Pre-op Completed- Waiting for Medical Clearance

Nervous- currently waiting for medical clearance for a 6/7 surgery date. I interviewed 3 doctors in the New York City area, all found through realself.com and I am very confident in my decision. Dr. Reish was extremely personable (although they all are) but what makes him stand out is his training and experience. He has completed extensive training at Harvard and Harvard's affiliated hospital which is one of THE best hospitals in the country. He is part of a surgical group and seems to do more surgeries than the other doctors because the group has multiple locations that seem very busy and reputable. I am a nervous wreck. I've been considering this surgery for years but always too scared of the pain, possible complications and downtime. I finally booked it and at this point, I just want it over so I can begin healing and hopefully enjoy some of my summer. I take comfort in reading all of your stories and hope mine can help some of you all along the way.

Update- Medical clearance complication

DRose77

My PCP isn’t giving me medical clearance until I am cleared by a hematologist. I called almost every single one in NYC and finally got in on a cancellation for tomorrow. I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be finished in time for my 6/7 surgery date. I’m waiting for the surgeon’s office to call me back and let me know what this means for scheduling. Now we are getting dangerously close to my daughter’s 6/22 high-school graduation and a christening on 6/24 that I will have to stand up and hold the baby a Godmother. If I end up having the surgery next week do any of you have advice on the reality of doing these 2 things around 9 or 10 days after surgery? I don’t want to harm myself.

Well the surgery went well. The nurses as staff were so sweet s nurturing calming my nerves and staying with me until I went in. After surgery I felt fine and only took oxycodone every 5-6 hours. I didn’t end up sleeping until around 2 am, but was able to walk around with a cane etc. I didn’t reach for anything I just did laps around the apartment slowly and all hunched over. I ordered in but 2 bites of a turkey burger (patty only) and a few sips of milkshake and my stomach swelled up so much it was painful. This morning I woke up in a lot of pain, even though I didn’t let me pain meds lapse. My right drain was burning me just hurting a if I had a toothache in my abdomen. The nurse called to check on me and said I could loosen my binder. I had a really scary episode where I sat up to go to the restroom, got really nauseous, then things started going black and I was dripping in sweat. I didn’t actually pass out but started fading in and out of sleep. I’ve since gotten up and walked. The pain is pretty bad. I got a smoothie and a few sips once again had me swollen and in pain so I’m going to just nibble on plain gluten free waffles when taking meds since they don’t seem to swell me. I also plan on just sipping one broth for dinner. I’m worried about getting enough nutrition at this point but can’t handle the swelling pain from eating. I hope tomorrow is better.

In retrospect the pain wasn’t bad it was the binder being way too tight. My ribs still feel bruised!
