Consultation review - I felt quite rushed
ORIGINAL POST
Negative Experience
I booked a consultation with Dr Riaz for liposuction of the abdomen. I am a UK Size 8, in my 30s, and have no loose skin, I have had no children and have always maintained the same weight. I just have a problem area on my lower abdomen where genetically I have always held my weight. No one else would notice but I am personally, self-conscious about it...
I went to see Dr Riaz who after assessing me said that I needed a full tummy tuck and 360 liposuction which would come in at £17,000 or I would be unhappy with my results. This seemed perplexing to me as I know that a tummy tuck is a very significant surgery and way more high-risk than liposuction alone, with much more permanent scarring across the abdomen, and I do not have a lot of excess weight or any loose skin.
Apart from that, I felt quite rushed through my consultation (it had actually been double booked, but as I was in first he honored my appointment above the other clients). He talked a lot about his reviews and ratings on Real Self, and I definitely felt I was talking to a salesman first and a doctor second. There was a back and forth about price and payment structure and he offered me a potential deal on the price, or on payment installations which was all pretty convoluted, and not in line with a professional surgery.
I felt very uneasy about the consultation so went to see another doctor who specializes exclusively in liposuction. He was very unfazed about the area I wanted to treat, sat with me at length, and said that I should have no issues at all in regard to skin laxity with liposuction alone and that it should be quite a straightforward procedure with only a week or two of downtime. There was no pressure to add other areas and he did not try to upsell me on anything in any way.
Liposuction on its own is obviously much less invasive and with a much reduced complication potential than a full-on tummy tuck which is a very involved surgery, with significantly more scarring.
I am convinced that I do not need a tummy tuck or full 360 lipo and did not go in seeking that. I am now paying just under £5000 for my liposuction surgery (two areas) which has been booked with a practitioner that I feel is truly empathetic and trustworthy. There has been a full and very transparent pricing structure and breakdown sent to me, and his reception team is diligent and professional. Dr Riaz did not have any administrative team behind him which I also find a little disconcerting.
I personally feel that if I had gone with Dr Riaz I would have been charged thousands of pounds extra, to undergo surgery that I physically did not need, and ended up with very significant scarring for the rest of my life... let alone opening myself up to the risks of such a significant surgery.
I never normally write negative reviews but I felt quite compelled to this time as the repercussions could have been so drastic and I hate to think of anyone else going through that. My intuition just tells me that my consultation was much more about profit than what was actually best for me. Dr Riaz may actually be a great surgeon for anyone who does undergo a tummy tuck or mummy makeover with him, but I was certainly left questioning whether his bottom line is more important to him than his patient's overall well-being.
