I first read about Botox for Migraines about 5 years ago. As someone who has suffered horrible, debilitating migraines that last for days at a time for the last 18 years, and who has tried everything to no avail, I was intrigued. But no doctors in my area offered this service- at least without trudging into NYC.
I was taking over 300mg a day of Topamax, along with whatever the flavor of the month treatment was. I was having trouble remembering words, and constantly missing work and canceling with my friends. 3 years ago I saw a local plastic surgeon had written an article on the benefits of Botox for migraines. As nothing had been working, I immediately called his office and made an appointment.
When I arrived, he said he did not do injections for migraines as he was not a neurologist, but offered me the name of a doctor who was qualified. He asked me if I wanted to get the Botox treatment for my forehead and crows feet while I was there, and let me know if I didn't, he completely understood. I figured what the heck, I was there, and it couldn't hurt.
I am so glad I went in for that consultation. About a week and a half later, I noticed that my migraines no longer throbbed as badly behind my eye. I could actually function when I had a headache. I called the neurologist he recommended and made an appointment.
That was 3 years ago. I now go every three months for Botox injections from the same neurologist. They allow me to live life again. I no longer am violently vomiting and hiding in a dark, silent room for days at a time. I can go out with my friends. I can even eat a little piece of Swiss cheese! I am down to 100mg of Topamax, and a simple Excedrin when I get a headache.
That's not to say it's all wonderful. I do still get migraines. They are just manageable and not debilitating. I also find that the Botox does not last the full three months. I only get about 9 weeks before I start getting the really bad, hide in a dark room, I can only see out of one eye, migraines again.
The cost is also high. I am lucky because my current insurance covers part of the treatment. The Botox itself costs me $250 under my insurance, and the Drs visit $185. Without insurance, the cost of the Botox is $1000 and the Dr is $485.
But I would still take the Botox over anything else I've tried. The worst side effect I have had is an odd wrinkle over my right eye (the neurologist isn't really concerned with perfecting my wrinkles, so his Botox injections sometimes leave my wrinkles looking off). This was easily fixed by visiting the plastic surgeon, who for $70 made me look flawless.
This is the best treatment I have tried and I would seriously recommend it to anyone who suffers bad migraines.

I'm so happy for you- sounds like the botox is really helping.  Is it possible to get a top off after 9 weeks when your symptoms start to come back?  Or does your insurance specify how much time needs to go in between treatments?

Thank you. Botox has really has made a huge difference in my life. I know that my insurance specifies 3 months between treatments (and I go back the first day I can!), but I think that actually is the way Botox is supposed to be prescribed as well. I know there is a fear that you can build up a tolerance to the drug and that it can become less effective over time... I am not sure if that is one of the reasons why they only do it every 3 months though... I do know that for some people, the treatments are needed less often as time progresses (ie, every 6 months rather than every 3). I have not had that experience, but I have met people who have.

Hopefully you are one of the people who need it less and less versus one of the people who develop a tolerance :)

I'm so glad insurance companies are starting to come around and pay for botox as a migraine treatment- it really works well for so many people.
