past several years my left lower lid has gotten droopier. I went for a consultation with Dr Flora Levin an ocular plastic surgeon. Completely unimpressed I turned to RealSelf and read reviews. I came across several very positive reviews for Dr Johnny Mao and decided to book a consultation. He took his time and explained all options in detail. I as impressed with his calm demeanor and knowledge. The office staff is friendly, accommodating and professional. I decided on having an U/L bleph w/canthopexy and fractional laser resurfacing of my face. Surgery was on 9/27 as an office procedure with oral sedation (Ativan Vicodin) and local injections. Surgery took approximately 3 hours. I had no pain during the surgery. Swelling and some bruising the next few days. My face bronzed and peeled quickly...I was completely peeled in 4 days. Aquaphor worked great and I love Cetaphyl moisturizer! Sutures were removed 5 days post op. I was give paper tape to use on my left eye as it continues to droop. Massage and exercise as well. I am now 11 days post op and left lower lid drooping seems a bit worse. My skin looks amazing!

Hang in there, the droop will improve as the eyelid muscle will regain tone. It is already looking better than the day when sutures were removed. Keep taping and continue with the massage and exercises. See you at your next appointment. Please be patient as you are less than 2 weeks postop.

Thank you for your reply. This is why I gave such a great review. You have the patient’s best interest first. Tape cause rash and minor blistering.

You say you gave a great review but you only gave 2 stars?

You look great! I promise it will get so much better in 3 months and even BETTER in 6.

I am so sorry you went through this I have a similar problem. How are you doing today?

I am confused here what actually happened because I have the same problem and was going to see this doctor. Please advise.

Was the lid retraction resolved?
August 20, 2020
No it hasn’t. I will need at least 2 more surgeries to try and correct the damage caused by Dr Mao. If you are going to have eye surgery I strongly suggest having it done by an ocular plastic surgeon.

I’m so sorry you were put through this and then when you go to him for help he gives you a nonsensical answer. He should pay for your revision and refund everything that you paid him

Still concerned about my left lower lid drooping as well as a split in the outer corner. How long does one wait to see if tape and massage is enough?

Individual differences but in general taping for 2-4 weeks but for revision cases maybe longer. If you are getting irritation from the tape then stop and increase the frequency of your massage and blinking exercises. Let me see it whenever you get a chance to stop by the office.

My left lower lid continues to drop and turn outward. To me it looks worse. Still massaging and exercises.

Because of the scleral buckle and altered conjunctiva from previous surgeries, the fluid clearance will be slower causing the conjunctica to swell and the lid to turn out more. I need to see you back in office but unfortunately you rescheduled your last appointment.
