This is Always How I Was Meant to Be
I am a non-binary person who had chest masculinizing top surgery with Dr. Blechman. Dr Blechman and his team have a great system in place to ensure that I had the exact amount of attention that I required. The entire staff (both administrative and medical) are responsive to all questions no matter how small you may feel they are and are VERY clear and helpful about the process every step of the way both in the months/weeks leading up to the surgery and after. Everyone is kind, compassionate and thorough including Dr. Blechman whose confidence made me feel I was in good hands.
Scheduling a consultation and surgery with him was easy. At another popular practice in Manhattan, I had to wait two months to schedule a consultation and at the time of consultation they were scheduling surgeries a year out (this may vary of course). Because I'm freelance and i don't have a consistently predictable work schedule, the fact that i could have a surgery date that wasn't extremely far out from my scheduling date was very important to me and made work life more manageable.
As far as post surgery recovery and results go, I'm extremely happy! Dr. Blechman doesn't use drains and while I don't know what it's like to have drains I do know that not having to deal with them was a welcome feature of my recovery. I'm amazed at the beautiful work he has done and how fast my recovery (2.5 weeks post right now) has been and continues to be. The one draw back is that he is out of network to my insurance so I was more out of pocket (though not as much as one thinks) than I would have been with the other practice so if finances are difficult and you can afford to wait you'll have to give this some thought. But, to me, it has been a small price to pay for all the above reasons and for finally being able to feel bodily-aligned with my natural self. I will say that integration is still an on-going thing for me. It doesn't happen overnight especially for me as an older patient who's lived in my original body for decades and who did not grow up at a time or in a culture where top surgery was an option. I can't emphasize enough how beautiful Dr. Blechman's work is. My chest looks very natural to me -- and as I continue to integrate my new body into my whole being, I can envision a very near future where I'll look at myself and know this is always how I was meant to be.
