Invisalign at 56? Must Be Crazy! - Keller, TX

I have always wanted a better smile and was always...

I have always wanted a better smile and was always afraid to ask about braces. I hate going to the dentist for any reason and would never sign up for any cosmetic procedure. So, what changed? My husband went to the orthodontist and inquired about Invisalign and brought the information home. He then made an appointment for me. I never would have done this myself.

The initial consultation was pretty easy. They create 3D digital renderings of your actual teeth and animate the changes the teeth will undergo during treatment. I was told my teeth weren't too bad and could expect 15 - 18 sets of trays (upper and lower braces) and possibly 3 final adjustment trays. Each set of trays would be worn for about 2 weeks and we could potentially speed things up by shortening the time period that each set would be worn. They would stay away from attachments (material placed on the teeth that resembles a nub and allows for targeted teeth movement). I decided to go ahead with the processes.

A few weeks later I received the first sets of trays. That was a little over a week ago. The trays are super easy to put on and take off. They remind me of a mouth guard that your kids might use to play certain sports. You need to wear them 22 hours or more daily and you take them off when you eat and drink. I was surprised to learn that the original 15 - 18 sets of trays had become 25 when the plan was complete. I sure hope that this can be shortened as I go through the process.

I found that the edges are rough and discovered that my tongue and gums became irritated from the rough edges. The orthodontist told me I could use a nail file to file these edges down which I attempted to do. A nail file is a little too large to fit in all the right places and I didn't want to damage them. Filing helped but the edges were still uncomfortable so I decided to try dental wax. This worked pretty well but I ended up with wax all over the place. So I get a little more aggressive with the nail file and it finally worked!

So after a couple of attempts to remove the wax I researched the best way to clean the braces and invested in a sonic cleaner and 3 minute Polident tablets. Best thing I did! This process gets them super clean.

My routine is pretty basic. I remove them as soon as I get up in the morning and put them in the sonic cleaner for a 6 minute cycle with the Polident. I repeat the cleaning process each time I remove them when I am at home. When I am away from home, I remove them privately and place them in water with a Polident tablet (ziploc bag). Before putting them back on my teeth, I brush or rinse my mouth well with water and rinse the braces. My teeth have never been brushed so much!

The first week has been okay. I haven't found them too inconvenient and they are pretty comfortable. My teeth haven't been tender or sore, just my tongue and inner lips from the rough edges have but the filing helped tremendously! I am anxious to move on to the next set of trays.

Hello, and welcome to the community!  You aren't crazy at all!  Have you met some of our other Invisaligners?  We have several who started older than you, but lots in their fifties as well.  MsKityCity, AreYouKiddingMe, sheemoho (mostly just answers comments), adam1995 (has had a rough time!) humbleoracle, Gwenifer, knitsew, Cazzieboo, aloevera, and ScareDCat.  witsman4 is our newest and the same age as you, but she only has one post so far so I don't know if she's active.  All these links go to reviews, not to profiles, so you can look at their stories :).

I was wondering why they're going to stay away from attachments, since they tend to make your treatment faster.

Thanks for joining us, and I look forward to watching your progress!  Oh, and I hope I get to--let me know if you need help with pictures :).

HI, I am 62!! Male and have been "on" Invisalign now for almost 6 months. I hate everything about them. I have been told 14 months and I am NOT going to have any more treatment than that other than to wear them at night. They are so much work - in, out in out clean teeth clean the trays etc etc. They don't hurt (that worries me, they should hurt if they are going to work right?) but they make me feel like I have an uncomfortable mouth guard in all the time. I am relieved when I get to sleep and that is the only time I can ignore them. They are really as visible as metal and I am tired of people fixing their gaze on my mouth when I talk (which I also do very badly). The spikes on my teeth are ugly and very visible, may as well wear braces. I have almost given up a couple of times. Oh and they stain my teeth something terrible even though I am constantly cleaning them and my teeth. I never get used to them and the 22 hours a day is unrealistic unless you retire to a monastary for the duration.

I am still new to this and at this point don't find them too inconvenient. I do agree that 22 hours a day is a bit much, but I do the best I can. I do wear mine when I go out to run errands and haven't noticed people staring or fixating on my mouth. I know that when I see older people wearing metal braces I have a tendency to fixate on them! So I guess the advantage here is that unless I am talking I am unaware that I am wearing them. I do notice that I really concentrate on enunciation and tongue placement when I talk. I am hoping that this dissipates the longer that I wear them. I would really hate to see you invest 14 months into your improved smile to abandon it at the end. You should stay with it until you are thrilled with your new smile. I know it is easy for me to say but I've got to believe that the hardest part will be over. Good luck with your journey!

Thank you. I will stay with it. I am almost half way and I think once I get past the half way point I might feel better, it will be the down-hill run. Looking at the original photos I can see some change in them so I am pleased with that. I am conscientious so try to wear them as much as I can. 21 hours is do-able, not 22. Thanks for the support.

@Seaglory, I rarely wore mine more than the minimum 20 recommended by Invisalign, and my teeth definitely haven't fallen out!

I promise that I am not laughing AT you but I did have to chuckle a bit while reading your comments - I GET YOU! The first few days for me were absolutely horrible...several times a day I thought about giving up. I pretty much dislike everything about these "teeth chokers" as well. You are SO right, they are so much work!! And right again, 22 hours is totally unrealistic. My ortho told me to keep it at 18-20 hours and it would not add any time to my treatment....she agrees that 22 is just crazy. So far, I'm on track...have another checkup next week, we'll see if that's still true. Yeah, wow...after 6 months, I'd think you would experience SOME soreness! Have you asked your doc about this? Don't give up, you're halfway done!

Thank you for your kind words of support. Yes I think 20 hours is easily achievable but not 22. I put set 13 in yesterday so I am almost half way. Hope the result makes it worthwhile. Barry

I just started invisalign 2 days ago when I was a young 56. I turned 57 today! The process of removal and brushing and keeping them in 22 hours a day is challenging but I'm committed! I believe treatment will take about 14 months. Maybe a little longer. I am getting attachments later this month on 3 teeth. Keep me posted on your progress. Any tips from the community manager on taking photos would be great! Good luck!!

Thanks for the encouraging words! I did attempt to load photos, but there appeared to be a problem. I'll give it another go and see if I can be successful. Looks like we are taking this Invisalign journey at the same time. I don't believe that I will have any attachments, but I will ask better questions when I go for my follow up. Thanks again.

Another week down!

baruhl
The braces became way too comfortable in week two. I developed a habit of pulling them down partially on my upper teeth and pushing them back up with my tongue. I would describe them as feeling "spongey". So I decided it was time to move to the next set of retainers before the scheduled time.

The second set of retainers were tight when I first put them on and it felt like they held my teeth better. I didn't have the uncomfortable edges like I did with the first set. It could be that I am really getting used to having a foreign object in my mouth! I've been wearing them almost a week and they are much more comfortable than they were initially. They still feel pretty tight on my teeth and I haven't started pulling them off yet.

I did revise my routine a bit. I still put them in the sonic cleaner with Polident in the morning to make sure they are fresh and clean. Instead of repeating the sonic cleaner throughout the day, I am now just putting them in water with the Polident tablet when I eat. They are still fresh and this process is a little easier than cleaning the sonic cleaner multiple times in a day. And I will admit that I plan eating to minimize the brushing process!

My teeth really don't hurt but I have noticed that they do feel sharper when I remove the braces to eat. I can also tell that the braces are working because I am more aware of chewing harder foods (carrots, chips, ice), but I wouldn't say that my teeth hurt or eating is painful.

I know it has only been a little more than two weeks that I have been wearing them and I believe that I can already see a change in my teeth. I'll find out more in a couple of weeks at my follow up appointment.

Based on the reviews that I have read, I will be armed with some additional questions for my ortho. I don't believe that I will have attachments or bands but I will confirm. I'll try to upload pictures again. I tried before but it wasn't successful!

How long did you end up wearing the first aligner for?  I'd definitely let the doctor know, just so he knows how quickly your teeth are moving and he can make sure there's no root resorbtion going on :).
