Beware of This "Low-risk" Procedure. Massachusetts, MA

I started noticing lines above my lip and was hoping to have them softened a bit. Restylane Silk was recommended as an easy solution with little down time. The injector placed a bit of the product above my upper lip. The product obstructed blood flow and caused tissue necrosis and extreme pain both on the lip and inside my mouth. It is a horribly disfiguring wound. Had I known this was a possibility I would have never undertaken the risk.

I am sorry this has happened to you. Has the surgeon offered to fix the damage?

The injector was an RN but now being treated by her plastic surgeon. The problem is that the wound healing is a long, slow process so no telling yet what the ultimate damage will be and how it should be addressed.

I'm not sure where in Massachusetts you live, that there is a WONDERFUL dermatology group in Chestnut Hill called Skincare Physicians. I used to see Dr. Michael Kaminer. He's an excellent dermatologist (and cosmetic dermatologist). He'll always be honest with you, and that whole practice group there are excellent and leaders in not only cosmetic dermatology (including lasers) but clinical and medical dermatology as well. If you don't get resolve, I highly recommend getting over to Chestnut Hill to meet one of the doctors there. They're known as the "Dermatologists to the dermatologists". I hope your recovery has moved along and you are doing well.

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear that! I got one cc of Restylane Silk injected into my upper and lower lips in Massachusetts (I wonder if we went to the same place) because I wanted fuller lips. A little clear ball developes in my mouth and I was told it was a mucocele after I used Abreva and gargled salt water for ten days after visiting the RN who gave me the treatment (it ruled out cold sore and canker). It'd still there now. The RN who did it won't tell me that the injection could have damaged the salvia gland causing it to be blocked causing the mucocele, she told me instead that it was just a coincidence and happened at the same time (maybe she just doesn't want to freak me out cause she knows I want more fillers?). I heard about necrosis from the RN but wow these pictures don't make it look like a low risk procedure. I hope your healing is going well. Keep us updated.

Hope that clears up soon. I'm guessing yours was more than a coincidence, since mucoceles seem to be caused by trauma (biting, piercing, etc.). There is a lot going on under the skin - glands, vessels, etc. It seems the injections are not quite as innocuous as they are marketed to be.

Thanks.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with that. I hope you have a good recovery and you should definitely seek a consult with another plastic surgeon not affiliated with where you had the injections done. I once had my lips improperly injected by a nurse (right in the corners) and developed horrible angular cheilitis (sores the size of quarters) and had to see a few doc goes before a dermatologist was able to clear it it with a steroid cream. It took a few months for it to resolve. Needless to say I never had her inject again and get great results and a different place. This is nothing compared to what has happened to you and you should seek legal action. At a minimum, they should cover all future medical costs. You should also demand to go to the best plastic surgeon in Boston so it will heal right and not leave scars. Would you mind naming the location and nurse? I'm also in MA and would like to avoid them. Again, so sorry this happened to you.

Fortunately, the open wound has healed but has left me with a deformed lip. Nothing can be done until more healing takes place.

Wow, I have been trying to find a doctor who did the silk, thanks for sharing. Guess I will hold off.

Well you are lucky it healed! It looks to me like you may have been infected with something in that office that did the injection. Either way there is always a risk :(

The filler was injected into a blood vessel, which cut off the blood supply to the tissue resulting in the death of the tissue.
March 12, 2016
Are you able to say where it was done at? I am also from mass and want to avoid this place
March 2, 2016
Wow, very scary. I've never had lips injected but have had fillers for the past 8 years or so. This is one of the risks that is always on the patient consent form. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be a common occurrence but it's a good reminder to us all that this is always a risk, even with an experienced injector. I hope that the clinic is able to provide you with support and guidance about repairing this. Good luck.

You have beautiful shaped lips and a gorgeous natural color. You will heal...always have injections done by your dermatologist or plastic surgeon! Nurses and assistants are not qualified. Would you allow a nurse to perform an appendectomy? Good luck!

I'm thinking maybe a fat transplant might be better.

The healing has been tremendous. How long after healing did they say they will discuss your options?
March 2, 2016
It all depends on how long it takes for the all of the scarring to soften up. I am massaging the scarred tissue to help it along.
March 2, 2016
Wish I held off. The issue that I was concerned about was so much better than what I have now.
March 13, 2016
so sorry. I hope it gets better for you. I just had a bad result from a filler and am totally depressed, don't want to see or talk to anyone.

I, too have been a recluse (for an entirely different procedure. Unfortunately, there are good results and bad results. And when you're left with bad results...it can and is devastating.

Thank you for warning people about this serious risk from cosmetic fillers.
