Gday!

Today I saw a dermatologist and she concluded that its time for me to go back on accutane. (first time was in 2011 with great results). I am 23 and basically I am fed up with acne ruining my confidence so i'm more than happy to go back on it. After my previous course I stayed clear until only 3 or 4 months ago when I was overseas and my skin blew up! I tried a set of chemical peels with no luck so its time to go the medical route. I will be on 10mg daily for the first 2 weeks then 20mg from then on until I am clear. After I'm clear I will stay on a maintenance dose for who knows how long! I look forward to hearing from people who are going through the same journey as me!

A Melbourne buddy! Will be keeping up with your journey mate :) Curious, how long were you on it the first time round, and what dosage? Did you ever miss a pill or anything like that? Cheers!

Hey Evie, Ill keep up with your progress aswell! First time round to be honestly I cannot remember, I'm pretty sure I was on 40-60mg. I was actually really slack with everything (missed a few pills here and there, drank every weekend :/) but i still saw results. Although it did take a long time. Can i just as what moisturiser are you going to use while on accutane? My derm gave me little samples of cetaphil ultra hydrating lotion but I feel like its already given me little blockages. I've done so much reading but I seriously can't come to the conclusion which product is oil free (as I have oily skin) fragrance free and is non-comedogenic. Its so tough to narrow it down. Bloody acne wish I was one of the lucky ones and didn't even need to worry about all this! haha

Oh I know! I wish I were one of the lucky ones too. But I'm sure they have certain things about themselves that they wish they could change ;) Soooo moisturiser, I'm not sure yet. I used ASAP products religiously. I have ridiculously oily skin, so I currently use moisturiser by "simple". But once on roaccutane I'll be using ASAP, either ultimate hydration or moisture daily defence (SPF 30 too!). I purchase this stuff off ry.com.au as it's the best price you can get as it can be quite pricey! My derm office has suggested Hamilton SPF 30+, they have a range specifically for face too. I'll just see how I go. If worse comes to worse, I'll be using redkins sorbeline, as it is amazing.

I feel you my skin is ridiculously oily! I actually have been using the moisture daily defence and it seems to be alright (its so hard to tell what was breaking me out if it was a product as I was chopping and changing all the time trying to find a quick fix). I got it off adore beauty because it was free shipping. Do you like the simple moisturiser? And is it non-comedogenic? Everything seems to clog my pores! When I was getting chemical peels I got heaps of samples of dermalogica active moist as its designed for oily skin, I might have a go with that for a little bit. I also have AVST 1 samples but its got vitamin a in it so i'm not sure if I should use it.

No, the moisturiser i use by Simple isn't oil free :( BUT in saying that, it has no additives like perfumes or colour, and it has some Vit E, and corn starch that helps to mattify your face. I have super combination skin, it never seems to matter if i use moisturiser for dry skin or oily skin, my face gets oily as the day progresses, and this one by Simple (Clear skin, oil balancing moisturiser) seems to be the only one that doesn't make my skin shiny as heck by 2pm! And i'm not left with dry patches or anything. I don't think that it will be enough moisture for when i start roaccutane though. Thats why i will swap to ASAP. The dermo i saw 2 years ago actually promoted ASAP to me - so i figured if a dermo was telling me to use it, then i best use it! Last time i had a facial, i was given heaps of the active moist samples too, and also the mattifier gel by dermalogica. I used both, to no avail. The active moist made my skin feel oily within an hour (which i thought was SOOO odd, but is what it is), and the mattifier stuff did not work, and also had the weirdest consistency. It may work for you, but i didn't have that experience. I wouldnt think that you should use the vit A product while on roaccutane, your skin is already fighting a tough enough battle with the roaccutane and you don't want to strip it or dry it out even more. I think that you just need to keep your face moisturised, and even if you feel your pores are getting clogged, keep with it, because the roaccutane will do its job regardless of your moisturiser. Chances are its all the gunk coming to the surface for your initial break out (yay *rolls eyes*) and not the pores actually clogging.

All going well so far! Haven't been too dry at all and side effects have been minimal. Overall I have been very positive about it all which has helped. I disagree how they say that accutane can cause depression, I reckon it is the complete opposite! If anyone who reads this has a good recommendation for a moisturiser without SPF for night time please let me know!

5 Weeks Done!

luke_12
I am now 5 weeks into my accutane treatment of 20mg a day, and all I can say is wow! My skin feels so much smoother, the majority of my clogged pores have either dried up or have surfaced and are now fading away. I did get a little bit of an initial breakout around the 3 week period but that only lasted a week or so. My confidence is fully back and I have no hesitations in doing all the things I used to love doing. I have been playing a lot of golf and I also work outside, I have managed to not only get a slight tan but I only ever get a little bit pink after a day in the sun. Just make sure you wear sunscreen! I absolutely recommend this drug to anyone struggling with acne issues. Onwards and upwards from here!
