Very Disappointed by the Poor Bedside Manner of the Doctor
This is my second procedure with Dr. Metin Kerem. I’m writing a separate review for the Rhinoplasty I had 3 months ago. I will try to be as fair as possible even though I’m quite unhappy today after my final follow-up. In case you don’t have time to read through the whole story, here are the main reasons for my dissatisfaction:
1. I couldn’t close my left eyelid well and suffered from severe to moderate eye irritations for weeks.
2. The doctor denied the complication in my left eye, tried to blame it on my different eyelid crease (I think it’s too much for his ego to admit he can make mistakes)
3. He has a poor bedside manner. I was giving him feedback on what I liked and what I disliked, which should be important for a doctor to learn or at least listen because I’m a customer and a patient, he said ” talking about it is just wasting both of our time”
It might be too early to give any points to end results as it’s been only 5 weeks, but for how much I suffered in the recovery process due to a common complication, I’d give no more than 4 points for his technical skills (and/or experience with this procedure). But for doctor’s attitude and lack of professionalism and empathy, I’d give him 2 points, and by averaging it, I’m very sorry to give 3 points for my overall experience.
Here’s the full story if you have time and patience:
I had upper eyelid blepharoplasty for droopy eyelids 5 weeks ago. I went for Dr. Metin Kerem believing that he’s one of the top surgeons in Istanbul, and I paid more than twice as much as an average upper eyelid blepharoplasty cost in Istanbul (for a domestic patient, according to my dermatologist).
The doctor said on the day of the surgery that I should be able to work on my computer instantly, which I was very happy about because I’m a consultant and missing one day of work will cost me at least 300 USD. But in reality, the pain and discomfort in my left eye was so much worse than my right eye and as a result, it was impossible to work for the first week, all I could do was sleep. I used eye drops nonstop as instructed. I realized that it was because my left eyelid was not closing all the way even when I tried hard. As you can see in the picture, 3 weeks after the surgery, the difference between left eye and right eye was so big that I thought about going to the eye specialist due to constant red eye and tears. I had to push my eyelid down to let the tears come out because otherwise I’d have blurry vision. The doctor advised me not to go to an eye specialist and see him for a follow-up appointment instead, he checked my eyes and said it’s normal and I should be able to close my eyelid normally in 6 weeks…
Fast forward 2 more weeks, I’m in the doctor’s office for the final follow-up for blepharoplasty procedure. And I’m explaining him how hard the recovery has been for me that I felt stressed and depressed from not being able to work. I was explaining how my right eye is perfect and I hope the inner left eye crease will fall a bit because I don’t like my inner crease wider than my outer crease, and he says “ Talking about it now is pointless, it’s just wasting both of our time”. Excuse me? Empathy much? I didn’t even get a “I’m sorry you had such a hard time with recovery”. I completely understand that complications like that occur and sometime doctors take a little too much skin and hopefully with time, it’ll be back to normal, but the doctor completely denied there’s anything wrong with my left eye!!!! I mean everybody around me can see and tell me my right eye is nice and something is a bit off with my left eye, but my own doctor says he cannot see any issue!!! He blames it for my eye crease being different on the left eye. How can a doctor improve with that much arrogance? How come a doctor is not be able to comfort a patient and say “sorry you suffered so much, be a little patient”?
As speaking of wasting time, every time I go to the clinic for follow-up, I had to wait for at least half an hour, and the doctor only takes a couple of minutes for the checkup. He never asked if I had any discomfort or any complaints etc.
