Breast Lift and Lipo: Good Surgery, Horrible Customer Service - Miami, FL

Wanting to get a breast lift and face lift, I went...

cosmic girl
$9,500
Wanting to get a breast lift and face lift, I went and got an appointment with Dr Leonard Hochstein.
I can't say that I had an amazing rapport with him, he was smug and his office was covered with pictures of minor celebrities praising his skills...not a selling point for me, but better that than bad reviews I guess.

I have to say that the place is impressive, I don't think you get to have an office like his if you are not excellent at your job.
He also has books with lots of pictures of past patients, and he's just oozing with confidence.

Now...this office is a real factory...maybe 20 girls working there: nurses/ assistants and other various jobs with tons of clients in the waiting room.

His assistant was sweet and professional but exactly what I don't ever want to look like- completely redone and unnatural looking ( boobs, lips, nose, butt, bleach blond hair...)

A few days after meeting him, because he's supposed to be the best for boobs, I decided to give a deposit and was hoping to do the surgeries around the end of the year.
My goal was to get my old boobs back, so no implants. just a lift and reduction ( from E to a small D), and get a mini face lift at the same time, since they told me I could get back to work after a week and I was planning some time off during the end of the year holidays.
But, a week after I gave the deposit, I had a job opportunity I couldn't refuse.
I contacted his assistant right away to explain the situation and ask if I could get my deposit back since, with this unexpected situation, I now wasn't sure when I was going to be able to do the surgery.
Despite the fact that I wanted to cancel with a 2 months notice and only one week after giving a deposit, the lovely Dr refused to give me my money back...I guess having to pay for his over the top office is more important than offering a fair customer service.

I was really upset and thought that it was absolutely unfair and obnoxious, but I couldn't afford to lose the $3,000 deposit.
I don't understand why such a successful Dr would offer such a horrendous customer service, things happen in life and keeping the money with a 2 months notice isn't right.
That is why I want to make sure to post my review in order to warn people about this fact.

To get to the point: I decided to do the breast lift sooner than expected just to get it over with and not have my money held hostage for an indefinite amount of time.
I also added a liposuction of the abdomen at the same time, just to take advantage of the general anesthesia, since I wasn't able to do the facelift anymore because of the new job.

So, I went to see the Dr for a pre-op appointment and get the blood work etc...
I was introduced to another assistant, not sure why, but no big deal.
A nurse took care of me, not super warm but I didn't expect a red carpet treatment, after all...I'm just one in many, many clients, so no need to treat me particularly nice.
Then I met with the Dr again. I was expecting him to give me some type of speech and explain some stuff about the procedure...nope, he just told me: "I know what I'm doing. Do you have any questions?"
Way to make me feel comfortable...again, sorry I'm taking away your precious time.

Came back for the day of the surgery, when checking in, the nurses told me I had to leave earlier than the time I scheduled.
My brother was supposed to pick me up a 3pm...the nurses literally freaked out, telling me they had a short day and basically made me feel like it was a major inconvenience for me to stay for so long.
My surgery was at 9.30am, they told me I could leave at 11.30am...wow! Kick me to the curb will you?
I might have been able to rush my brother to be picked up earlier, but then I would have been left alone since he had a business meeting to attend.
It seemed counter productive since the reason to have someone pick you up is that you are not alone for the first 24 hours.
Anyway, considering no one told me anything about the fact that it was an issue for me to stay a few hours in the recovery room and that I had to leave right after the surgery until the very morning of it, I can't say I was able to plan otherwise.
Not happy about it, stressful enough to get surgery, not to have on top of things to deal with the employees clearly not wanting me to spend too much time here.

Got in the sexy paper gown and went to a room where the Dr made some marks on my body.
Every time I saw him he was wearing a suit...never saw him in a scrub, even then, right before the surgery...I didn't see him in the recovery room either...

I was picked up at 2pm, I managed to rush my caretaker because I didn't want to inconvenience the staff since they had a short day.

Fist day was awful, I was in pain, major nausea, vomiting everything....really painful to move by myself or get up and lay down on the bed.
Both the Dr and his assistant before the lipo, told me it really wasn't nothing much to worry about and an easy procedure, so I was surprised to feel so awful.
I'm so glad my family was here to help me instead of having a nurse...I needed help for a good 48 hours.

In the evening I got a call from the Dr, he asked me if I had any questions.
I started telling him how awful I felt and all the nausea issue, he interrupted me, being very short: "Do you have any questions?"
I could hear there were people in the back and he was barely listening to my answers.
Took me aback, not cool Dr...I looked on my cell phone, the call lasted 1 minute...can't even give me 5 minutes of your time so you can reassure me and tell me if my symptoms are normal.

The next day was bad too, blood oozing from the incisions everywhere, not pretty, and not feeling great at all.
I thought I had a post op appointment at 10.15 am but it was changed to 12pm...OK, no worries.

Anyway, I got there on time.
I asked the nurse to help me change in new clothes since I was in pain and afraid to hurt myself...she seemed annoyed by my request, I thought it was part of her job, but it looked like I was wrong.
She didn't clean me up at all, just replaced some of the stained pads and told me I could take a shower by myself already, then reluctantly helped me get in my clean sweat pants.
She removed the bandages on the breast, and only then the Dr peeked through the door...literally just a peek, he wasn't even in the room, he had a foot in the corridor and one in my room.
He looked at me from a distance and said everything was fine...so, about 4 seconds of his time.
My breast were connected together in the center of the chest, which didn't look natural, and they seemed uneven...both the nurse and the Dr told me : "Well, it's swollen still."
They made me feel bad, like I was such an ignorant to be concerned about the shape of my body after major surgery.
He didn't even bother to look at the liposuction, just the breasts
Then he left and I did manage to ask: "That's all?"
He said: "Well I have surgery , so if you need more time with me you'll have to wait 2 hours."

At this point I think that he's officially the least pleasant Dr I've ever met.
The nurse didn't make it better by rushing me out and looking like she just couldn't be bothered with me...it was the day before Halloween, so they had more important things to think about I guess.
All the girls in the office were taking selfies and group pictures in their costumes.

I sent an email to his assistant after the weekend to explain that my overall experience was quite unpleasant and that everyone made me feel like a nuisance.
She obviously defended the staff and the Dr by saying that he did tell me he would have more time for me if I wanted to wait 2 hours...
Well, if he's not available to do a proper post-op appointment, why schedule me then?
Doesn't make sense.

After that, the assistant was prompt to answer via email my questions and concerns, but it didn't change the overall bad experience I had with the surgeon.

So, if you don't mind feeling like a piece of meat with an Amex, this place is for you.
I don't know what to expect for the results of my surgeries, I just hope I will heal fast and well, that is the most important after all.
I'm supposed to see him again next week for the 2 weeks follow up appointment.
He was made aware of my comments, I can't say I'm looking forward to go back to this office or see him.
I still want to do a facelift sometime soon, and even if the results I get from his surgeries are outstanding, I never will use this Dr ever again!!
No way I'm giving my money to be rushed and treated like a nuisance , there are other top surgeons to chose from.

I think his assistant is beautiful and her butt is completely natural btw. She's Colombian and blessed with a natural booty. She did have a breast lift and tummy tuck after having children and recently had a rhinoplasty to fix a small bump. I'm planning on having all the same surgeries because having babies and breastfeeding for three years total really took a toll on my body. I hope somebody doesn't talk about me in public like you have her. It's not very nice!
November 6, 2015
I agree, his assistant is beautiful, and if it's her real butt it's impressive !!!
I just expected it wasn't...my bad, and I'm sorry I judged wrongly.
I'm just saying I wouldn't want to look so done, not really a personal attack, I said she was nice and professional.
November 7, 2015
It sounds very judgemental and was really unnecessary. Served no purpose in your review other than to make you look bad. You really have no idea what her story is, well before I told you anyway. It just seems catty and certainly comes off as a personal attack on a very nice person.

She didn't like the place and she can write her review the way she like it.This is not Saudi Arabia where you cannot express your opinions lol
December 3, 2015
And I can express my opinion that's it's not very nice to talk crap about a really nice lady who didn't do anything to her lol has nothing to do with what she thought about the place.
December 3, 2015
She didnt talk crap she said she didnt want to look anything like that.

Odd....I had surgery 3 weeks ago today (the toughest) antique saline overs, pockets revised, full lift, new under the muscle 550 hp implants, tummy tuck and lipo ....not negating your feelings because they are real and you own them..... however....It is interesting that I had a totally different experience in every way ...I saw the doctor several times after ....the words you used negatively ...smug, oozing with confidence.......are the words I was looking for.....after several Drs. telling me that the surgery's I wanted couldn't be done or combined...(other docs said I would need two separate surgery's.....and my scar couldn't be placed as low as I wanted).....he preformed a miracle.....I have a feeling Dr. H could have done this with one eye closed, standing on his left foot while whistling Dixie.....he is that good..........that is why his time is so limited.....and valuable.....might I suggest you write down your questions before hand.....that's what I did....he answered them all....if he says very little....that's a great sign all is well.....oh ....btw....I now look like those girls in the back....due to the Kardashians, [RS bleep] and Victoria Secret models...that is what 95 % of women wish for.....they were all very kind, efficient, and more than accommodating to me....bottom line.....I walked in 45 years old.....breast hanging 6 inches lower.... swinging like door knockers.....wrinkled tummy, looked like a Shar Pei dogs face (two kids ... 88 pound weight gain/then lost)....and thighs that rubbed together.......and three weeks later .......I am ECSTATIC...my results are almost unbelievable.... I cant stop staring at my new body... ............Dr H is no therapist, hand holder, or relaxed in his time management....but for me he was a miracle worker.......I flew four states over and added a lot of $$$ just to use him.........I feel bad that your experience was not a happy one .....remember surgery is a tough emotional experience....I wish you the best and hope your overall results override your current temporary emotional distress....

I'm happy that you are happy with your results.
After all , this is what matters the most :)

That sucks honey!!! Customer service is not what it used to be. I am a nurse and I am sometimes ashamed at how others in my profession behave. I have never met him. I just hate that you had a bad experience. I had a similar experience with a major back surgery and I'm still hopping mad about it 2 years later. Hopefully you will have awesome results at least for all your trouble. Thanks for your honest review. Those of us still shopping for the perfect doctor for our procedure certainly appreciate getting ALL the facts. Keep us posted on your progress. Thinking of you....

Thank you for your nice reply.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience too.
I just wanted to give my honest review, many people are happy with this Dr's office, I wasn't...that just how it is.
He obviously didn't appreciate what I said...oops!
Have a wonderful day!

The beginning of this review is full of personal attacks and I will not comment but would like to address some other points made after. It is true that if you give a deposit for surgery it is not refundable. If you do not plan on going through with the surgery do not leave a deposit. 2 months may seem like a long time but this is around the holidays and those days are already filled. Giving a deposit prevented someone else from getting that time. That being said we would have gladly rescheduled without any penalty whatsoever and did just that. There is nothing "horrendous" about this and there is no reason to "warn" anyone. This is a written policy that everyone receives and the same policy you read and signed prior to giving a deposit. You continue by writing that in your pre op visit you were not treated well but that you "didn't expect a red carpet treatment". The fact is that we treat everybody equally with respect, concern, and a caring attitude. Your comments are about as accurate and honest as the rest of this review which includes your next comment. The pre op visit is meant to answer any questions or concerns the patient may have. When you asked me if I had any questions about the surgery my response was that I was very clear on the surgery plan and that the pre op visit was meant to answer any questions she might have. This was said with a smile and in no way meant to offend anyone and I doubt anyone would have taken offense other than this patient. I know of no other way to make a patient feel comfortable other than to tell them that I am confident in the outcome while answering any questions they might have. The next comment is an outright lie. When we give patients the surgery schedule we tell them in advance when they should be picked up. She knew exactly when someone should have been available to pick them up. Staying longer is not an inconvenience but makes for a worse ride home. There are reasons we do what we do. Nobody should have to be kept in a recovery room for an additional 4 hours. Nobody was being kicked to the curb and we were performing surgery until the early evening that day. Aside from the paper gown everyone is given a warm robe and foot covers. I am sure this fact slipped her mind. I think she was offended that she did not see me in scrubs. Apparently I could not get that right, either. In spite of being told when to be picked her caretaker came much later. At no point do I ever tell patients that surgery is "nothing". In fact our list of instructions tells the patient exactly what they should expect and how to best mange this, including nausea and the drainage associated with liposuction. That evening I did call the patient to see how she was doing. I gave a detailed plan on how to handle the postoperative nausea and at the end asked if there were any other questions. At no point did I ever say anything was abnormal or not to be expected. The lies continue as the next day visit we help everyone with their garments and bandages. Nobody here is ever annoyed. I will go a step further and say that every single employee here loves their job and enjoys caring for patients. The reason for the visit the next day is that in every breast lift I want to be sure there is no hematoma and there is good blood flow to the nipple. This is something that I assessed and made a plan to see the patient during regular office hours. I could not stay and chat because I had a patient already in the operating room. When she made some snide remark I told her that I would be happy to sit and talk but I would have to finish the surgery first if she wanted to wait. She declined. We fitted her for a bra and went over the remainder of the postoperative instructions. I am not sure I understand what she means by a "proper" visit? The visit the next day was meant for me to be sure everything was going well, not for any other reason. Extended visits are on office hour’s days. It is rare to encounter such a patient and I am happy to say that something like this occurs no more than once a year. They feel like nobody cares about them, everyone is too busy for them; nobody treats them like they deserve to be treated, etc. The results from this surgery will be outstanding and I thank you for looking elsewhere for your further surgery. As you can imagine I would never even consider operating or treating you for anything else in the future. Leonard M Hochstein MD

I'm only reading now this answer.
Sorry if my opinion upsets you, but I was really uncomfortable and I'm only posting my experience, last time I checked I was allowed to do that.
I actually received a couple PM from some of your previous clients saying I described exactly their experience.
You can't make everyone happy, and as I said in my review the surgery went well which is the most important thing and I did say the office was impressive, so it's not all bad :)

On another note, I'm dealing with customers in my job too, and if someone criticizes what I do, even if it's upsetting I try to make it constructive and I certainly will never post on a public forum a nasty answer.
I just wanted to tell my story, based on the PM I got, other people are not willing to do the same even though they feel like me.

BTW I didn't have any snide remarks during the short post-op visit, I just asked : "That's all? " when again you didn't even step foot in the room, which is what I would have considered a proper visit.

I'm happy if most people had a good experience...I just didn't.

In any case thanks for reading my review.

The doctor makes a really good point though. The reason they want you out of there so fast is for your own comfort. As long as you still have the anesthesia in your system, the ride home will be much less painful. I'm really glad your surgery turned out so well even though you felt emotionally unsupported. There's no best surgeon out there, just the best one for you. Now that you know you need a lot of attention and coddling from your surgeon, you can seek out a doctor with this personality type for your next procedure. Good luck!

How do have time to be such a wind-bag? You should be more productive with your time & take a class.
November 9, 2015
Dr. Hochstien, wow, what a blow hard. How do you find the time to carry on like this, you need prayers & more classes.
