Morpheus8 — Beware

I went to my usual medspa with concerns about early signs of aging. I am 43 and have begun seeing the onset of jowls starting to emerge, as well as deepened smile lines. I was recommended a series of 3 Morpheus8 treatments. My research made it seem as if this was a miracle procedure. The before and after photos were wonderful, and it was said to be minimally invasive, which I liked. Two days of downtime, a little redness, then I can go about my life as usual.

I was mistaken.

The day of the first procedure went great. They slathered me with lidocaine and had me sit for a solid hour while it numbed my entire face. I felt nothing. Not a single pinprick. The nurse practitioner went over my entire face, paying close attention to my problem areas. I was later instructed to be gentle on my skin for the rest of the day. Use no active ingredients (retinols, VitC, etc) for a week and nothing with fragrance. She said i could continue my Hyaluronic Acid and snail creams as they are great for the skin and continue with a thick moisturizer as I could expect some patchy peeling as the skin regenerates.

That first day I was red and sore. It was similar to a sunburn. I washed with Cetaphyl and used Hyaluronic Acid as I was told. I’m assuming this was my first mistake. The redness began to subside as the day progressed. At night, i washed again, used the snail cream and a moisturizer as recommended, Changed my sheets and pillowcases for fresh clean ones, and went to bed.

The next morning, it all went south. Angry, red patches began to emerge. They were unsightly, but when I called the spa, i was told it was normal. Keep moisturizing and start using Cicaplast cream as well. By the evening, my face had gone from bad to worse. By the next morning, it was a horror movie.

My face broke out in a reaction the likes of which I had never seen before. i had related it to Poison Ivy, as that’s what it looked like. It was raised, red welts covering my entire face and jaw. Itchy, too. I immediately stopped using any skincare products. Once again, I called the spa and asked to come in. Two nurse practitioners and the manager all told me the reaction was normal and tried to give me a small container of pure Hyaluronic Acid, which i refused. Then another gave me a tube of Hydrocortisone and sent me on my way.

By day three, the welts began leaking puss. I went to the walk in clinic the moment it opened and was examined by a doctor who diagnosed me with a severe bacterial infection. He gave me a steroid shot and a prescription for oral/topical antibiotics as well as an oral steroid. Slowly but surely, the welts began to heal. It took about a week before the swelling subsided (still very red, and now the needle holes were visible) and I waited another week before I began easing back into any kind of skincare.

Yesterday was 4 weeks since the Morpheus8 procedure and my skin is far from healed. The raised welts have completely disappeared, but my face is still red and lumpy in spots. Its not smooth the soft the way it was prior and I certainly cannot go out without makeup. Its the worst around and under my jaw. You can literally see the jagged path she took as she stabbed into me 4 weeks ago.

I am seeing a dermatologist today to discuss how to correct the damage that was done by this procedure. Hopefully, its it isn’t permanent. If you are considering Morpheus8, please be wary and think twice.
