My Upper Lip Lift Experience

30 days post and from a photo standpoint I think my lips will probably look similar to my last post. In person and when I speak my upper lip protrudes unnaturally and it has a rabbitty look. This is due to stitches and the healing that is taking place under the philtrum. I expect this to calm down between months 3 and 4. At 28 days post I went in for my first cortisone injection and I do believe it helped a bit. I don't think my lip is as swollen in the AM upon rising. I think Dr. Talei's patients may encounter a bit more swelling than other LL patients. I think this is due to the technique he uses to perform the lift. He does somewhat of a modified LL where he does a lip 'release' prior to lifting it. This is to prevent tension on the incision so it doesn't drop or scar. I think this causes more trauma to the area and thus... more swelling.
The incision area is coming along well. The thing most noticeable to me is the hyperpigmentation from the stitches but the incision line continues to grow faint. I currently use pure vit e oil and cocoa butter on the area.
Looking forward to month 2 and the lip continuing to settle down...
When I saw him at 28 days post my lip length was 14mm. I started with approximately 22mm

You look great! But I think you're right, his lip lift patients really seem to have crazy swelling.

Does Dr. Talei cut the upper lip muscle and trim off skin or does he only trim off skin to shorten the distance between upper lip and nose? I have researched that lip lifts are not all performed the same way. I am curious about what makes his procedure different from other surgeons. His prices have gone way up in the last 1.5 yrs.

No, he doesn't cut the muscle, just the skin. He does a lip release to reduce the amount of tension placed on the incision. This involves releasing some of the underlying connective tissue. More details are listed on the LL FAQ page on his website as I am not an expert on this technique.

He seems to have a lot of good information on his web site. He has always been against touching the muscle during a lip lift.

You look absolutely gorgeous!

You look amazing!! I'm getting mine in about a month and am worried about the scar, but every review looks so good!! Your lips look so nice and I don't see a scar at all!

Thanks. Things are settling down more. I'll post an update soon.

Please post a photo and update soon! I would love to see your progress! Have you done laser on your incision? Or do you not need it? I want to do laser but I worry it could hyperpigmentate...as I am of mixed ethnicity.
Can you smile wide yet? Is your philtrum soft and no longer stiff or restricting? Has your nose diminished in swelling back to its original state? As well as your lips?
May 29, 2017
I did micro needling on the incision even though it didn't need it as it was healing fine. It's only been 2 weeks so I need to give it a while longer before judging the micro needling results. I'm almost 12 weeks out and can smile wide and the philtrum is much softer. It's still a bit stiff and swollen though. The swelling in my nose and lips continues to decrease a little at a time continually. At almost 12 weeks it looks fairly normal but I can still feel and see that there is still some swelling.

Thank you so much for this new insight!
It helps me so much as I'm only barely 5 weeks out...
So just to be specific - you can now smile wide and it feels unrestricted or tight and it looks normal?
May 31, 2017
To others you'll look more like yourself but I can still see some residual swelling. Yes, I can smile wide. There is still a little tightness but it's not as much.

Looking good! your scar is not noticeable at all. My philtrum swelling is still there at 11 weeks but is looking almost normal. I think yours will be quicker though.

Thanks carolmac. Yes, the scar isn't that noticeable. What is most noticeable to me are the areas of hyper-pigmentation where the stitches were. I'm currently using Vit E oil and palmer's cocoa butter on the scar area. As far as the swelling, the lip and philtrum swelling are still fairly noticeable. I kind of have that Homer Simpson look. I'm actually going to see him tomorrow for my first cortisone injection which will be at my 4 week mark.

Homer Simpson- lol I can relate! I had a fish look or duck? It looked very odd for me too (my dear husband said I looked like I got hit in the face with a shovel) but at almost 3 months I have to say I look pretty normal thank god! Massage it lots- I roll a qtip up and down my lip muscle even though it hurts it somehow feels better- like kneading a super sore muscle. The kenalog will help a bit for sure.

Great, thanks. I do hope the shot helps because I have to return to work in a few days!

3 week update. Slowly coming along! I'm liking the new look so far. Lip and philtrum swelling still present so it does look a bit 'artificial'. Looking forward to more swelling coming down ....
