Melasma Almost Cured in One Week- No Laser, No Hydroquinone!

I cannot believe I am posting the before photo because it is the most unflattering and horrifying photo I've ever seen of myself but since I understand the desperation and tears that come with fighting melasma and how important it is to see before and afters for those who have tried everything imaginable like I have, I will put it all out there for all of you. In my before photo I have zero makeup, had been crying, and just woke up. In my after photo (one week later) I have no cover up or foundation on, only light bronzer and highlighter.
Last fall I had the Halo Laser with great results. I did everything in my power to prevent the melasma from returning. I wore hats at the beach and pool and wore/reapplied sunscreen every single day. After 4 nights in Mexico about 2 weeks ago, I was horrified to see that my melasma returned full force despite my best efforts. I wore hats and applied sunscreen every 1-2 hours. That's the bad news. Here is the good news. I spent hours of my life researching medical studies and journals to see what I could do to get rid of my melasma and finally found something that worked for me WITHIN ONE WEEK. And compared to the cost of the laser, it is incredibly cheap. I will say that the laser is amazing to initially remove melasma, but sunscreen is not enough to prevent it from coming back after sun exposure. Combined with the steps I took below, you can choose to combine the laser with these products, or just use the products by themselves and be incredibly diligent about it. To remove my melasma after this recent trip to mexico, I did not use any laser or hydroquinone. The first thing to do is to read up on the effects of Silymarin (Milk Thistle extract) and how beautifully it has cured melasma in double blind studies. Here are two examples. After reading this, I also read about preventing UV damage from the inside, and discovered the benefits of Polypodium Leucotomos.Polypodium leucotomos is a fern from Central America. The underground “runners” (rhizomes) are used for medicine. Polypodium leucotomos is used to prevent certain skin problems including sunburn, eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, vitiligo, and skin cancer. It is also used for other cancers and Alzheimer’s disease.1. I went to whole foods and purchased Milk Thistle (Silymarin) extract in dropper bottles. I got one with low alcohol (they make them with no alcohol) for topical use and one that contained alcohol (higher dose) for internal use.2. I take the full dose (two droppers) of the higher concentrate milk thistle three times a day.Every morning and night after my shower or washing my face, I apply a mix of the low-alcohol Milk thistle and the Be Shiny oil all over my face and let it sit for a few minutes before applying any other oils, lotions or makeup. I do apply my makeup right on top of this.3. Every morning a take one daily capsule of Polypodium Leucotomos 350mg.4. Every morning I apply Rejuvelle Sunscreen For Face SPF 45 before I put any makeup on.I have done this for a straight week and my melasma is almost gone. And I have dermal and epidermal melasma. I have suffered zero side effects. Best of luck to all of you!

good luck! let me know if it works. The other thing that I had ordered in desperation was Transino II from Japan. I havent received it yet but I read that it works when all else fails. Im glad to keep it in my back pocket if I need it.

Thanks for sharing. I was interested in doing PRP + micro needling, when the consultant told me I have melasma, and she wouldn't recommend doing PRP without bleaching agent, because she told me melasma will get worse for some patients after doing PRP. I decide not to do it because I don't want to spend a lot of money, just have my face getting worse, So I google online for more info on melasma, and saw your experience.

I had halo laser done last fall successfully without rebound melasma but it all came back after my trip to Mexico... I’m thinking I have to head from the inside out and the internal and external milk thistle is doing the trick!

Could you please post pictures of the bottle please

Hi I noticed that you are from the Philadelphia area and purchased your products from Whole Foods. My local store doesn’t carry the BShiny. Did you get that product from the local store or from amazon. If you got it in store could you tell me which location. Thank you for your help.
September 15, 2018
Hi! I have no idea where to find it in stores- I found it on amazon.

Hi - just a question of which Milk Thistle is used for topical & which you use for internal? The bottles in your photos show one labeled as "Low Alcohol" and the other "Alcohol Free", but the description of your regimen is a little confusing. I just want to make sure I get the correct items to get started. Glad you had such great results!

Cheryl i also saw your question about the laser and making melasma worse. I had the halo laser done very carefully (2 sessions) by my dermatologist successfully without rebound melasma. Not lasers are bad for melasma. I recently developed rosacea (I’m 34) and am in the process of curing it with ivermectin. I plan to do the halo again in the winter if I have any broken blood vessels.

I’ve had great success with 15% mandelic acid serum and have posted my reviews on it here. Be careful with ivermectin. I also suffer from rosacea and it is a cream designed to eliminate mites that live in everyone’s faces except they trigger an autoimmune response from their bacteria for people with rosacea.. I used this once last month after my doctor recommended it and it was awful. My rosacea bumps had disappeared when I gave up dairy, sugar and stopped taking antibiotics. The red bumps and cystic acne all came back after using ivermectin only once. It’s kills off the mites that live in our face and they die off in 3 weeks making people breakout badly. It may work for you but I had mild rosacea. I had beautiful skin with mandelic acid and it was amazing with melasma and also redness for rosacea. Now after using ivermectin only once, I have red bumps and a couple of cystic acne. I regret using ivermectin cream. Do your research before using it. The cream is very frustrating.

I understand your frustration. I did research extensively and read that the 3rd week will be brutal but wanted to take my chances to fix the demodex issue. The ivermectin does cause a mass die-off that causes a bump outbreak around the 3rd week. I went through that and my entire face looked like I had chicken pox for a week. It was a humbling and awful experience but I knew it was coming so I powered through to the 4th week. My skin is clear and smooth again as if it never happened and I am grateful that the ivermectin wiped out the overpopulation of demodex.

That was meant to say *hot* lasers are bad for melasma.

Milk Thistle- actual products

absorb77
I’ve been getting a lot of requests for the specific brands and type of milk thistle I use, so I deleted the old ones (examples that would work just fine) and have posted photos of the actual products I use. I take the 1000mg Milk Thistle on the left internally 3 times a day- 2 droppers 3x. I rub a few drops of the the low alcohol milk thistle and the Be Shiny oil into my face once in the morning before putting on sunscreen and makeup, and then once at night after my shower before bed. Hope this clears up the confusion!

Is there any down time? Redness? Flaking or anything??? I find everything requires hibernation for days... I’ve tried it all, but never this and if there’s no down time, I’m on it!!
August 13, 2018
No downtime, no flaking! I just put it on and let it sit for a few minutes and applied my lotion and bronzer right over it!
August 14, 2018
Just a quick note, people taken prescription medicine just check that the milk thistle for intake will not interfere with any medication (Milk thistle is marvelous and cleans our liver, but for example with statins is use to lower cholesterol, will interfere) Thank you for the info.

Thank you so much for sharing! I’ve dealing with the issue for over 10 years. Lasers, creams, peelings and nothing has ever worked for me after spending thousands I will definitely try all these

Could you clarify something? When you say two droppers, do you mean an entire dropper full? The dose on the bottle says one drop and that it’s good for 30 days.
August 20, 2018
Hi! You must have different product. I don’t have it in front of me, but the dose on the bottle has many drops that equals to about two droppers full. It also says to take it two to three times a day which makes it go pretty quickly.
