I have always taken care of my teeth. I wore...

I have always taken care of my teeth. I wore braces for 5 years as a child, I have flossed faithfully, brushed my teeth at least twice every day and I have never once gone to bed without brushing my teeth. Imagine my surprise when I bit down on a red hot fire ball 35 years ago and cracked 2 teeth. That cost me a bridge. Things went along pretty well for a few years and then came root canals. A few years later I had several crowns, then my teeth started becoming loose. Both of my parents had bad teeth and wore dentures.
Things continued to deteriorate over the years. 3 years ago my dentist told me that I was going to lose all of my teeth and that I was going to need dentures or implants. I went to Dr. Wayland at Renew Beyond Dentistry for a second opinion. He did a complete workup and made 2 plans for me – one for implants and one for dentures. I could stand the thought of getting dentures and when he told me the cost of implants I decided that I would put it off awhile – as long as I could. In February of this year my time ran out! One of my front teeth got so loose that I was afraid every time I sat down to eat that the tooth would fall out. I babied it by eating on the other side. I had Xrays and & a CT scan and saw the films myself - there was nothing holding that tooth in my head – very little root & very little bone.
I knew I could not wait any longer so I took a trip back to Dr. Wayland. He gave me a plan and it was rather scary and shocking. I needed implants, bone grafting, alveoloplasty, possible sinus lifts for a total of around $100,000. This plan consisted a series of groups & each group would be done at a different time over the next 6-12 months. Payment for each group would be due at the time it was preformed so that allowed me to plan instead paying it all at once.
A week & a half ago on April 10, 2018, I had the first group (surgery) done which was a 3-day protocol. Here are the details of that surgery:
• All 10 lower teeth extraction
• Alveoloplasty - smooths & reshapes jawbone where teeth extracted or lost
• Bone grafting
• 6 Implants on lower teeth – 20, 22, 23, 25, 27, 29 (Will be without lower teeth until Wed 4/12)
• One Provisional Hybrid Prosthesis for the lower arch
• Extract 6 upper teeth – 04, 07, 08, 09, 10 & 13 (Leaving only the 2 canines 11 & 06 for now)
• Abutments connects implants to replacement teeth
• Provisional Crowns – a temporary bridge for upper teeth
? Back to office on 4/11 for lower prosthesis fitting
? Back to office 4/12 to 13 to get the lower prosthesis attached
The surgery lasted 8 hours. I was nasally intubated and under general anesthesia (Propofol).
I do not remember much about that day. I was in the dental chair talking to Dr. Wayland & the Anesthesiologist.
The Propofol was started and I was told that I would feel drowsy. I counted 1 – 2 – 3 and the next thing I knew I was in a wheelchair and helped in the car. It is still astonishing to me, after all of that work I had NO PAIN at all except a sore throat from the tube in my throat. I have had one pain pill in the last 11 days – one Hydrocodone the night of surgery and I took it ONLY because my throat was so sore I did not think I could sleep. I slept the entire night. I had absolutely no swelling and no bruising. I could have gone back to work once the temporary prosthesis was inserted on Thursday but I decided to wait until Monday to return.
When I went back to work on Monday no one could believe how great the temporary bridge on the top and the temporary prosthesis on the bottom looked. It is truly amazing! To say that I am happy with my decision is a complete understatement.
I am unable to chew because I have to allow the gums to heal and implants to set. I thought I would have difficulty with this but I have gotten very creative fixing appetizing soft foods, soups & protein shakes. I did loose a couple pounds those first couple days but am back to my original weight of 120 and holding my own.
I will see Dr. Wayland this coming Tuesday (2 weeks postop). The original plan was to allow 8-12 weeks for healing before the 2nd surgery. My hope is that this will be speeded up a bit. I will continue to enter updates as I go thru this process.
