Hey guys and gals,
I am a 26 year old guy. I started gaining weight when I was young. The weight gain and lack of activities resulted me being an obese kid at the edge of 11. Same lifestyle continued until I was 18. At that point, my brother planned his wedding for the August of 2008. I decided enough is enough and zi need to change this. Main reason was other's comments about how cute snd chubby I was. I hated it. I did not find it funny or cute. I looked at my eldest brother's wedding photos and I was obese. I also realozed that age 18 I can't be much active and enjoy life. Once I got into college, I became friends with a guys whom which is my best friend up to this day. We strated running outside and lifting 4 times a week for 9 months. I started dieting and actually changing my lifestyle. Over the 9 months I lost around 100lbs. No one recognized me at the wedding. That me really proud. I moved back to thr states 6 months after that. I started college in MN and the weight kept creeping back up despite me working out. This had to do with bad dirt and lack of money as a student. Yup. Like that zi regained all thay weight plus some more. In 2011 I graduated from college. I knee what needed to be done. So I started my routine. I knew what needed to be done. I started running 5Ks 4 times a week for 6 months and came down from 250 to 212. I started doing crossfit. With that I dropped the weight down to 192 and gained a lot of muscle mass. I completely changed my eatimg style. No more greasy food. Lower carb and sugary stuff. Protien intake increased dramatically. Due to back injuries I stepped away from Crossfit and resumed lifting. I dropped down to 180 which is my current weight. My legs and upper body are in good shape. Not so much with the stomach.

I researched around and found Dr. Tholen. After many hours of research I made the appointment. I went to it and had a great meeting with Dr. Tholen. I knew he is the guy to help me reach my goal at that point. I made the surgery date so I would not back out of it.

Dr. Tholen was nice enough to give me his cellphone number and told me to reach out to him if anything comes up. I have talked to him 3 times over phone and he has been assuring and helpful. Such a great guy.

So here I am. A bit anxious. Just about the recovery process. I don't like uncertainty. We have 2 cats and Dr. Tholen said they are a big NO NO. I cannot be around them due to higher chances of infection with cats. So I will be confined in my room with my PS3. My mental situation will be tested for sure. Thanks to my beautiful wife for taking a full week of to take care of me, this should be no problem.

I will upload pictures from old times to present to show the progression.

Congratulations on your weight loss. The recovery period for me was 6 weeks. 6 weeks at home with my PS4. There wasn't any pain for me, just a bit of discomfort. I strongly recommend hiring a hospital bed for your recovery, it was so comfortable and I didn't have one bad night sleep. They're so cheap and well worth the money. Best of luck.

Sleep did suck for me. I am just finally starting to sleep better. I used a bed wedge and pillows. I know why people get hospital beds and recliners now!

Thanks for the kind words and info. I thought about renting out a recliner but my surgeon thinks I should be good with a wedge pillow and pillows under my feet. To be honest I have physical room limitation. We have to cats. My doctor said they are big no nos and not allowed in my bedroom. There is not much wiggle room for me to put the bed and recliner in there. So I am going to cross my fingers for decent sleep. I will be on muscle relaxant which should ease up the pain a bit.

Aside from that, I moved my PC in the room to work remotely after the 3rd week. Also TV and PS3 are moving in my room. Just got all of the God of Wars series lol

Yeah I wish I could do that. Between a bed (for the wife), and a computer desk, there is virtually no room for the recliner. To make things worse, my mother in law will be in town and I can't use the guestroom. My PC desk was in there and I had to move it to my room...

Ahhhh, I set my hospital bed up in the living room so had lots of space. I'd be weary of cats too. My dog jumped up on my bed and onto my stomach the day after I came home from hospital, the pain!!!

Lol my cats are big too. Main concern is infection. Cats use litter boxes and they can carry fecal matters whenever they walk. Dogs poop outside and don't walk on it. So no kitty for me for a while

What surgery are you doing ?
That is the only Dr I've ever heard of mentioning cats .
December 9, 2016
I had a lower body lift. He is not against cats or pets. His reasoning is cats walk in their litter box and can move around [RS bleep]. When people allow them in the bedroom or wherever they sit/sleep, it raises the chance of infection. Our cats are not allowed in the bedroom so he is fine with it. His words are true as we have two long hair ragdolls and they always have poop stuck to their bottom or paws. He is fine with dogs since they poop outside and wont walk on it

When wasLBL ? Mine is next Thursday. How was pain ? How long was it before you could manage on your own ?

It was on Monday. First night sucked. I am mobile now and do most thing on my own. It is all dependent on your body strength. I consider my self pretty strong. My upper is compensating for the core. You will pretty much will have no control over your abs. Simple task of poopinf is going to be hard. You wont be able to push the stool. I am writing my daily experience here. I suggest taking a peak. I'd pretty much list the hardships and improvements.

Yesterday met with my primary care and took care of the exam. Things look good. I am getting super nervous now.
My plan was to lose a bit more weight but due to schedule issues I put up 6lbs. It kind of made me depressed. I feel like I let myself down. Man, my mind is playing tricks on me. Won't lie. I am a bit of nervous wreck. Phew. As for the weight gain, i think it is mostly water weight. I have sever ongoing constipation and retain good amount of stool internally as well. Dr. Tholen has been great responding to my concerns. I have texted him multiple times, even on the last weekend and he has been great. Sorry for bothering you so much lol
Main thing is to have stool softener on hand. My PC wants me to take 1tsp of Miralax each day to help my constipation. I am also on 8mcc of Amitiza. Dr. Tholen emphasises on using Fleet Enema the night before and morning of the surgery. Hopefully these help me get through the recovery and the constipation.

I have been at the gym non stop for the past 10 days. I am planning on uping my cardio amd lifts while I can. It makes me sad to know that I will lose some of my strength. It will be a rebuild all over again lol

I'm currently three weeks in to my lower body lift recovery and I totally understand your concern about your weight. I worked out like a crazy person before my surgery because I was fearful of gaining weight. I lost my weight with diet and exercise and unlike most people, I need more exercise than diet to lose. So far, I have been maintaining and that was my goal. That said, I have been EXTREMELY careful about what I put in my body. I won't lie, this is a long recovery, but once it's done, all you have to do is keep moving forward. The more fit you go into this, the easier it will be to get it back when it's time. Good luck to you! If you could lose all that weight, you will get through this!

Thanks a lot for the kind words. I have the tendency of over thinking issues. I need to chill out. How is your recovery so far? Pretty tough in beginning? Any antibiotics afterwards?
November 30, 2016
The first few days sucked. I woke up and felt like I was hit by a truck. Every day gets better and at three weeks out, I'm still sore, I have a few spots that are draining and opening bc the stitches are popping out, but I'm moving around and am able to take 1 mile walks daily. Slow walks that feel like I haven't worked out in a year, but walks none the less. I was running up to 3-5 miles per cardio session, so slow walking is hard to deal with, But this is my second surgery, my first was 9 months ago when I had an arm and breast lift, and after I had the go ahead to resume normal workouts, I was back in shape within 6 weeks. I am assuming this will be a bit longer, but looking back it will be just a blip in time. I was on antibiotics for a week after the surgery and needed two rounds of Percoset. I only had 30 tabs per prescription. 1/3 of the way into the second round I was only taking one pill during the day and two at night. Then halfway through, I started spacing them farther apart. Make sure you stay on top of the pain in the beginning. I slacked by an hour a few days after I got home and it was no bueno.

I heard from so many to be tough and mentally prepared. It will be slow but worth it. I am glad you are doing well and recovering nicely. My surgeon uses muscle relaxants and another medication to reduce swelling and pain. I read an article on one of the medications and it tends to lower pain and the need for too much narcotics. I believe he wants me to take two different types of antibiotics. I am guessing these as I am going over my RX through Walgreens. He will give me the instructions on the day of the surgery. Thanks so much for responsimg to me. Makes me feel better. I am planning on doing the same to other people to help them as well :)
November 30, 2016
Yeah, physically I was totally prepared and had everything I needed. I was not prepared for the mental recovery this time around. Just keep in mind, the way you are feeling is not permanent!

I'm glad I can help. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any recovery questions. It's different for everyone, but I'd be glad to share my experience with you.

I really appreciate it
