Awful Experience

I am very upset and disappointed with the Miradry procedure I had done here in October 2020. First, every time I went, I would always end up waiting at least 20 minutes past my appointment time to be seen, which I get it you can run behind, but this happened all 4 times I went. I went for the consult and it was fine, Amy was very nice and performed my procedure the 2nd time I went in. My size was definitely not taken into account for the procedure as I was given way to much lidocaine which is the numbing agent. I have been given lidocaine before and had no issues but this time I was given way too much as I am very small and had very skinny arms, I ended up fainting a total of 4 times within 48 hours after having the procedure done. I was also told not to put anything on my underarms except ice packs or frozen water bottles to keep the area cool, when come to find out, I should have been putting an antibiotic ointment to prevent burning and blisters, so I now have dark ugly scars. You are also not supposed to sweat for awhile after this procedure, there is supposed to be a lot of sweating a month later cause it is pushing everything out, then it is supposed to die down a lot. Well I began sweating like crazy just 4 days after my procedure, and it was crazy because I was so swollen. I was swollen almost all the way down to my forearms, to my upper chest and armpits, to my upper back and shoulder blades. All of this was very concerning so my mother called and they really just blew her off like oh it’s fine the lidocaine is just working it’s way out of her system, lots of swelling is normal just keeping icing. We were also told this procedure would help eliminate armpit hair, so I was very excited as I had been getting laser done and figured this would be it, but no, I now had way more hair than I started with before even doing laser, so an even larger waste of money. I had a lot of numbness and tingling in my arms down to my fingers and still major swelling following the procedure so I decided to go back after a month to see dr Soto himself and figure out what was going. When we called we were under the impression we would be seeing dr Soto but we saw Amy instead who had no idea what was going and just kept saying it’s fine just wait longer. Very upset, I asked to see dr Soto and they instead told me to come back to see him. My final trip there, we finally see dr Soto, a month and a week after my procedure, and he straight up lies many times saying miradry is the highest rated procedure on this plastic surgery platform when it was actually breast augmentation, miradry was like 7 or 8 on the list, and when trying to figure out my nerve issue, he said there has never been any nerve damage from miradry when there was actually a study done on a woman who had brachial plexus if you simply google miradry complications. Not only did he straight up lie to us, he decided to say my swelling was healthy tissue and likely extra fat I gained from my birth control. I have been taking my birth control for four years now and have had zero issues. Soto also tested my nerves by having me push on his hands and fingers and said oh no that’s normal you’re fine. He just kept blowing everything off and making excuses for everything then suggested I do the procedure again. I was so upset I simply just said okay and left to never return. Seeing another doctor I come to find out I had compressed nerves from major swelling and accute nerve damage from the procedure. I have been having to get lymphatic messages to bring down the swelling and have been waiting for my nerves to heal, after 5 months now, when the total heal time is supposed to be 3 months. Such an upsetting and disappointing experience, do not go here as you will waste every penny and be belittled while you’re at it.
Miradry is an FDA cleared, safe and effective treatment for reduction of underarm sweat and hair growth. No one at Miradry or in my office has ever said it would lead to a sweat free and hair free life. This would require magic.
Fainting is often seen in very anxious/emotional people, but is rare with lidocaine, and not 48 hours after the fact, as the lidocaine is metabolized well before then. Dosing of lidocaine is standardized and done by patient weight, not how skinny their arms are, and toxicity is extremely unlikely (close to impossible) in healthy people (the only ones we do Miradry on) using this standardized dosing.
Swelling is highly variable, but normal and temporary. Providers vary in their management but antibiotic ointment is only necessary if the patient has blisters or broken skin.
Any nerve injury resulting from the treatment (because it would necessarily be close to the spinal cord) would lead to loss of function on examination. When a patient has an absolutely and completely normal examination but continues to complain of vague symptoms that don’t make any sense given human anatomy, we try to reassure them through education. If their nature prevents this, we offer to refer them for nerve conduction studies , which would prove intact nerves and normal function, or identify an injury and it’s location. No one has ever required this in my practice.
I never lie to my patients. Not only would this be counter to everything I believe, it is unnecessary. I do, however, sometimes have a problem with very selective retention of information- especially by very young, emotionally volatile and anxious people.
Unfortunately, being good to all of my patients means that sometimes one of them takes more of my time than expected. I believe that those who have to wait to see me as a result know that I will do the same for them when they need me, and most reasonable people accept this as a reality of visiting a reputable physician. We also do what we can to compensate our patients for excessive wait times, and the success of our system seems evident in the well over 1000 very positive testimonials of our patients’ experiences now available online.
While many of your statements could not possibly be true of our practice and certainly do not reflect the truthful experience of any patient we have treated, I do hope you find peace and wish you the best going forward.
