Reviews you can trust, from real people like you.
How it works
  • Our highly-trained Review Moderation team evaluates all reviews before they're published to ensure they're written by people like you and not a member of a doctor's office.
  • This multi-step process takes up to 24 hours from review submission to publication.
  • Doctors can't pay to have reviews removed or hidden.
  • Reviews are only removed at the reviewer's request or if they violate our Terms of Service.

If you have questions or believe we should re-evaluate a published review, let us know.

N.b.: please note the following review/s are my own thoughts and opinions only and I'm writing this review as it helped me to read what other realself members had been though.
I had sun damage and had spent 18 years of my life smoking around 10 cigarettes a day (aged 15 till 33) haven't smoked for 5 years. To my credit I've have always done cardio, mainly cycling, and eaten healthily, been a low to normal weight etc. but the effects of the above and just the normal ageing process resulted in my losing what I would consider to be ALOT of volume. I think in all honesty I just looked my age, but being attached to the idea of being 'pretty', as I had been for a large part of my life and having big problems letting go of that part of myself as I know I 'should' do, I was NOT happy with the way I looked and wanted to do something drastic about it. The way I looked was affecting my life to the point where I would sometimes avoid going out, avoid social situations and constantly think about how old and tired I looked, ie, I would say it made me feel depressed and really felt I HAD to find a solution. I previously had 1ml of Juvederm in my cheeks, done by Dr. Stevenson at the Epsom Skin Clinic (if you are SE UK, please don't there, they are awful and have NO knowledge of facial anatomy or real experience, just slick marketing and a desire to make money out of women's insecurities).
I have researched for the last 1-2 years using real self as a resource and also had a number of consultations with Dr.s in Harley Street (I live near London). I spoke to Dr. Julian Da Silva, Dr. Roger Amar and 4 Others about Fat Transfer but having looked at their websites and meeting them in person I decided they could not provide me with enough if any evidence (before and after photos and testimonials) that they could give me the results I wanted. This and the exchange rate got me thinking a trip to a U.S. Dr. Would be best. I knew I was going to get a fat transfer and wanted the best person to do it. I contacted Samuel Lam MD, had a consult via Skype and he said I didn't need the transfer at that time, and then looked at Dr. Motykie's website and real self reviews and decided he would be able to help me. I am only 7 days post op writing this and at the moment my face is still swollen and somewhat bruised so I don't have the final results in yet, I believe it takes around 3 months to see results without any inflammation and at least 6 months, according to the Dr., to see how much fat will be retained, but I wanted to get this review started and will continue to add to it over the next few months. I'm actually scared and worried at the moment as I look fake, done and very puffy, but I know I need to be patient and that surgery is always a gamble and never an instant fix and it's essential to be patient and make sure you do the aftercare as advised. It's hard though. So far I have been taking ibuprofen and cod liver oil to try and reduce inflammation (this after the shot and one weeks supply of steroids to inhibit the immune response, both given to me by Dr. M). I also need to exercise but was told not to do anything fat burning until after two weeks post op. The other thing that bothers me is the lip lift, I did want to shorten and have lost around 5mm from my mid upper lip (although the corners at still at the same point) but as a result I have got much larger and flared nostrils (!) due I think to the skin being pulled down..? I have a phone consult with Dr. Motykie on Friday and as I'm now back in the UK, will email him photos to express my concerns as he doesn't do face time / Skype consults. Will update soon.

Dr. Motykie and his staff were all wonderful and I felt very cared for as an individual. They helped me arrange blood tests and medical in the U.S. at short notice (costs a lot less than doing those in the UK) and I didn't have to ask for anything, all the info I needed was given to me at the right time. awaiting post op consult and feedback. Will continue to review in coming weeks / months, but think Dr. Motykie is an excellent surgeon and very glad I was able to go to him.
