I have had upper dentures since 1996, and due to bone loss, they have been very difficult to wear. Over the past years I have had work done to try to save my bottom teeth, but it too was becoming a loss. I'm ready for a permanent solution to my dental problems. I called and scheduled a consultation for the All-On-4 Procedure with Dr. Mounir Iskandar. On the day of the consultation the X-Ray Scan was done, and the Doctor's assistant asked me some questions. Dr. Iskandar came in and looked at the X-Rays, but never looked inside my mouth. He told me that he would be able to perform the procedure, but I wouldn't be able to wear a temporary bridge on top after the procedure because of the amount of bone loss I had from wearing dentures for so long. He said he could place the temporary bridge on the bottom, but I would have to continue to wear my denture on top while the implants heal and secure in to place.
On the way out, I talked to Frank, who told me what the different costs were - removable vs fixed, and gave me some financing options. I went home and gave myself a few days to think about it, then called and scheduled the appointment for the impressions and surgery. I was told that $2000 would be due when they did the impressions, and another $18,000 would be due the day of surgery. Then the remainder either $12,000 or $20,000 would be due down the road when it got time to put in the permanent teeth. Removable total cost $32,000 and Fixed total cost $40,000.
I paid my $2000 down on the day of impressions. The morning I arrived for surgery, Frank asked me to pay an additional $20,000 instead of the $18,000 he had told me previously. It caught me off guard because we had discussed $20,000 at the front, and the other $20,000 towards the end. I told Frank I was only prepared to pay the $18,000, and he said that would be ok.
SURGERY DAY 1: Dr. Iskandar did the upper first. I took my medications before the surgery, and did not feel a thing during the procedure. When I got home, I slept for awhile, then sat up and iced while I watched some TV in the evening.
SURGERY DAY 2: I woke up swollen from the first day of surgery, but it was time to go back for the lower part of the surgery. This time I had to have teeth pulled before the implants could be placed. Surgery went the same as day 1, no pain and nothing to remember.
On the third day after surgery, I stayed home and tried to rest. My dentures felt horrible in my mouth, and don't align right with the bottom temporary teeth. I knew I had a follow up the next day, so I just tried to relax.
DAY 4: I had a follow up visit in the afternoon. My face swelled very bad, and the bruising started to set in, including a black eye. Dr. Iskandar said that the extreme swelling and bruising was because he had to set eight implants in both the top and bottom jaw bones. He tried to drill away at the bottom temporary to try and help with the alignment issue. He also drilled my upper denture down to almost nothing but the teeth. He did not put caps over the implants, so they are exposed.
DAY 7: Today is day 7, and I am very miserable. My face is still horribly bruised. The lower temporary bridge feels tight and bulky in my mouth. My upper denture (or what is left of it) doesn't sit right in my mouth and just wobbles around. I really can't chew anything, so I just drink soups, protein shakes and yogurts. I have ventured with some scrambled eggs and mashed potatoes, but the reality is that eating is very difficult, and I can't really taste what I'm eating anyways. It's also very hard to talk because of the way my denture rubs against the bottom temporary bridge. I'm just trying to be patient, as I know the gums need time to heal. I have an appointment on the 22nd to have the stiches removed. No one from Dr. Iskandar's office has called me to see how I'm doing. I have not been happy with their communication skills, and I really feel a bit in the dark about what I should be expecting when the stitches come out. I feel like I should have functional temporary teeth for the price I am paying, and I don't feel like that is what I am getting.
I am posting pictures from before, and then over the past 7 days. I will update next week with a progress report.
