Change has been amazing!

My tummy was so flat right after surgery, so the fact that I have a little "pooch" is slightly disappointing - BUT the overall results have been so good I don't focus on that! I have a lap, I can shop in a regular store (I'm not confined to mil order only), I can sit in a booth in a restaurant, I don't have a rash on my belly and legs from the heat - just to name a few positives that have come with my panniculectomy. After my gastric bypass, this is the best choice I have ever made!

Scar tissue

I'm struggling with thick, hard scar tissue. It's uncomfortable but not unbearable. I'm massaging the area throughout the day and hoping it helps to break it down. My younger brother has had problems with keloid scarring in the past, so I guess it's possible I'm more susceptible to scarring than other people. I haven't had any problems in the past, but this is the biggest wound my body has ever had to deal with. I've had a couple of suggestions for homemade salves that are supposed to help, and I plan to make one soon.

Work in progress

I'm almost a month post op and still very happy with my decision to have a panniculectomy. My recovery has been pretty smooth and I am healing well. All my sutures are out, but I still have one drain. It comes out for sure this Wednesday. I'll be happy to get rid of it - it pinches every time I sit down or move while sitting. I am still having more than 50 cc's of drainage everyday, but my surgeon doesn't want to leave it in for more than a month. I have quite a bit of swelling, but very little pain. I found a binder that provides more coverage and helps a bit with the swelling. From what I've read, it can take up to a year for complete healing and resolution of swelling. I'll just have to be patient!

Overall rating

Now that I'm more than a month post-op, I can give more information than my previous review. Dr. Phillips has been absolutely wonderful! He holds high expectations for himself and has a great bedside manner. He is very responsive to questions and truly wants the best outcomes for his patients, but keeps expectations realistic. He is also thorough and attentive. If I were to need another reconstructive procedure in the future, I would definitely return to Dr. Phillips!
