I have always suffered with nose problems...

WORTH IT
I have always suffered with nose problems including breathing, allergies, infection, and extremely nasal quality to my voice, etc. When I was in high school I had gotten a written MRI report (not visual) from an MRI scan I volunteered to do for an unrelated study. My local ENT read the report, looked up my nose with a scope, and told me I was just swollen from allergies and that a 6 day Prednisone treatment would fix me up. I was told that my septum was in pretty good shape and not to worry about it. I did not even get a follow up appointment.

Eventually through a friend I was recommended to Dr. Romo and I got a CT scan (this one was visual) of my nose. Dr. Romo was able to immediately identify that my septum was NOT a good shape. It was extremely deviated, causing one of my sinuses to become completely blocked, I had a bone spur, and my turbinates were extremely swollen. He noted that as the head of facial plastic surgery at Lenox Hill he sees a LOT of noses and I was in the top 10 percentile of worst cases.

Dr. Romo and his team took their time with me over the course of several appointments to establish a plan to get the breathing results I wanted and walked me through my cosmetic options as well in an educational way, not in a pushy, make-the-sale way. They encouraged me to air all of my concerns so that they could be addressed and to take my time in making a decision.

I decided to get my nose straightened out and have the bump taken down because it was something I saw myself doing in the future, but any surgery, A. Is never fun and B. Leaves scar tissue, so I decided to get this done in the same procedure. We booked a date, the hospital staff was extremely comforting and courteous, and the surgery went "better than expected" as Dr. Romo told my dad in the waiting room, as they were able to remove polyps, pus, and infection that had not even really shown up on the scans, opening up my airways even more.

The post op week was not fun really, but pain was absolutely minimal. I was prescribed a weeks worth of Vicodin but I did not even need one dose of it. Tylenol alone was completely sufficient to dull the little pain I had. When I got my splint off after 5 days I was really wowed by the look of my nose, looking in the mirror is still a little trippy, but in a good way. At this point I am about 2 months post op and my breathing is immeasurably better, I am sleeping with my mouth closed for the first time. I am extremely happy with my breathing and cosmetic results. My friends have noticed that my voice sounds less nasal, which I had previously been very self conscious about. I can't recommend Dr. Romo and his team enough and I cannot stress how worth it it is to see a GREAT doctor, NOT your local Joe Shmoe!
