My experience with Dr. Basner was a major...
My experience with Dr. Basner was a major disappointment. I paid CASH for a tummy tuck with inner thigh and back liposuction. I had to be hospitalized within a few days of the surgery. I was hospitalized due to a catheter injury. The post surgery catheter caused a significant tear and made it excruciatingly painful to use the bathroom. I called Dr. Basner on his cell phone after discovering using the bathroom was unbearable. Dr. Basner was not happy about me calling him on his cell phone.
After about a week of Dr. Basner not being able to figure out how to treat the problem I took the initiative to call my gynecologist because Dr. Basner was lax and non chalant about my condition. Dr. Basner simply wanted to mask my problem by prescribing more pain medication as opposed to actually investigating and be patient with finding a treatment that would make it easier for me to use the bathroom.
My gynecologist recognized how serious my condition was and immediately admitted me to the hospital. The next morning, Dr. Basner called my hospital room and said the most insensitive thing, "I am angry with you". This was mind blowing on many levels. I was devastated by Dr. Basner's call. I was in tremendous discomfort and he literally called with the primary purpose to let me know he was angry with me. I worked with MedStar Pediatrics for nearly a decade and I have NEVER heard of a single physician speaking to a patient like Dr. Basner spoke to me. It turns out he was upset because the GBMC medical team scrutinized him performing an elective surgery with my post op records reflecting my hematocrit was dangerously low. I was initially admitted because of the catheter tear but my dangerously low hematocrit labs warranted a request for my post op and surgery file.
During my hospital stay, Dr. Basner never came to check on me. I feel it is important to clarify that I was admitted to GBMC minutes from his office. The entire medical team tactfully mentioned how unusual it was for the surgeon to disregard a patient admission and allow a gynecologist to oversee my hospital stay. The concensus was no physician should have ever performed an elective surgery on me with a critically low hematocrit. Even my gynecologist scrutinized the matter. My gynecologist also repeatedly told me that my surgeon should be involved in my hospital admission considering my treatment was related to the surgery. My gynecologist provided extraordinary support in the absence and disgruntled non chalant attitude that Dr. Basner showed.
Another disappointment I experienced was the outcone of my surgery. During the consult, I expressed how important it was to have my stretch marks removed. Dr. Basner advised that he would not be able to remove them completely. He agreed on a safer alternative solution, removing my stretch marks above my bellybutton. He assured me it would be completely safe to remove the stretch marks above my bellybutton. He even drew a line on my stomach to illustrate how much skin he would remove. The line he drew gave the impression that my stretch marks would be minimal and just barely above my bikini line. I also asked about upper thigh fat removal so my thighs would no longer rub together. Dr. Basner sets the expectation for a Barbie Doll bikini body. Not only did Dr. Basner over sell himself and under deliver with this procedure, his entire attitude changed after I paid in full.
During my follow up visits, I touched on how my stretch marks are still above my bellybutton; my thighs are still rubbing together; barely no back fat was removed and one side of my abdomen scar was unsightly compared to the other side. Dr. Basner insisted it was swelling and told me to give it a chance to heal. He told me if it did not heal properly, he would do correction surgery (another lie).
I also had a drain hose infection and had to receive follow up treatment with the wound care center. During my first surgery follow up appointmrnt, Dr. Basner asked his medical assistant to schedule my drain hose removal appointment. She told me she would call me in a few days with a date. Several days went by in addition to my five day hospital admission. During my hospital stay, the medical team did a good job cleaning and changing my wound and bandages. There was absolutely no follow up with Dr. Basner's office. After my hospital discharge, I went to clean and change my drain hose bandages. I was shocked to see it was full of white pus (I have a lot of photos of the drain hose infection). I called Dr. Basner's office yet again. His assistant called me back and left a voicemail where she was profusely apologetic about forgetting to follow-up with me (I saved the message because she acknowledged her oversight in the voicemail) . By the time I received the message, I had already removed my own drain hoses because I was scared of the infection spreading. I had to receive weeks of treatment at the wound care center and have the infection cut out of the drain hose site. To this day, my scar is very dark and looks horrible.
I went back to my next follow up appointments with Dr. Basner. He agreed that my thighs were still rubbing together. He even acknowledged my stretch marks could have been done better. I asked Dr. Basner about his promise to do surgical correction. His proposed resolution was for me to pay for another tummy tuck surgery and liposuction. He offered a five percent discount. My husband was present and tried to remind Dr. Basner of his initial promise to make surgical revisions once the swelling goes down and if the results are unsatisfactory. Dr. Basner told us he had another appointment and to give him a moment to walk to the next room and finish up with his other appointment. We waited about 45 minutes then asked the front desk how much longer. We were told Dr. Basner left for the day. Both my husband and I was upset about the reoccurring disingenuous theme. The staff offered to call Dr. Basner on his cell phone. His assistant Ray, came back to the room and advised Dr. Basner wants to terminate further treatment with me. I was nearly in tears because of how he left me in the exam room in a gown and set the expectation that he would return as soon as he wrapped up his other appointment.. Ray was nasty and abraisive when she advised that Dr. Basner wants to terminate further treatment with me. She told me to get dressed and leave. I got dressed and asked to speak to the practice manager. When I went to the front desk, the staff was rude. They asked me whether or not I realized I was there for nearly two hours. I politely went through my time frame. Upon arrival, it took about 20 minutes to be seen. Once assigned to a room, I had to wait nearly 15 minutes before Dr. Basner came in. Dr. Basner spent about ten minutes talking to me. He then left me sitting in the room for 45 minutes before I discovered he had already left. The staff did not seem to care about the time line. The staff told me to leave or they would call the police. I was crushed by the extreme behavior. I began discreetly recording the incident because I was completely calm and Ray was screaming about me being there for nearly two hours. I remained calm in my exit but continued to record the staff belligerence. As I walked to my vehicle and was about to pull off, the police arrived. The officer shared his concern about how the staff acknowledged both my husband and I was completely calm throughout the incident. I showed the officer the video and shared the manner in which Dr. Basner led me to believe he would return to the exam room to complete my visit. The officer gave me his badge number and told me the staff seemed to be taking an extreme approach to addressing my concerns. The officer told me he would be upset as well under the circumstances. The officer shared how he felt the call was a waste of their time.
It has been awhile since my surgery and I am still genuinely crushed about this experience! Every time I want to put on a swimsuit, it hurts to know I went through nearly two months of a painful recovery, hospital admission and wound care treatment yet, my stretch marks are barely changed since the surgery. Dr. Basner has shown zero accountability and remorse. He acts like the victim when I try to discuss this with him. Considering Dr. Basner and his team has blown me off about my valid concerns, I am going to share my experience with the BPQA, BBB and every review site as well as post a YouTube video of the being belligerent and the pictures of my drain hose infection. I firmly believe it is unreasonable for Dr. Basner to twist my grief into somehow he is the victim! I also understand why he trains his staff to offer a discount for cash transactions. This was a horrible experience and I remain emotionally torn about how I was treated! I will not stop sharing my experience until Dr. Basner is held accountable for the misery he put me through!
