Hey Guys! So I am coming up on my first full month on Accutane and thought I would start a review to keep track of my progress. As a user of Accutane with mild acne, I often feel like many people's stories are much different than mine, so I wanted to start this review for anyone with similar skin as mine. After 2 years of trying to find a more permanent solution for my problematic skin, I was finally recommended Accutane by the 3rd dermatologist I visited over this time period. So a little about me: I am a 21 year old student (currently taking a semester off) who is 5'6" and weighs 118 lbs. I have oily skin and break out for about 3 weeks of every month... fun stuff. I have tried 3 antibiotics including Bactrim (favorite), mino and doxycycline, and easily 5+ topicals, my favorite being Epiduo forte. A month prior to starting Absorbica 40 mg, I have been taking Bactrim and used Epiduo forte for the 3 weeks leading up. At about 2-3 weeks into Accutane, I had an initial breakout that lasted a couple week and was pretty manageable; nothing heavily cystic, but lots of purging happening. These are my before photos:

Dr. Mays at the Dermalogical Association of Texas was the only doctor who took my skin seriously. She listened to me and actually gave me a solution rather than just another band-aid. Her bed side manner was amazing and I am so glad I found her!

Hiya I'm on 40mg a day too. Has your dose gone up yet and how long will you have to be on it for? Your skin is looking amazing!!

Hey there! My next appointment is in a week and they are upping my dosage from 40 mg to a weight-appropriate amount that I will be on for the remainig 4 months. I will update then. Thank you for the compliment!! Cysts are awful haha but luckily my derm gave me a months worth of antibiotics before I began accutane and it really kept it calm. What day are you on?

Oh right ok! I went up to 50mg but noticed hair thinning and got really worried so came back down to 40! I've got some pimples not with very obvious white heads and I know I'm not supposed to pop them but I really want rid of them! Have you had any luck with getting rid of whitehead spots whilst on accutane ? X

Yes! I still spot treat with a tiny dot of BP from my old Epiduo Forte prescription which I haven't had any issues with as long as I moisturize after. And I still do pop them, even though in my heart I know I shouldn't, so I don't recommend that as doctors say your skin will scar easily on accutane. But I have known people to get extractions done by their derm and mine has actually offered this to me. Maybe give them a call? I know it's so annoying to walk around with whiteheads, but I wish I had kept my fingers away more!

I've been using tea tree oil to try and help as I'm worried BP May be too harsh . I'm gutted about the spots/cysts coming up with whiteheads as I have a really social weekend coming up buttttt I keep just praying and thinking as positive as possible! I'm just worried I won't be able to cover the yellow crusty head with make up !

Yeah this whole month has been about purging for me. Every couple days I have to extract something (which I do super gently, even though I know I shouldn't UGH) and it makes me want to just stay in all the time! What I use immediately after popping is diaper cream 40% zinc oxide and it usually is gone within 2-3 days! Helps with the red mark too. I heard that it gets "worse" or purges for 4-8 weeks and then the rest is improvement. I have gone from about 5-6 pimples a week to about 3 inflamed blackhead spots in 3.5 weeks so I'm hoping the purging is coming to an end! Have you tried dermablend concealer or CoverFX pressed powder? If I have a healed red spot, I use the dermablend concealer. If it's still "raw" then I use coverFX powder and it literally makes it disappear. Hope you have a fun weekend!! Just know that this is probably one of your last weekends with breakouts. YAY!

Ok so things are looking up for you!!! That's great!! Have you got much dry skin at all and if so how bad and what are you using for it ?

I use the tea tree oil but I've heard about nappy cream too! I've not heard of that make up but I'll take a look online thank you! It's awkward to cover them when they are flaky! I may go up to 50mg tomorrow and see how I go!

Well it seems as though like 80% of my oil production has stopped but I am not unbearable dry. I just started moisturizing yesterday really, but I have extremely oily skin so I am probably not gonna have that issue til a couple months in (or so I'm hoping). Like I was an oil factory.. literally. I had to use those oil sheets 4x a day, now I don't have to use them at all. It took like 3 weeks to get to that point. My skin is still producing some pesky clogged pores so I'm hoping incorporating a gentle toner (witch hazel; only at night) and a good moisturizer with AHA will help with that. I'll let you know how that goes! Are you unbearably dry yet? What is your face wash routine?

That make up have saved my life on several occasions. I don't wear foundation because of my paranoia with clogging my pores, so all I do is use the dermablend on my red spots and let the rest of my blotchy face shine through haha. Luckily sun damage camouflages some of my post acne marks! Do you use a foundation, and do you like it? I have such a hard time finding a good one.

How did you finally convince the 3rd dermatologist to prescribe you accutane? Have you had mood swings while taking the drug?

Day 22

Hey there! So I posted my review today, but I'm actually on day 21 of my accutane journey and my skin has changed a lot so I figured I would post some updated pictures. Overall, my skin produces almost no oil and my scalp is following along the same path! I have yet to have any dry body skin issues, but I moisturize religiously after showering. Also I use a zinc dandruff shampoo and haven't had any scalp issues so far. My skin is doing great! I still get spots, but not really pimples. They're more like little inflamed blackheads or pores. I still spot treat with a tiny bit of a leftover Epiduo forte prescription and also I use diaper cream (40% zinc) on a popped pimple (this stuff is AMAZING at reducing redness and healing). My derm gave me some prednisone for the initial breakout which allowed most of my face to purge smoothly, despite a few setbacks. Here is my face in the sun yesterday, I have about 3 active "purging" spots but everything is healing nicely. I am wearing spot treatment on one of my spots FYI. Other than that I would say there is definitely progress!

I appreciate your feedback but this is a decision I have made based on my own personal choices and experiences. I am not a huge fan of unsolicited advice haha but thanks anyway!

Hi! My skin is very similar to yours. I've been having a recent breakout of cystic acne. I've tried everything else and am getting ready to start Accutane in a month. I'm really excited someone like you is going through a similar process and I'll be following your page for updates :)

Hey there!! I'm glad to hear some one in my similar situation. I am going to my one-month appointment tomorrow and I'm anxious to be upping my dosage! The first month is just your body getting adjusted to the drug but my initial break out was totally manageable and nothing cystic occurred (surprisingly!). I'm sure you'll do great and I'm always here if you need advice or just want to talk!!
