Consultation review: judgemental vibes
ORIGINAL POST
Horrific Consult Experience, Judgemental Vibes.
To be clear, my issue is not with the surgeons or medical staff in this practice. I only went in for a consultation, the basis for my review.
I debated whether to leave this, but the experience left me feeling so terrible I wouldn't want anyone else to feel the same way.
SUMMARY: Beautiful office, knowledgeable and friendly surgeon, but a horribly rushed, judgmental, uncaring, "you should be thankful we're even letting you in here" vibe from the staff and entire experience (especially the patient coordinator) that left me feeling terrible. Body image and "not good enough for this place" wise.
BACKGROUND: I went in for a liposculpture consult following weight loss. I found this practice through Instagram and was impressed with the results.
THE OFFICE: The office itself is beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. The front desk staff were friendly, although I heard them having conversations with a patient on the phone financing at the front desk - which I was well within earshot of. I can imagine he/she wouldn't have wanted that conversation to be audible to others.
PUNCTUALITY: After they ran about 10-15 minutes behind I was offered a small bottle of room temperature, generic-brand water. Not a big deal, doctors run late. But it certainly didn't make a good impression.
CONSULT EXPERIENCE: For many people, myself included, losing weight and showing your body to people after weight loss is a very personal and intimidating experience. This is where this practice ultimately lost me - and what prompted me to write this review.
SURGEON: The surgeon I consulted with (avoiding naming which to keep myself confidential) was friendly and I found him to be knowledgeable, thorough in his consult and courteous; although he seemed a bit rushed.
PATIENT COORDINATOR: I then waited around 10 minutes in the exam room, where I was met by Becca, the patient coordinator. She walked in and towered over me (she didn't appear to have an office/desk of her own, or if she did, I wasn't invited to speak with her there) and hurriedly presented me a quote for $50K+ on a piece of paper with a flimsy business card pinned to it. Not even in a document folder.
That hardly seems elevated, appropriate for a quote at that price point, of that they cared about me or my business.
Knowing nothing about me, my career or financial status, she then immediately started talking to me about financing. I honestly don't even remember if she shook my hand or not.
I can't remember if she stood up or leaned on the side cabinets, but the whole thing just left me with a terrible feeling.
She also said she'd follow up on a few things via text message, but didn't. I wasn't even walked out, but was told "the girls at the front will take care of you".
FINAL THOUGHTS: This is only my personal experience, how I interpreted things, and it is valid. Perhaps I caught the team on an off day.
The defensive, snobby tone in which this business seems to respond to their past negative reviews only underscores that the judgmental vibe I got is indeed accurate.
Perhaps if I was a well connected NYC influencer or socialite of leisure, I would have been treated better by the office staff. But alas I'm just a humble, full-time employed professional that works to earn my living and travelled for my consult from out of town.
