My Lip Lift Journey

Lip Lift (Day 1 - Day 8)

WORTH IT$7,800
I visited Dr. Talei in Beverly Hills for the Lip Lift on 6/25/20. This is a procedure I’ve been dreaming of before I even knew it was something that existed! I remember pulling my lip up at age 15 so I could see my teeth, and just wishing it would stay up. The procedure is very pricey (to me) at $7,800. Since I still haven’t gotten to the “finished result”, I can’t fully say yet that it was worth it. However, I do have full faith that I found the best possible doctor for the job. His results speak for themselves, and I’ve been following his work since 2017.I was forced to put a star rating before writing this, which I don’t feel comfortable yet doing. I put 4 stars with hopes that my results will be amazing, however, I can say now that the staff is disorganized, disconnected, hard to contact, and impatient. I’m really trying to give benefit of the doubt as they’ve all just returned to the office from being closed for Covid-19 for 3 months. But for almost $8K, I was expecting top-notch service that sadly is not the case. I want so badly for them to surprise me each time I call or email, but it’s always the same poor service. As business owner myself, the disorganization is hard to deal with. I get passed around when I call, my client coordinator forgot to give me my pain medication Rx, which I ended up needing on day 2 (she blamed the doctor as my surgery was very early and she wasn’t there).I went in last week to get my sutures removed by the nurse (didn’t see doc), and I told her there was something tight in my nose and asked if it was a suture. Without looking, she said there are no sutures inside of my nose. Upon further investigation at home with a flashlight, there IS a suture in there and it’s pulling really tight on my left side. So yeah, little things like this add up to “bad admin”, and it’s definitely disheartening for the price. Final results of my lip lift are yet to be seen. More updates to follow!

They should treat you better! You have spent good money to get the top doctor, he should of taken out your stitches in my opinion. Hope it all works out :)

Thank you, face57! I do agree. Seeing the doctor personally always adds an element of reassurance.

I had a consult with him on FaceTime. I was not impressed because he was late and impersonal. He charged $250 for the consult. I went to Dr Mascaró instead. He charged nothing for the consult and was much more thorough. He charged less than half of what Dr Talei quoted me for the lip lift . I am very happy with the results.

Hi JackyeW, since being on this site, I've seen lots of positive reviews for Dr. Mascaro. I had never heard of him before now. Its so great that you love our results! I agree also that Beverly Hills prices are higher than others. Traveling to another state wasn't an option for me unfortunately, so I had to save my pennies for Dr. Talei. Hoping it was all worth it!

JackeyW, Dr. Mascaro is second to none for lip lift procedure, he did my lip and I loooove the results
June 10, 2021
i agree i consulted with both of them Dr Mascaro was so much more detailed even did an imaging with me. I paid $500 to consult with Dr Talei he was 45 minutes late and didnt even touch me just sat at a chair and chatted.
July 10, 2020
I also had this experience with the FaceTime consult and the disorganized office. It was hard to get in touch with them. He was 2 hours and 20 minutes late for the consult and it was 4 minutes long. His body language faced away the whole time. They even charged me $2000 for a surgery date when we didn't even schedule one. There were just too many red flags. I went to Dr. Pearson instead. Everything has been amazing thus far.

I hear you. My Facetime consult was also really short and I felt like I needed to carry the conversation. I assume & hope that an in-person consult would be more personal and descriptive on his part. I just keep telling myself that he's the best at what he does, despite his stand-offish personality. I'm glad you had a great experience with Dr. Pearson! I'd love to see photos of your experience if you share!
July 12, 2020
I had 2 FaceTime consults and 1 in person prior to my surgery in early June and experienced the exact same thing. I kept trying to meet with him to get a “good feeling” from him because I told myself I wouldn’t follow through with the surgery if not. Ultimately I decided to go forward with it because I knew a couple people who had gone to Dr T and his work is amazing!!! I’m about 5 weeks post lip lift and I do think he did a great job, although there is still a lot of swelling and stiffness so it’s really too early to say. Each day gets a little better and I can’t wait to see my final results. I think we’ll both be really happy when all is said and done!

Still swollen & stiff at 5 weeks?! Oh man, that is not very encouraging. :( I'm a little over 2 weeks now and so tired of looking crazy when I talk or smile. I'd love to see pics if you post!!
July 12, 2020
Yep, almost 5 weeks and the improvements have slowed down lately. I feel like not much swelling or stiffness has been reduced in the last 2-3 weeks so I think I’m going to be one of his patients that takes the whole 3 months+ to recover.
July 12, 2020
I’m just chiming in since I get updates on this post! I am going through the recovery process too guys. I am at 8 weeks and I finally feel like the swelling is gone. I might be a little bit swollen in the mornings still, but not nearly compared to the first 7 weeks. I am still a little tight but getting better. I couldn’t reach my top lip to the bottom of my teeth for the first 5 weeks. I talked like a guppy fish, my bottom lip had to meet my top lip. I’m finally starting to talk normal again but still feel a little tight. I feel like doctors are way to optimistic with the recovery.... it is a long road!!! Longest 8 weeks of my life and more to go!!! But I’m starting to see the light at the end of feel a little normal again. Thank god for quarantine and masks!!
July 12, 2020
Correction: I couldn’t reach my top lip to the bottom of my front teeth for the first 5 weeks! Just wanted to clarify.
User Avatar
July 12, 2020
Well, 8 weeks is my personal goal to look "normal" and at least be able to smile and make expressions. Reason being...I'm flying back to where I'm from in the Midwest for my mom's birthday. I will be around lots of (conservative) family who know me very well, and will think I'm crazy for doing anything to my FACE! This was the only window of time I had, so I took it. But I'm so nervous for that 8 week mark. I'm really hoping for the best at that time! I wish I had more time to heal before going, but that's not an option.

Hi Beautyyyc - Did he do the injections on you at the 4 week check up?? I can't remember what they're called, but he mentioned them as a possibility if the stiffness is really bad (but it's his call when he sees you at 4 weeks if he thinks you need them or not). It's an injection in the muscle to help the stiffness subside.
July 12, 2020
I went for my 4 week check-up but he didn’t think I needed them (even though I was so hopeful I would get them to help speed things up). I also did 4 sessions of the hyperbaric oxygen the first week after my surgery and I purchased a LightStim (for pain - currently discounted on QVC) and used it religiously for an hour a day for the first 3-4 weeks. I have stopped using it more recently, but just started again this week because I’m wondering if it was helping more than I thought.

I will say with my mouth closed, things look really good and I don’t think anyone would be able to tell. My scar is barely visible except for one spot that has a little redness.
My smile is a little joker-like (curls up on the sides and the middle hangs down) and certain movements are still tough to make.. including closing my top lip down towards my bottom lip. I am far from 8 weeks though so don’t let any of this scare you. The difference I saw from week 2-4 was huge so I still think a have a lot of improvement I will see by week 8. I can keep checking back in with you here to help put you more at ease! As Enthusiastic788246 said she is finally feeling like she is not swollen at 8 weeks so we have hope!!

beautyyyc - Wow!! It definitely sounds like you are doing everything right. Because I'm about 3 hours from Beverly Hills, I didn't go to his office for the extra treatments. However, there is a RedLight Therapy place nearby that I started with this week. I'll probably do a couple treatments a week for a while to see if it helps. Currently, it feels like I have a marble on each of the sides of my mouth. That's the best way to describe it. Then above my Cupid's bow, it's just very swollen & numb. My scar is fading every day. I can already tell that it will be nearly invisible. Very pleased with that! I'll post another update at end of this coming week. :-)
July 12, 2020
Omg I feel your concern. My mouth is much more mobile by this time and I can finally say my Ps, Ms, and Bs comfortably. My parents are super conservative (from Montana) and they flipped out about my surgery. My mom told me I ruined my perfect face, but I still had a lot of healing to do at that time. It sucks that there is such a bad stigma around plastic surgery. I will say, I wish I gave my family a heads up beforehand, not for their sake but for mine. The things my mom said to me really hurt. I don’t blame her though - if I wasn’t prepared for this whole thing then I couldn’t possibly expect her to be prepared to see my new face. Since your doctor cut the muscle I’m not sure how that would affect the healing process. I have seen another one of his patients look totally healed by 3 weeks (don’t you hate those people?). Just continue to be patient, don’t stretch out the skin, and evaluate how you feel at 8 weeks. In worst case scenario, tell your family that you are feeling sick. We are in a pandemic after all. Just follow your gut and don’t push yourself if you feel uncomfortable. This recovery can be very emotional already.
User Avatar
July 12, 2020
I totally agree, Enthusiastic788246! It's a very emotional process, and people never talk bout that part of it. Our brains have to catch up to what we've done physically, and what we see in the mirror. So it takes even more catching up for others who see us!
July 12, 2020
I don’t mean to be pessimistic at all... I really hope you feel great by week 8! You have a lot of time to go. A whole month and a half. I just think it is important to be ultra sensitive and kind to yourself during this time. That might mean saying no to certain situations, taking a warm bubble bath, or cooking your favorite meal lol. The recovery can be difficult and disheartening at times. I think your results are going to be incredible, it is just a matter of time.
User Avatar
July 12, 2020
I didn't take you as pessimistic at all! More like realistic, which is what I need to be too haha. I keep telling myself I still have 5 weeks til my 8 week mark. I'm hopeful and will baby myself a little extra in the mean time. :-)
July 12, 2020
Omg! I am giggling because I totally know what you mean by joker smile. I thought I was going to look like Donatella Versace (google her smile)! It has gotten soo much better though. Your lip is going to relax sooooooo much. Don’t even worry. I was stressing myself out and cried myself to sleep many nights. It wasn’t worth it. I promise, there is hope. I think I still have a long way to go don’t get me wrong. But I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

This website is great. I feel like family and friends struggle to find the right words to say at times... On here, we are all going through it together!
July 12, 2020
Yes, definitely agree I love this website!! Although I’m not brave enough to share my face, I am brave enough here to share openly how I feel and what I’m experiencing! I have no regret about having the procedure done at all, but there are days I think “why did I do this to myself?!” and I know everyone here can relate... my family, not so much, because they’re asking me that same question!
July 13, 2020
Would you mind sharing the cost of your lip lift at Dr Pearson's? Thanks!
July 14, 2020
$6500...Consultation was free and over the phone after sending his office pictures. I did both the sub nasal and corner lip lift at the same time. Cost may be less if you just do the sub nasal.
July 14, 2020
Omg please post a review @dstrflw99 I would love to see!!!! Pearson seems to be incredible.

Oops I put the wrong @. Meant to say @panandjelly.

I am certain he is highly skilled and you will be satisfied with your ultimate result. Some day, if I'm brave enough, I will share. I had my procedure two days before yours. And I also just have to remind myself to be patient with everything. I've been fortunate that Dr. Pearson is very compassionate and has answered all questions and concerns along the way.

Do you still have hardening/stiffness/swelling around lips? I'm so freaked out by my weird smile! Haha
July 10, 2020
Definitely. And I asked him about this. It's all normal. I don't even want to smile with teeth right now. Good thing we have masks.
User Avatar
July 10, 2020
I know!! Can you even imagine doing this in normal, mask-less life?! I cannot! :-P
October 6, 2024
Yikes! After reading these remarks I'm freaking out and thinking I should cancel! I have an appointment this month and he wants to remove my implant and do a lift.i have disappearing lips and I don't really know what he plans on doing. Everything everyone has said is true. But that being said he is capable of excellent work. I don't care if he's rude if he does a Good job. My concern I now does he always do a good job! Should I cancel?

I just realized that I follow this surgeon on Instagram. I even wrote myself a note that if I ever needed anything else to my face I would go to him. Hopefully he reads comments about him and his stafff that he makes some changes.

Update on Lip Lift with Dr. Talei (Days 9-11).

I may have spoken too soon on the office staff. The issues I’ve had did happen, HOWEVER, the past few days since I’ve had some questions/concerns on my healing process, I’ve been in touch with the medical concierge in the office. Her name is Bnar (goes by “B”). She’s been SO helpful, attentive, and patient! I’ve really appreciated her help and calming personality. . In fact, she’s lined up a call for me to speak to the doc today about my main concerns (hardening around lips, tightness inside of nose, and difficulty closing mouth completely).
Photos attached of days 9, 10, & 11 process.

Thank you, your review has been so helpful! I've been considering a lip lift with Dr. Talei in a few months. Your incision is healing up really nicely and so quickly! Your photos still show some bruising on the left side of your lip, so hopefully that's causing the unevenness. Do you feel like the widening of your nostrils has gone away or subsided? Was that because of all of the swelling?
User Avatar
July 7, 2020
Hi Bright1009, thank you! I think the improvement is happening slowly, which is normal (just hard to be patient). I think there might be a little widening still in my nostrils, but that's expected to lessen as the incision & swelling continues to tighten, heal, and disappear. Immediately after you have the procedure, your nostrils are quite widened! But this is not permanent. So far Dr. Talei has been knowledgeable, kind, and patient, just as I expected. If you end up doing a lip lift, there's no better doctor in CA to do it! I truly believe that. I'll keep posting updates for you & others to read. I wish there had been more reviews for me to read/see prior to my procedure.
July 7, 2020
Thank you so much! Yes exactly, and it's really helpful to know what to expect during healing too!
July 8, 2020
Thank you so much for the update! It looks great!! How many mm did you remove??
User Avatar
July 8, 2020
Hi Enthusiastic788246, between 8-9 mm removed. I believe Dr. Talei said 11 mm is the max he will remove.
July 8, 2020
Thanks for your reply! Good to know. I am excited to follow your recovery! You are in great hands with Dr. Talei. I just got a lip lift 2 months ago and my recovery has been slower than normal. My only advice is to be as patient as possible ❤️ Best of luck!!
July 9, 2020
I was going through the same thing last week. This Friday will be 3 weeks since my lip lift. I can close my mouth more comfortably now and my lips and mouth are not as dry. It's getting better!!! I think your result is going to be great!
User Avatar

Thank you Anon77745! Where did you get your lip lift done? I would love to see photos! Did you have hardness/stiffness around your lips? I'm still dealing with that.
July 9, 2020
In Chicago! I have not made a review, maybe I should. Oh my yes... my nose base is SO tight and hard Those internal sutures probably take around 3 months to dissolve. I have a pink undertone to my skin and my surgeon said my scar will stay pink a little longer and may take longer to fade. I'm also dealing with itching. It will randomly be very itchy and I want to claw at it lol!! Man I'm hoping this turns out good... fingers crissed!
User Avatar
July 9, 2020
Yes, very itchy and tingly here too!! I'm hoping that means signs of healing. I think the nerves are waking up and getting feeling back.

Update on Lip Lift (Days 12-21)

User Avatar
cali_mama_3
The healing continues! For those considering a lip lift with Dr. Talei specifically, please keep in mind that because of the technique he uses, the healing is a slowwww process. He doesn’t just cut the skin, pull it up, and sew it under the nose (as many/most do). He cuts the skin, as well as the muscle so as to release tension. That’s why his incisions DO NOT pull tight, “buckle”, and leave a red, thick scar. However, this method leaves a lot more healing for your face to do below the surface.
As of today, 3 weeks: I have what I call “marbles” above the corners of my lips on each side. Hard balls that I can feel under there, and that seriously make me look crazy when I smile or speak with expression. My nostrils are still a bit widened as you’ll see in a few of my pics this time. Three weeks is when Dr. Talei & his staff say that “strangers won’t know you had anything done”. Well...that may be true because I can easily hide my scar, but these strangers will think you look strange, and odd, and joker-ish if they see you smile or speak. Thank goodness for MASKS!!!!
I FaceTimed with Dr. Talei on day 12 and he encouraged me to trust the process, be patient, and assured me that the final product will look quite different than right now. Which I’m grateful for, cuz I’m not happy with the “result” at this point. I miss my smile SO much. I miss looking normal.
More updates after my 4 week checkup next week!

Hang in there!! I’m at week 6 and I finally feel like I can kinda, sorta see the light at the end of the tunnel (and only a week ago I was saying I hadn’t seen progress in a couple weeks). I still have so much healing to do and time is starting to move more slowly the more anxious I am to be fully healed! lol .. but things are changing for the best each day! At the 3 month mark we’ll be looking back glad we went through the slow healing process for best possible results!!! :) Yours are looking great already!
User Avatar
July 17, 2020
Beautyyyc - I'm still dying to see a photo from you!! There are so few "progress" photos from Dr. Talei's patients. Just beautiful "before & afters". I don't feel like there's enough out there about this really difficult middle, healing section. :-(
July 23, 2020
This is why what you're doing matter all the most. Thank you for sharing your experience!!!
July 17, 2020
Though you may feel extremely stiff and swollen, you actually look a lot farther along than I did at 3 weeks! I see what you mean about how the muscle releases tension, which helps prevent scarring! I think I am going to have a pretty thick scar and possibly need a revision. It is what it is! I think you are going to scar beautiful and, honestly, that is the most important part in my opinion!! The rest will fall into place (literally)! Your lip is going to drop and loosen up like crazy! You are going to look like a different person in a few months, especially when your nostrils return back to normal. My nose is still a little swollen at 2 months but it is finally starting to take on its old shape. Thanks for the update!
July 23, 2020
Just needed to comment and let you know that I know exactly what you’re going through (to some degree since I had a different surgeon) but still, the recovery is super awkward, emotional, etc. all you want is to feel like you look “normal”. I also mourned my smile and I can tell you, it DOES get better, day by day. I still have awkwardness and tightness in certain areas (I’m 7 weeks post-op) and show a video of this on my review but each day it gets better. Healing take times! Give yourself grace and patience. And yes, thank GOODNESS for face masks!!!
User Avatar
July 23, 2020
I checked out your review, OC_gal - you look GREAT!!! I don't even notice the tightness when you talk, although I'm sure you can feel it. Do you feel like it's easier to smile now at 7 weeks? (I'm at 4 weeks today)
July 23, 2020
Yes, smiling gets easier and easier day by day but it’s definitely a slooooowwww progress, but still! I talked to a girl who was 8 months post-op and asked her, “do you feel like you can talk and smile like you did before the surgery?!” And she said absolutely! And she had quite a bit taken off so I’d definitely say, it’s a slow progression but the body will adapt, we were just cut and it takes time for the body to heal
February 18, 2023
Thank you so much for writing this all out. I'm 9 days post op and I can't help shake the feeling I've ruined my face forever. I started w / 18.5 mm philtrum and went down 5.5 mm, which is not considered TONS, but I've got an insane bunny mouth.. your images and story are giving me hope. THanks a lot. xx
User Avatar
February 25, 2023
Hello Brave401135,

I totally understand!! The bunny mouth was REAL for me too as you can see in my pics! I went from 20mm down to 11mm, so it was a lot to get used to, however, NOW there is no bunny mouth at all. It really does settle, but it takes a little while. Good luck! The mental healing is the hardest part - looking in the mirror and not recognizing yourself. You've got this! XOXO
