35 Years Old, Told I Have a "Runner's Face" (Very Thin, Drawn Face with Volume-loss) - Martinsville, NJ

ORIGINAL POST

SLG
WORTH IT$1,850
I have been doing Bikram yoga for 18 months not and recently stopped eating all wheat products. I only lost about 5-7 pounds, but the first place everyone commented on my weight loss was my face. My facial appearance has been bothering me for a while and I saw an ad in a magazine for Voluma a few months ago. I had a a few appointments booked but kept chickening out and I finally did it yesterday. The doctor said she starts out with just 1 vial 0.5 ml in each cheek) and sees me in 2 weeks to see if I need more. The injections hurt but it wasn't all too bad. The doctor injected me and quickly masaged my cheeks in an upward motion. I was given an ice pack. What worries me is that I wasn't even given a mirror to see what I looked like after the injections. I am not sure about the results so far. Yesterday immediately after the procedure my cheekbones looked very pronounced making my face look even more thin and drawn. When the lidocaine wore off, my face was very, very sore. I couldn't talk or smile. I had a terrible headache too. I tried to sleep on my back last night but I am not sure if I did or not. This morning my cheeks look uneven and are still sore, but only when I smile. I take Tylenol and the pain subsides. My husband hasn't noticed anything or asked anything. When I was doing my make-up this morning I actually forgot I had the Voluma done. I hope I see more results somehow in the next few days and didn't just throw away $1,000. :(

She spent a few minutes with me during my consultation - asked me what I was unhappy with and discussed my options. She seemed very skilled when performing the injections but didn't even give me a mirror to show me or discuss the results (which are supposed to be immediate with Voluma).

Hi, how are things now? did you get more injected? I am 43 and I too have a thin face and when I'm not smiling I look worn out (IMO). I initally had 2 ccs and then went back for another cc and then ended up having a total of 4 cc, so it took 2 cc in each cheek to finally get a good "apple cheek" result. My surgeonin cincinnati is great and yes he always gives a mirror before you get up from the chair. you may want to go elsewhere.

IMO, starting slow is the way to go. Occasionally it will swell and be more than you expect. Although a mirror is nice, it wouldn't be necessary at 1 really. It's a base and you KNEW when you started you would probably need another. Ask the the mirror at 2.

Hi there, I don't think 1 syringe makes a difference in an area as large as a cheek. Think about it--- 5ml= 1 teaspoon. The next time you cook something and measure out a teaspoon, you'll see how small this is...and you are getting roughly only 1/5 of this amount, then halved in each cheek. Yes, I know they say that water then binds to the filler--so it technically becomes "more", but, I don't think 1 cc is very much, regardless. I probably have about 3 syringes in each cheek-- some on the cheek bone and some underneath the cheek bone, where hollowness occurs. I actually still need more to fully correct the hollows, but finances will not allow that right now. I think starting slow is a good idea because if you over-inject, then you waste money if it ends up being dissolved. Unless the doctor is giving you a discount on the multiple syringes at once, there probably isn't any rush to do too much off the bat.

If you're a person who has high cheekbones and fine thin skin it's amazing how quickly that product spreads out - as you said three syringes makes it sort of just right for some of us but some of us may still need a little more. DO NOT be shy or embarrassed about your request/needs. You know what is necessary and you are the person paying. NEVER compare yourself to other people - just because someone else had one or two syringes doesn't mean that's the right thing for you. YOU know what's right for yourself.

Thanks for sharing! I actually think it looks good, very natural. I have a thin face and am thinking about trying it out as well. The girl I go to for botox also suggested half in each side to start with.

Hi, now that you are about 6 months out can you tell any difference? I agree with some of the other ladies, 2cc in the cheeks just isn't enough to make a noticeable difference. I don't know why they make it so expensive.

One more syringe of Voluma 2 weeks after the first syringe

SLG
So I had one more syringe injected for a total of 2 syringes (2cc total). It was very pricey but if it really lasts 2 years it's worth it. I have been getting comments that I don't look so "drawn" and cheeks look fuller but no one knows my "secret". ;) I am happy with the results and recommend Voluma.

I agree with NYCLiz that 1-2 syringes in a large area such as the cheeks will be barely noticible. Like Liz, I also have about 3 syringes on each side of my face. Voluma, however, unlike Juvederm or the other HA fillers is NOT hydrophilic or water binding...meaning it doesn't increase fullness by pulling water to it. The day of the treatment is the fullest you will look with it. I'm in the medical esthetic field and I haven't been hearing good things about Voluma which is sad because we all had high hopes and alot of us (like me) have invested alot of money in trying it. Its not lasting as long as expected, and does not produce the fullness of fillers like Radiesse. In addition the look of it isn't as visually pleasing as other fillers. It seems to add fullness, but not definition in the face. I feel like its taken away some of my natural facial contours and I will not be getting any more of it. When I need more, I will be returning to Radiesse and Juvederm Ultra Plus. I've seen doctors locally now selling Voluma at two syringes for $1000 (they were originally charging from $750-$900 for one syringe) so that shows a decline in sales or desire for it in the market. If you are happy, that's fantastic...but when it wears off you may want to consider Radiesse to get the look you want for your cheeks.

I agree 100% with you. Your voluma analysis us dead on. How long ago were you injected? I am nine months out, much is gone, but it has left some of that strange facial shape. Fortunately, it's not as noticeable anymore.

I had really high hopes for Voluma as well. I have been doing the fillers Juvederm and botox for three years now. I was so excited to try Voluma! I think I had three tubes in each cheek and spent a total of5000$ in Feb. and in May,and my body has absorbed almost all of the product already, one could hardly tell there was any treatment. I have a very narrow skiny face. And on top of that I developed really bad acne from the Voluma!!!!!!!!!!! So sad.I'm looking into possibly getting implants, for my cheekbones, but I'm seeing there are mixed reveiws. But I'm So tiered of waising money down the drain for the facial fillers.

Thank you all for this input we all need it !

Ooops didn't see this before my first post. Very nice and again natural. Did you have any bruising?
May 31, 2015
Nope, no bruising at all. Very tender for about 2-3 weeks though.

I love voluma also :)

I too agree, Voluma didn't give me nice apple cheeks for long. Not for the price anyway. I'm going to research Radiesse. Kitters, what is the difference between the two?
September 12, 2015
Voluma is crosslinked hyaluronic acid while Radiesse is calcium spheres in a gel delivery system. Voluma is easily metabolized by the body but therein lies its safety because I can be dissolved with hyaluronadaise if it needs to be . With Radiesse the carrier gel absorbs but the calcium spheres do not (initially) . They enhance natural collagen production in your skin - but by the same token cannot be removed with an enzyme so are considered semi permanent . I prefer Radiesse because of its sharper finish in the face I feel it is more natural looking than Voluma which tends to make people look pillowy and puffy .
September 12, 2015
Agreed, radiesse looks like natural beautiful high cheekbones.
Voluma is just odd looking and unnatural. On my 2nd year and it's finally looking normal. Will go back to radiesse.

I didn't have luck with voluma- it literally was depleted within 3 months:( I'm a runner, and tend to look petty lean... everywhere. I recently tried Radiesse and I love it. I got one vial to start with about 4 months ago. I can tell at least half is still there. Pretty happy and if I remember, less expensive:) I'm going back in Nov for more.

Radiesse is sold in syringes not vials - as far as I know the only product sold by the vial is Sculptra. Radiesse is my favorite filler for the midface also.

I stand correctedâ˜șit was Radiesse that I had injected. I researched it prior to and it seemed to be the safest route to take, and biggest bang for the buck. How long does yours last? Have you ever had the hollows of your eyes injected?
September 13, 2015
Radiesse isn't considered the safest because it can't be removed once it's been injected, that's really the reason Voluma is so popular - because it provides similar volumizing while having the safety of being removable. I struggle with that each time I have it injected - that little fear that "this time" I will have a problem that can't be fixed. Needless to say I choose my injectors with caution!!!
I have never had my tear troughs injected- that is the area under the eye where most complain of darkness or bags. The filler of choice for that area is Belotero or Juvederm Ultra, the less dense smaller molecule fillers which are designed to be used closer to the skin surface . Radiesse would be a very risky choice for that area.

actually juvaderm is not recommended under the eye resylane is. juvaderm attracts too much water that can give you puffiness.
