Removal of Juvederm Resulted in Loose Bags over Cheeks (Festoons) That Never Existed Previously

In Aug. of 2012 I traveled out of state to an award-winning plastic surgeon to consult about loss of facial fat due to aging. I was 64 years old, and have always been in good health and maintained a normal weight of approx. 106 lbs. for my 5'2". I do not drink alcohol, don't smoke & I avoid salt. The doctor recommended Juvederm as opposed to permanent solutions (cheek implants) so that I could see the results without committing to a more invasive procedure. I knew from previous uses of Juvederm in my nasolabial folds that it would eventually dissipate over time. Two years after the injections which were done around my upper cheek area, (you can see injections locations in photo), the Juvederm had not resolved, but instead, seemed to be expanding. Over the two years time, I could see my cheeks without looking in a mirror. My face was just not my face anymore. I could see a shallow trough forming between where the Juvederm was injected and where it wasn't. Because the first doctor was out of state, I visited a local Juvederm specialist who said that to add more filler in the trough area would only exacerbate the look and he recommended dissolving. It took two separate visits two weeks apart. The result left draping baggy skin over my cheeks. I never have had that issue before the injections. I compare my loose facial skin to that of an obese person who loses a lot of weight over a short period of time, and is left with hanging skin. I think my skin was expanded for so long that it was somewhat stretched. The bags are much more prominent when I smile. At the age of 64, I do not have the elasticity of a younger person whose skin might have retracted more readily than mine. I do not blame any doctor for this situation. I believe that this product may not be appropriate for the area in which it was injected. I visited a plastic surgeon in my area who recommended a mid-face lift and lower blepharoplasty. I waited for 2 months after I had the Juvederm dissolved to have the surgery. It has been about five weeks since my surgery and the bags are still present but not quite as dramatic. I was told by my surgeon to give it six more weeks to heal. He seemed to think my issue is due to allergies, but I NEVER had these bags before the Juvederm cheek injections. They appeared immediately within 2 days after I had it dissolved, so I am certain the Juvederm or the dissolving or both, is the cause. I am hoping that with time and the help of surgery the skin will retract. I am posting this so that others will think twice about this filler used in the upper cheek area. If anyone has a solution to my issue I would appreciate suggestions. I will post an update in six weeks.

Hmmmnnn... I can feel your pain. As I also underwent having the dissolve under my eyes due to edama issues.. And top of cheek after juvederm placed there it seemed to swell over time not looking natural maybe my body developed a sensitivity to it. Any ways the skin in that area is sadly not the same creepy and kinda discoloration there that was not there prior. I believe the dissolver does work I JUSTDISSOLVES EVERYTHING! IN ITS PATH and they really cannot control the spread factor as that IS the nature of how it's works in the tissues its is meant to disperse. It's like a cup of water that spills you can't really control how far or where the water will spread on its own. I hope you get where you want to be . And find a goodd doctor who can help you heal from this. Best Wishes Letsthink

Goldanimals, I just saw your pics and you don't look like I was expecting at all! I think you notice it more because it's on you and we tend to notice more about what bothers us not what others really see. Then we start obsessing. May I ask how old you are? I'm being truly honest. I think you look great. I've seen some pretty awful pics of others who have had horrible disfigurement from fillers gone really bad!! Try not to be so hard on yourself and Stop looking in the mirror!!! LOL
January 18, 2015
Thank you for the encouragement. I am not obsessing, but I felt it was necessary to get the word out that your face can be changed for the worse rather than the better. I did not show pictures of me smiling with the bags. That is when it is most obvious and disappointing because I am a big smiler. :)

I apologize, I just re-read your post and noticed you had already put your age on there..lol. I think you look great! Whoever did your facelift did a wonderful job! Alot of facelifts have that pulled back look. Yours looks very natural. Just a thought.....have you ever thought to try facial exercises? I believe there's a thread on here about them. Many have reversed complications of fillers and H injections by doing them. There are many programs out there. Flexeffect, Carolyn's Facial Fitness, Facial Detox...to name a few. Maybe it's worth a try??

The doctor who did the facelift is Gaylon McCollough in Gulf Shores Alabama. I can not say enough kind words to describe how I feel about him. He is a master. I have seen several women older than 60 who look so natural you would never guess they had any work done. I plan to post a photo in about six weeks which will show the improvement.

Well, it looks wonderful! You must tell me was is awfully painful? And how was the recovery? And the bigger ? is are you happy with the results thus far? I've always been interested in getting one, I'm very afraid of the pain, how it will look and the cost! How many years does it last?
January 19, 2015
A facelift is not painful, but only requires mild pain medication for the first day or two. I would only go to a doctor whose patients you have seen the results physically and not in photos. Photos can be manipulated. The healing process, depending on your age, physical health and amount of surgery, takes from 1 to three months. Cost is also reflective of amount of surgery. I would say an average cost would be from $5000 to $10,000. This website is one of the most informative I have ever encountered. This is the website of the doctor who performed my lift: http://www.mccolloughplasticsurgery.com/

When will people stop letting doctors use hyuralonidaise ? It dissolves filler and your natural tissue These docs hand it out like candy when people are unhappy with filler.
January 18, 2015
I think the larger question would be is it the Hyuralonidaise that is dissolving natural tissue, or does the injection of Juvederm stretch the skin beyond its ability to return to normal once it is removed.
January 18, 2015
It's the enzyme. Believe me- after having my face destroyed with it- and having spent $$$ on 2 nd and 3 rd opinions- it literally melted my face. At your age, the skin won't bounce back regardless. ( I am close to your age). I had to have a revision facelift from the enzyme. Cost more money than most people's cars. The damage was extensive There is enough trees arch out there to indicate the fact that this destroys tissue. My own documented pics shocked most doctors when I show them. As far as filler- once you start- you have to maintain it. Even post 2 facelifts- I need filler. I think you should consider surgical options Filler alone won't do it for us mature gals. One doctor told me to start putting hormone cream on my face at night to start thickening the skin. He said it will help Everyone has a gimmick I guess
January 18, 2015
Sorry. Some of the auto correct is odd. Not trees- there is enough info out there
January 18, 2015
Who did your surgery? niamtu? I'd go back to him and have him fix it. To be honest- it took almost 2 years for my face to recover from the enzyme.
January 18, 2015
I did not go back to Niamtu because of the distance to travel. I believe the doctors I have been to have not been made aware of the long term effects of filler by the manufacturers. I have faith in the doctors I have seen. Hopefully our messages will have some effect.

RedRoxie The science doesn't really support that explanation. 1/3 of the little natural HA you have in your skin is actually degraded and resynthesised every day. Hyaluronidase doesn't affect the synthesis or the components active in the synthesis of the natural HA, so even if all your natural HA were to be degraded by the hyaluronidase enzyme (which your body also produces naturally all the time) you should resynthesise this HA in a matter of days. It is more likely that the HA filler together with blocked lymphatic function caused a swelling and stretching of the skin which can become evident as sagging skin after the injection. Natural HA is also crucial in wound healing, and the depletion of such HA during the healing process may affect your skins ability to retighten. I don't think you lack natural HA after such an injection.

Hi Roxie, did your face recover natuarllay at all from the enzyme? Or did you seek treatment to improve the look before you could find out?
December 4, 2018
Lol regardless of the science behind it- hyalurondiase casues your face to change permanently, whether it is sagging, volume loss, laxity, call it whatever you want- before and after photos don’t lie. It makes you uglier permanently and because of this, doctors should warn patients of this if a patient is just dissatisfied with filler.

If that final photo is you now I think you look very pretty. You surely don't look 64. I've been getting juvederm for almost 10 yrs. I've only done labial fold areas however my last injection done by a new doctor since I moved injected too much too high on one side. I had hyaluronidase injected about 4-5 times to help dissipate some of it and now I have a sag type area between the labial fold and my cheek as though my cheek has sunken in a bit. Some people/doctors say hyaluronidase doesn't dissolve the skins natural acids and some say it does. I think it does and I think you're right in your logic. I was THINKING of having Juvederm Voluma XC injected in that area to fill it in but I am scared. They say it is the only FDA approved filler for the cheeks. However, I am a firm believer that there comes a time in our age when the face lift is truly what we need opposed to fillers. Who knows!?! I'm doing my research right now. I hope someone else can add info to help you. You've come a long way the hard way but I think you do look great now. So sorry for you, I have an idea of what you've gone through. I bet you get even better at this point from the looks of that photo. GOOD LUCK!

I think a face lift is a better solution than fillers. It lasts much longer, looks more natural, and in the end costs about the same as fillers. It seems to me like the filler causes your own tissue to expand or hold water. Whatever it does, the end result can not be accurately guaged.
January 23, 2015
I agree!

Interesting comment about the dissolving agent. My p.s. Wanted to use it. But a second opinion from another p.s. Said it is not good for large areas either.

Facelift 5 months after Juvederm removed

goldanimals
It has been almost 5 months since the Juvederm was removed, and 3 months after a facelift to fix the resulting loose skin. I am posting a before and after photo to show the difference. The doctor who did the wonderful facelift was Dr. Gaylon McCollough of McCollough Plastic Surgery in Gulf Shores, Alabama. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
