AEK Hair Clinic - Ethical and Professional
As a UK patient, I chose AEK due to his strong reputation on hair loss forums and his certifications. I will list both positives and negatives of my experience to hopefully better inform.
Please note my talk with the Dr and the procedure happened on the same day, which was my request.
An outline of my experience is as follows:
I sent my photos to the AEK team and received available dates. I also chose whether to have a technician or the doctor perform the procedure.
I chose the technician procedure and made my payment. I then received information about how to prepare for the procedure, and details of the hotel and driver.
The driver picked me up on time from the airport and was friendly. Hotel staff were especially helpful and after some sleep I was taken to the clinic by one of the friendly AEK team.
The technician introduced herself and blood samples were taken. Numbing injections were given and grafts were extracted, which took about 3.5 hrs. The back and side of my head were then bandaged. The top and front of my head were not shaved, so I could discuss my hair with the Dr.
The Dr and I then spoke about my aims, and he drew a suitable outline of the area where the grafts would be placed. The next 4 hrs involved numbing injections in my recipient area before the grafts were planted.
After the grafts were planted I watched an aftercare video before returning to my hotel. The next day I returned to the clinic to have the bandage removed and my scalp washed. I was given driver details for my return to the airport and I thanked the doctor, technician and team.
I was picked up from the hotel on time and caught my flight.
Negatives:
- No chance to speak with Dr about your aims before arriving in Istanbul, so there's a chance you could be disappointed if your goals and his advice don't match. The doctor will likely keep your hairline the same, and if you're young he will not want to fill your crown. Thankfully I was happy with his advice.
- Unless you're local, talking with the surgical team could be awkward
- Hotel breakfast is free, meals are not free
- You will not stay in a tourist section of Istanbul
- Aftercare creams and shampoo given to you by clinic are wasted as I could not take them through airport security
Positives:
- The Dr is very responsible. He plans long term for your hair and will not remove a massive number of grafts. He also charges for the session, not for each graft, so that there's no rush and grafts are not wasted.
- Importantly, AEK will communicate with you after your procedure to check your progress in the next year.
- The response time from the AEK team whenever I emailed them a question was most of the time fantastic
- Hygiene levels at the clinic were very good
- The clinic and hotel are walking distance from each other
- The team are very friendly and there's a relaxed atmosphere. They even managed to have my hotel check-out time delayed for me.
Overall, I believe the Dr to be ethical and realistic. He will not waste all of your grafts for one procedure and his team is professional. Their communication is excellent but mainly it is their ethics and long-term approach which impressed me.
