A MESS of a MedSpa

I’ve been to this medspa twice now, and both visits were disappointing for different reasons. I purchased a package for 2 microderms and IPL sessions after researching local medspas with seemingly good reviews. However, based on my experience, I suspect many of their reviews are incentivized through a $50-off promotion rather than reflecting the quality of their services.

On my first visit, things started off okay. After my microderm, I declined numbing cream since I haven’t needed it for IPLs in the past, but the aesthetician insisted that adding it would allow them to turn the machine higher for better results. I agreed and continued with the procedure.
After the IPL, the tech recommended I purchase AQ Active Serum that she can apply immediately afterward for better results, which I purchased.
However, when I checked my email receipt after leaving, I noticed I had been overcharged for treatments I didn’t receive. They also performed a chest microderm without asking if I wanted it before proceeding, but since I did receive that service it was less of a concern.

Addressing the billing error required both an email and a phone call. The manager was unprofessional and unwilling to admit the mistake, but they eventually credited my account for the services I didn’t receive for next time.

I didn’t see significant results from my first treatment and was hopeful the next would be better. However, the issues escalated.

On the day of my appointment, the rude receptionist called at 9:15am to move my appointment from 3:15pm to 11:00am to fill gaps in their schedule. While she didn’t make it seem like an option, I declined, as I’d intentionally booked a specific time. It’s not the client’s job to rearrange their day for the spa’s convenience.

When I arrived, the first esthetician seemed more focused on upselling products and procedures than the last, but ironically, she mentioned that numbing cream isn’t necessary for IPL and can actually reduce results because it acts as a barrier—contradicting what the first esthetician had told me. Great.

I then waited 45 minutes in the treatment room without any explanation. During that time, I overheard staff loudly gossiping about coworkers, cussing and doing anything but treating patients. When the treatment finally began, I was told my appointment had been updated to include numbing cream (which I never requested), and that’s why there was a delay. This lack of communication was incredibly disrespectful of my time.

I mentioned that I wasn’t seeing the usual browning or improvement I’d experienced with IPLs in the past. The esthetician suggested that the active serum she sold me during my first visit might have “overcorrected” the browning. Confused, I later Googled it and discovered that AQ Active Serum, or any serum with actives, aren’t recommended until 7–10 days after IPL—not immediately after, as they advised and applied for me. Great a waste of a $165 serum on top of 2 services!

Overall, this medspa needs significant improvement in communication, professionalism, and expertise. Theres a lot of great medspas in Newport Beach, I suggest taking your money to one of those.
