I have always been self conscious about my smile. ...

I have always been self conscious about my smile. I had crowding, and overbite (top teeth cover too much of lower teeth), and an overjet (space between upper teeth and lower teeth.

When I went for my initial consultation with my orthodontist, I was given four options; two options with traditional braces, and two with invisialgin. I was given the option of just straightening my teeth or correct all three problems. The simple correction of crowding and cooked teeth would only take seven to eight months with either option, but I would still have and overbite and an overjet. I chose the option to fix all of my orthodontic problems with invisalign because with traditional braces, I would have to have two teeth pulled and have head gear. The cost of invisalign and traditional braces were the same. Simple straightening was cheaper.

Cons and advice:
The worst part about invisalign is the mold taking. It only takes a minute or so, but it is uncomfortable. I also have six buttons. Buttons are tooth colored attachments placed on your teeth to hold the trays in place and help in tooth movement. I have six, four uppers and two lowers. Initially, I only had five three on top. I had problems with the top side with only one button popping off of my teeth as they would get loose every time I opened my mouth. That was super annoying. I talked to my orthodontist about it and had new impressions taken and a sixth button added. Now, I have no trouble with part of my braces popping off and on of my teeth when I open and close my mouth.

Mild pain, more like pressure on days one and two of new aligners. My pain did not seem near as bad as the pain experienced by my friends after they would have their traditional braces adjusted.

The buttons can come off. This is only a mild annoyance, depending on which one/ones come off. Most of the time, you can continue wearing the invisalign without getting a new button until your next appointment. That was the case for me anyway.

You do have to brush and floss your teeth after you eat. Yes, every time. Do not put your braces back in your mouth unless you do. Doing this will keep them clean, and your mouth feeling fresh and healthy. They do get gross like people say if you put them back in your mouth with food on and between your teeth. If you don’t think you can handle brushing your teeth this much or maintaining this level of oral hygiene, do not get invisalign.

Some aligners have sharp places on them. The aligners can be filed to remove the sharp place. Not really a big deal. I’ve gone though 18 sets of aligners so far and only had two that had sharp places. After removing the sharp places, they were comfortable again.

Pros:
They really are quite invisible. You have to be very close to someone and they really have to be paying attention to your teeth to have them notice. My boyfriend can’t tell the difference when I kiss him with them in versus when I kiss him with them out.

The pain is very mild.

I could see my teeth moving within the first week. It was very exciting. I got to keep all of my teeth, no pulling to make room for them.

They double as whiting trays.

I’ve been very pleased with my experience so far. I have only three more aligners to go on my bottom teeth, but still 23 with my top teeth. My bottom teeth look amazing. The top still have a lot of movement to go.

I would defiantly recommend invisalign. I think some of the stories I have read on here were errors on the part of the doctors and a lack of communication. Shop around for a doctor and find one you can talk to and discuss all of your options and expectations. Most will have free consultations.
