My double mastectomy, expander process and implant...

Expander nightmare
WORTH IT
My double mastectomy, expander process and implant placement was a complete mess. I endured 4 surgeries, thousands of dollars out of pocket, a life threatening MRSA inflection and 10 months out of work only to end up with the inability to move either arm normally, constant pain, and a cosmetic result that gave me a set of AA rock hard cold "breasts" . I would have been far happier with nothing. Of all the surgeons I met, only Dr. Khouri told me he could restore my function rather than my looks. I literally got my life back and returned to work as a physician 2 weeks after my first surgery. I just finished my 4th procedure with him and I could not be happier. While I am scheduled for one more revision, the results are outstanding. My pain is gone, my lymphedema substantially improved, my arm function has returned, and I now have a proportionate 38D real, soft, warm, normal looking breasts with sensation.
The staff is super friendly and right on top of everything. They are extremely easy to communicate with by phone or email. Each follow up procedure was scheduled at my post op visit making planning very easy. The insurance processes is handled completely for you. The surgery center itself is convenient, and the staff there all caring and extremely competent as well.
My only regret is that I did not know about Dr. Khouri before my mastectomies.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story here on Realself. Sounds like you have gone through alot of discomfort and pain, so sorry to hear that. I am so glad that you were able to find a wonderful doctor to help you and that everything worked out perfectly. I would be thrilled if you would share photos with the community, only if you are comfortable of course.

Congratulations on your choice of reconstruction and almost completed!! That is exciting. I also have been visiting Dr. Khouri. I cannot imagine a better way to fix what others have broken. And the results are amazing. I will have two more procedures this year then I am also done. I also have regained flexibility, lymphedema is all but gone now....What a gift! Congratulations again, I understand your happiness.

Hi, I see your post is from last year. I am considering the same surgery with a Chicago Surgeon. Are you still satisfied with this surgery? Do you have to get mammograms? Have you had any necrosis or oil cyst? So many questions, I'm sorry. Would you do it again and does it feel better now that that implant is gone? Thanks so much !!!

From lousy looking with implants to fabulous with fat graft only reconstruction

Expander nightmare
I think the photos speak for themselves, but what you don't see is the severe pain and the restriction in movement of my arms that I was suffering in the first photo

Post Mastectomy Breast Reconstruction with Fat Transfer

Expander nightmare

This was my 6th surgery by Dr. Khouri to repair my botched implant reconstruction after bilateral mastectomy that was originally done in Erie, PA. The man is an artist and I feel like I have transformed from looking like my surgeries were done by Picasso to Michaelangelo. I now have breasts that look and feel better than what I had before the mastectomies. The pre-op appointment wait time is often exceptionally long (over 3 hours) because he does them during breaks in his OR schedule, but once he sees you, you will have his undivided attention. If you bring a sandwich, tons of reading material and a healthy attitude that it is worth the wait to see the very best, then the wait wont bother you. The pre-op communications with surgical scheduler and coordinator Cindy are extremely efficient, prompt and responsive. Blanca, the RN, also answers any questions promptly either through email or her personal cell phone. While all surgery is uncomfortable, I actually found myself looking forward to my trips to Miami and as I recover this time I am a little sad that this was my probably my last procedure and I wont be interacting with this exceptional team any more.

I have noticed an increase in hot flashes with each surgery, this is a bonus for me because I elected not to take hormonal medications. I am a little afraid of the finish out and scar revisions it sounds like you were pleased, for your body were the scars pretty good?
