Unfortunately, I inherited a severe overbite from my dad's side of the family. I had two oral surgeries, years of braces, and my orthodontist recommended I consider getting jaw surgery at age 18 to correct my bite completely. I'm 20 years old now, and while my overbite doesn't bother me, I don't like the way it makes the lower half of my face look. My chin is short, making my face look round. I also have a deep labiomental fold that makes my chin look pointy in my profile. My insecurity led me to research surgeries that can be done to correct it. My two options are orthognathic surgery, jaw surgery where my lower jaw would be moved forward to fix the skeletal problem causing the odd appearance of my chin, or sliding genioplasty, a surgery that fixes just the cosmetic appearance of the chin as opposed to the bite. I decided to opt for the sliding genioplasty since jaw surgery is a much more complicated and invasive procedure that has more potential complications and requires a much longer recovery. I also didn't want to have to wear braces for another year which would be the case if I decided to go the orthognathic surgery route.
I met with both a plastic surgeon and maxillofacial surgeon before deciding to go with Dr. Monasebian, a Manhattan-based doctor who is both a plastic and maxillofacial surgeon. I've had one consultation with Dr. Monasebian so far, and I felt extremely comfortable around him and his staff. The doctor was extremely informative and knowledgeable, and he took his time explaining everything to me. Nurse Samantha is very friendly and made me feel very at ease, even while discussing an insecurity that I'm embarrassed to talk about. The only staff member I wasn't completely thrilled with was the patient coordinator. I can't explain exactly what rubbed me the wrong way, but I didn't get good vibes from her.
Dr. Monasebian recommended that I undergo a sliding genioplasty to move my chin down and lengthen my face. He also recommended that I have chin liposuction to remove the fat that's under my chin as a result of my overbite. He informed me that my recovery from these procedures would take about 10 days before I could resume normal activity, and I would experience swelling, bruising, and feelings of tightness in my bottom teeth. The doctor thinks that it'll be a big improvement and a better alternative to undergoing jaw surgery. He mentioned that although it is not a common procedure, he has performed many sliding genioplasties in is 20 plus years of experience as a plastic surgeon due to his training as both a plastic and maxillofacial surgeon.
I left Dr. Monasebian's office feeling incredibly excited and at ease. I'm currently in the process of getting x-rays from my local dentist to send to Dr. Monasebian before my digital imaging consultation next week. During this appointment, Dr. Monasebian will use the latest technology to show me my projected result based on my x-rays. After that, I'll likely make a pre-op appointment either in Manhattan or somewhere closer to where I live to get blood work done and then I'll book my surgery for mid-May.
I'll be back to report on my appointment next week!
