Men Should Be Very Selective About Their Plastic Surgeons: I Should Have Been

After losing 150lbs( I'm 6'1, 330>180) with the assistance of a VSG operation in June 2016, I was in need of a circumferential tummy tuck and a breast lift/gynecomastia procedure. My VSG procedure was in Tijuana(Dr. Sergio Quinones) and I had a great experience, so I had no reservations about seeking plastic surgery in Mexico(especially being that I could not afford the needed procedures here in the US). I received several quotes from different clinics, but ultimately decided on CER Hospital and Dr. Luis Suarez.

Dr. Suarez had good reviews, the pricing was fair, and his staffs communication was excellent so I felt confident in my choice. Unfortunately as a man seeking cosmetic surgery you will find it is difficult to find a surgeon that has 'Before and After' pictures of other male patient results. I understand that far less men than women undergo plastic surgery, so I expected the lack of male photos and being that CER Hospital advertises 'Male Procedures' specifically on their site, I expected that they were experienced.

My initial operation in July 2018 is where things went wrong. I told my coordinator and Dr. Suarez multiple times that I was not concerned about avoiding scarring on my chest(I planned to get tattoos later to cover obvious incisions) but that I just wanted a masculine, defined shape. Dr. Suarez agreed to perform a traditional bilateral mastectomy, to remove the excess tissue below my chest and relocate my nipples, which I knew from my extensive research would give me a result that I was looking for.

AFTER I was placed under anesthesia, Dr. Suarez changed the plan and performed a periareolar lift. This procedure not only did not give me the pectoral definition I was asking for, but it created tension 360 degrees around my areola, leaving me with a very large, feminine 40mm areola. This outcome was essentially my worst nightmare. I had always had a very full chest while I was obese and having a normal looking, masculine chest was of extreme importance to me.

I was asked to allow time for healing, but within a couple months it was clear that the results were not there. I had very large low-sitting areolas, and there was a significant amount of fat remaining on my lower chest. The Doctor agreed to perform a revision, covering most of the costs, in March of this year(2019).

I requested that the doctor perform a vertical lollipop incision this time, in hopes that it would relieve some tension around the areolas and improve the definition of my lower chest. While it did improve my pectoral definition, ultimately the diameter of my areola are unchanged at roughly 40mm, very very large for a male. I also have minor dog ears beneath my new vertical incisions, but they're the least of my concerns.

I have since recently contacted Dr. Suarez's office and have been told there is nothing else he can do, and that I should contact another surgeon.

If you are a male seeking plastic surgery in Mexico, please do some research and ask for past patient photos of other male patients. I do not believe that all surgeons have the technique and experience necessary for male breast/chest procedures, and I could not recommend Dr. Luis Suarez at CER Hospital. The fact that he completely deviated from our discussed surgical plan without consent should be enough to make any new patient cautious.
