WORTH IT$6,415

I've wanted a tummy tuck for years now. In fact after our third I had a consultation and received a quote for nearly $10,000 in Michigan. Everything happens for a reason because I didn't have the procedure done now 3 years later we have 4 boys, their ages are 8, 6, 3 and 1.

We hadn't planned on a fourth but I guess it was meant to be. I'd been feeling really down about my body since having our fourth and my workouts at the gym just weren't helping. I was going to the gym almost 5 days a week and though the rest of my body was responding my abdomen just sagged lower and lower. The fold of flabby skin hanging added even more inches to my waistline. I'd gone from a size 16 to a 14 but had it now been for my stomach a size 12 would slip right on. I was left wearing my shirts and blouses untucked and still shopping in the maternity for tops that wouldn't reveal the large bulge at my mid-section. I also grew tired of wearing body slimmers and shapers under every outfit. It was the beginning of summer and I wanted to show off some of my hard work but I'd have to find slimmers or Spanx to hide under shorts and tank tops.

The worst of all was the toll it was taking on my dear husband who has always been so supportive. He tells me every day about how beautiful I am but I still couldn't believe him. It’s hard to believe someone else finds you attractive when you don't believe it for yourself.

Our love life was suffering as well as I'd make him turn out all of the bedroom lights before intimacy, most of our encounters would happen in pitch darkness. Even still I wouldn't want him to touch my mid-section because doing so would make me uneasy during our love-making.

So, finally I decided to go for it. I researched the plastic surgeons in my area using the service review sites, physician grade services and referral pages. I also asked around and received a name that I'd come across in my research. After a little more digging I decided on a doctor.

My first consultation was wonderful. There was very little waiting and the staff was very friendly and understanding. The doctor was very patient, answered all of my questions and was careful to make sure I understood all of my options. He explained the chances of post op complications and wanted to ensure that I had realistic expectations. (I'm not a small figured woman but I wanted the surgery anyway). Most importantly the good doctor didn't make me feel rushed as though he had other more important patients and matters to tend to.

The consultation ended with my scheduling and payment arrangements. Once again the staff was thorough, kind and understanding. I was walked through the entire schedule and payment timeline and was thrilled that I could pay for my procedure using Care Credit. The big day took forever to come but I prepared for it by watching my diet and supplement intake. I maintained a positive attitude and gathered support from my family and friends who were as excited as I was about my new body.

I must admit the day before surgery was not so glamorous, Miralax and Dulcolax are a powerful combination but I was surprised to have absolutely no cramping or pain associated with my bowel prep. The morning of pre op the surgical met me and made me feel very comfortable. Once again they explained everything to me all the way down to how I would feel when I woke up a few hours later.

The last thing I remember was speaking to the anesthesiologist about the boys and what seemed like minutes later I was waking up with a nurse at my bedside. By the time my husband arrived I was feeling pretty good. My throat was a bit sore but the nurse gave me sips of water to help out. I was home about an hour later and on the road to recovery and my new body image.

The first two days were interesting. I had to find the right dosage of pain meds for my pain level. Too much made me goofy and too little made moving about such a bother. But I was able to walk around beginning the day after surgery and every day following my range of motion improved. I was sure to stay away from lifting heavy items, especially our 1 year old (not picking him up for the month before surgery helped him to get use to the new idea).

I learned very quickly that it would be unwise to watch comedy while recovering the first week. Laughing, coughing and sneezing were extremely painful endeavors so I learned to laugh from the throat, sneeze with my mouth open and cough shallowly while holding my abdomen tightly with a pillow if possible.

It is now day 6 post op and I have been to the gym twice. First on day 4 when I walked slowly (2.0) on the treadmill for 30 min. and the second time yesterday when I went for 25 min on the elliptical cycle. I’ve moved from taking two pain killers every 4 to 6 hours down to 1 pill every 5 to 6 hours. I hope to move onto over-the-counter pain medication by next week. I will provide photos shortly to show my progress.

Congratulations on your new body!! I am totally impressed that you were in the gym twice your first week following your procedure. Good Job!! I was home in tears for the first 10 days and the last thing on my mind was the gym. I couldnt laugh, cry, cough, sneeze, take a deep breath or get off the toilet by myself for the first week. Anyway congratulations and best wishes for a quick recovery. You should post some before and after pictures.

LOL, that is so funny, rest assured that I share your pain when it comes to the coughing, laughing and sneezing. I try to grab a pillow, squeeze it as tight as physically possible around my incision and get it out with a good go. There are times when i don't have a pillow near by so I take slow shallow coughs until my throat is clear, when I need to. I will post my photos very soon... I am hoping that my surgeon will allow me to have of copy of his taken just before surgery.

Hello Again Kimmers25, I am doing very well. I am nearly back to my pre op physical strength. I've rev'd up my workouts and I am back to driving myself around. I am completely off of pain medication and hopefully this week I'll be able to start sleeping in a bed again. I return to my PS tomorrow and with any luck he'll have a digital copy of my before photos so that I can post them. How are you? Mommy X 4

Thank you for your comments and questions, I will do my best to address them satisfactorily. 1) Yes, I did have a full tummy tuck with mucsle repair. I have a very high tolerance for pain. 2) I am a physically active, military veteran and mother to four boys. I am extremely healthy and always follow my doctor's advice. 3) Just keep in mind that for our fourth pregnancy I exercised up until two days before going into labor naturally. All of my pregnancies were to term, healthy and delivered vaginally. I believe my doctors when they say that light exercise is the key to a speedy recovery. At the gym I walked for 30 min. at only 2.0 mi/hr. The next visit to the gym I exercised for 25 min. at a very low resistance and speed. I don't recommend running anytime soon but raising your heart rate aids in healthy blood circulation and recovery. Also keep in mind that every body is different just like everyone's recovery. I am very happy with my results and rate of recovery, I wish you the best of luck with your's.

I can agree with you Mommy X 4, that movement is important. I actually wanted to start exercising or walking sooner, but felt I needed to follow the instructions to a "t". However, by the end of the first week, I knew my body was ready and capable of activity. It is not for everyone. I think we should all use common sense as to what is appropriate for our bodies. At this time, I am approximately 17 days post-op and am exercising at least 30 minutes 3-4 times per week doing steady light walking. So if it works for you Mommy X 4, do your thing. Wish you the best in your recovery.

Thanks 1love and good luck with your recovery as well. It sounds like we're on the same exercise routine. I went back this morning for another 30 min. and I feel good this afternoon. Question: Are you wearing your compression garment to the gym? My nurse said it was okay to wear Spanyx in lieu of the garment so I though that would be a good idea to avoid sweating all over my garment.
User Avatar
August 19, 2010
Mommy X 4, I actually do wear my compression garment. My PS hasn't recommended that I workout, so I've never asked. However, he did recommend that I wear Spanx and my compression garment at this stage. So when I work out, I take my Spanx off and wear my compression garment. It's fine thus far. I am just washing my binder. I actually have a binder that wraps around my abs/hips.

Hello,
So happy to hear that my review was of some assistance to you:
1- Reduce or eliminate your caffeine intake
2- If you are a smoker, please consider cessation aids during your healing process
3- Every body is different, know your limitations: I exercise everyday (both then and now); moving helps the blood to circulate and helps the healing process. But don't over do it!
4- Drink plenty of hydrating and healthy fluids
5- I still have my scar, but it scar easily and develop keloids sometimes, so this was expected. However, my scar is not noticeable in low cut jeans or in a two piece... I just ensure the cut works with my scar before purchase.
6- Be sure to ask Dr. Uroskie about scar minimizing creams or treatments, he won't steer you wrong! :-)

Good Luck!

I woke up this morning and for the first time since my procedure I was able to get up out of my chair without waiting for my pain to subside. I’ve been sleeping in our family room since last Monday. Sleeping in a recliner made it easy to sleep comfortably and still allowed me to get up on my own in the middle of the night without waking my husband for help. The arrangement has really made the nights a lot easier on everyone. Anyway… today marks a week since my procedure and I can’t believe how far I’ve come in such little time. I plan to go to the gym again today for another 30 min. workout. I’m not sure which workout I’ll feel up to but I know that with each day of activity my recovery status improves dramatically. Yesterday, my husband and I took the boys to a Sunday morning matinee movie at the mall. I felt as though we needed to reward them for being so understanding and helpful this past week. Our oldest is only 8 and next in line is our 6 year old, the two helped out with the laundry, meal preps, house cleaning and chasing down their two younger brothers when it was difficult for me to get around quickly. I don’t always give them credit but they are very well disciplined and follow my instruction very well (most of the time). I believe that this week will flow a lot more smoothly than last week with me ending my prescription pain medications. Yesterday I decided to take 2 Aleves (approved by my Dr) and I was able to make it through the entire day without taking anything else until bedtime (I’m still taking my prescription meds for bed because I move a lot when I sleep). I’ve been needing naps for the last week so we’ll see what this week brings. I’m not use to napping but if that’s what my body’s telling me I put on a good movie, position the child gates and the boys and I settle in the family room for an hour or two. I’ll try to get my husband to take some photos before work this morning. And if not tomorrow I’ll get before and after shots from my Dr.

Ok so jealous :-) I'm 5 wks post-op and I have just got to the point where I can stand-up straight. I consider myself like most of the women that I have read on the post...healthy, normal weight, active. Just goes to show that everybody's body reacts and heals differently...lucky me :-) Be careful with your little workouts..you don't want to widen the incision. Take care and I wish you continued success with your recovery. -Jenna-

I am so glad that I finally found someone who is going through what I am experiencing! I had a tummy tuck three weeks ago and I still can't stand straight. I am 31. Before my operation I worked out five times a week. I hope I can stand straight by five weeks. Please tell me it was worth it for you.

Okay Jenna, I am the one that should be jealous; your photos are simply marvelous. If I’d had a stomach like yours to begin with I’d never consider surgery. I’ve always been full figured but the pouch was just unbearable for me but I can only assume that the same goes for all of us having the procedure done. But anyway, great job on your recovery and let me know what you’re using for your scar treatment. Looking good Lady! Mommy X 4

Rockymama, I will be 6wks post-op tomorrow and I am 99% able to stand up straight. This past week was a good week for me...not that this experience has been bad but I did not anticipate being hutched over for so long. As for your question, "was it worth it?" I am very happy with the results and I am glad that I did it. I am 37 years old and I have (2) children. With my second child (who is currently 8) I had an emergency c-section...he was 10lbs 1ounce. I consider myself an average woman...5ft 6in and I wear a size 6 sometimes 4. That pregnancy left me pretty scarred up and now I do not see any of those scars on the front of my tummy area. Unfortunately, I still have them on my hips but I knew going into this that their was nothing that could be done about those. If you are still unable to stand straight, don't force it...your body will let you know when it is ready. I wish you a speedy recovery and just know you are not alone :-)

Hello Tesslove, Thank you for your comments. I am happy to hear that you are feeling better and able to get around on your own now. Let me know how it goes with the Shea butter. I just had my stitches removed yesterday and my nurse recommended cocoa butter but I use Palmer's cocoa butter anyway. I'd like to know if switching to Palmer's shea butter will make a difference. In the meantime good luck with your recovery and stay healthy. Mommy X 4

I have a question for everyone, After your tummy tuck procedure did you notice a large drop in your weight? (By 'large' I mean more than the average 5 to 10 pounds normally attributed to the skin and fat that was removed). Mommy X 4

I was weighed by my ps about 11 days post op and I did not lose or gain any weight. It was the same. I was a little disappointed and concerned that I may need to adjust my diet. Anyway, I think the weight loss depends on the amount of skin and fat that was removed. As well as how you've adjusted your diet, such as salt intake and fluid retention. I haven't weighed since the 10th of August. I think I will wait until my next ps appointment on August 31st.

Hi Mommy x 4 I was wondering was lipo included in your tummy tuck ?
User Avatar
January 31, 2011
Hello,
Liposuction was not included in my original procedure but afterwards my doctor saw a little symmetry issue so he did go in for lipo. A very small procedure that required only local numbing and a mild sedative.
