Well, I've been a busy girl. I had my consultation with Dr. Ferrari on 2/27 and he did blow me away with amazingness. I knew halfway through the consultation that he was going to do my surgery. I LOVED him, his office people, and his portfolio. I felt like he gave me an honest opinion and good information. He would require clearance from my PC and wanted an EKG, chest xray, and bloodwork. He recommended a full TT (incision would extend around to my side to make sure he got all of that big ole' roll), lipo of my upper abdomen, flanks/back, and under my chin. At that point I had decided not to do my boobs because I am terrified of losing sensation. The quote that day was $13,100, and that includes an overnight stay at his facility, which he requires with TT. I scheduled before I left that day for May 5. The quote includes a 10% discount off of his fee for scheduling that day. I got hopping on my PC clearance and had my EKG and blood work. The EKG was normal, but my sugar was slightly elevated. It was not a fasting glucose so I have to go back for a fasting. I decided I wanted to talk to him about some boobs, so I scheduled another consult for 3/17. Then, I found out that due to some unforeseen issues at work I wouldn't be able to take the time off until after the end of August. I had my 3/17 consultation and he recommended saline implants, under the muscle, going in at the armpit. I am a B cup now and told him I want to be a full C and want more fullness at the top and cleavage areas of my breasts. He said the implant would give me some lift and he did not recommend a full lift (lollipop or anchor) for several reasons. He did say that if I wanted to raise my nipples some, he would do a Bellini lift. He can do the boobs the same day as the rest, or do them separately. I got 3 more quotes that day (all included the 10% discount for booking on that first day). One quote was for the lift and implants only and was $7,160. Another was for the TT, lipo, lift, and implants and was $19,160. The last was for the TT, lipo, and implants (no lift) and was $17,210. The only quote that did not include the overnight stay was the one for the boobs only. I know I don't want two separate surgeries and re-scheduled while I was there for the TT, lipo, lift, and implants for 9/8/14. I told the liason I wasn't certain I wanted the lift, but would let them know. The surgery with everything would be about 7 1/2 - 8 hours and of course would be shorter duration if I didn't do the lift. I am really on the fence about the lift...and boobs at all to be honest. I have done a ton of research and believe the transaxillary implantation would have less risk of losing sensation. The lift would involve an incision around my entire nipple, which I think would increase the risk of losing sensation. I would LOVE to have fuller, rounder breasts, but I'm really scared of not being able to feel anything, or being able to feel less, or not having "good" feeling. My hubby is also really worried I will lose sensation (that's obviously something we both enjoy, sorry TMI) and says he's not sure it's worth the risk at all. He's a nurse and is very concerned about complications etc. He doesn't really want me to have any surgery because he doesn't think it's worth the risk, but he's totally supportive of whatever I decide. He is also a cautious person by nature. I'm down to 206lbs now and would like to lose some more before surgery. I do know that at lower weights, my boobs deflate even more and it is not cute! So, I am booked and ready to go! I just have to decide for sure what to do about the girls, if anything. Any thoughts?

Have you considered wake forest baptist hospital plastic surgery center with the senior residents? They are awesome doctors!

You definitely have great results! Were you able to look at a portfolio of work done by the residents and/or head doctor (teacher doctor, main doctor, chief, I don't know what you call it! lol)?

Hey there. I did my two surgeries separately. Two reasons. First, trying to heal from both at same time I think is problematic; getting up and down after a TT requires use of arms/upper body, breast work usually requires NOT pulling/pushing up with arms. Second, doing both surgeries at same time means you're under anesthesia for a LONG time, I don't think this is ideal (nor do many others to include doctors). I did my breasts (reduction) first, waited 4 months and then did TT. Seeing that TT has been your first focus, I'd go with that first. Just my thoughts. Best wishes as you decide what to do. Hi Suzy, hope you are well. I'm not sure that doing 2 surgeries is the way to go for me, but I go back and forth all the time. It seems I've become super indecisive now that I've actually scheduled! I don't want to have to take time off work twice, but I am concerned about the time under anesthesia. I'm concerned about being overwhelmed with pain, but a few of my friends who have had breasts and tummy done at the same time say that you don't even feel the breast pain becomes the tummy pain overrides everything. And I still can't decide to do lift with implants, just implants, or no boobs at all. I'm ridiculous!

It's a big decision. I am fortunate, I don't work outside the home anymore, so I was able to schedule around things. Also, I just wasn't sure how I'd heal, as I haven't had any surgeries etc for a LONG time. And, I was SURE I wanted the breast reduction, wasn't about TT...after reduction I was like lets do this! I've heard same as you, tummy is the bigger of the two procedures and prob has the most pain assoc with it. It's funny though, in most ways, I felt like tummy was a little easier. Best wishes deciding, :-DSuzy

Two down, one to go!

I've had two consultations in the past two weeks. The first one was with Dr. Siciliano in Hickory. He told me I needed to get down to 180 lbs before he would do surgery (I'm 209 now). He would then recommend a full tummy tuck, lipo of the flanks, and would re-evaluate lipo under my chin and of my arms after I lost the weight. He did not recommend lipo of my upper back. He apparently doesn't do EKG or chest x-ray before surgery. Even after I told him I have A LOT of heart history in my family, he still said he didn't feel it was necessary. All of the photos in his portfolio were of women a lot smaller than I am, so he obviously does not do the surgery on people who are very overweight. The quote for the TT and flank lipo was $8000. I saw Dr. Swank in Hickory today. He told me that he was comfortable doing the surgery at my current weight as long as my expectations were realistic. He told me that at my weight he would not be able to get my stomach totally flat, but I would definitely see a lot of improvement. He didn't recommend lipo of my flanks, but did feel I would see quite a bit of improvement from lipo of my back. He also felt I would see improvement from lipo under my chin. He did not recommend lipo of my arms because he felt it would just leave me with loose skin. He said it would probably take lipo and tightening of the skin with an arm lift (which I am not interested in and he did not try to push on me or talk me into at all). His take on the weight loss was a little different. He said if I have been at a stable weight for many years (I have, for 5-6 years) he doesn't necessarily recommend losing weight for surgery because it is likely I would just gain it back and that would have a negative effect on the surgery I just spent a lot of money on. He would require an EKG, full blood work up and chest x-ray before proceeding with surgery. He had many photos of women my size (and larger) in his portfolio, and the results were dramatic in all of them. The quote for full TT, lipo of my back and under my chin was $10,000. I have a consult next week with Dr. Ferrari in Matthews, but unless he blows me away with amazingness, Dr. Swank is my guy!

Sounds like you are narrowing down your choices. I think Dr Swank sounds like my doc. He explained what would work for your body and didn't "over promise". Best wishes as you make your final choice. I go to my follow up today with my doc, will post an update and pics. I'm doing fine so far. I look forward to following your journey...I'm here if you need me...just give me a shout. HUGS

First PS consultation tomorrow!! A couple of questions...

User Avatar

I have my first consult with a PS tomorrow morning. I'm really excited! My hubby is a nurse and will be going with me. I have a 3 page list of things I want to make sure are addressed/answered, so I think I have been pretty thorough in my research about what to ask (maybe too thorough lol). But I do have a couple of questions for you ladies who have been through the consultation process.
1. For those of you who took a significant other with them, did they go into the exam room with you? I don't really feel good about being naked with a doctor and talking about everything I perceive to be wrong with my body in front of my hubby. He is wonderful and supportive, but in my mind he doesn't really see the fat and flaws (ridiculous, I know). Do you think it will be possible to have the exam, and then bring hubby in to discuss everything?
2. Are there any questions you did not ask, but later realized you really should have asked?

I appreciate any insight or input any of you wonderful ladies may have!
P.S. Down another few pounds, was 209 this morning woohoo!

Your enthusiasm is evident and I am so happy for you!!! With regard to your procedures, you can do them all at once. This is important for the BBL because the surgeon will harvest the fat from your body, especially the tummy, for your buttocks. You would not have any fat left if you do the tummy tuck first. Then you would have to regain weight for the BBL. You may want to consider traveling to a surgeon who specializes in the procedures you want. I travel to my plastic surgeon because he has done 10,000 plastic surgery procedures and is extremely experienced with massive weight loss patients. My body was a mess from losing 100 pounds. He does not do the BBL, so I am not recommending him for you, just pointing out the advantages of medical travel. Good luck!!!

I took my hubby of 20 years into the exam room with me. I'm no kid (51), and I my hubby knows what bothers me about my body. Fortunately, he has loved me any shape or weight I've ever been. I am also a bigger gal, was 211lbs before surgery, and I'm surprised and amazed at what a good result I got even t my size (feel free to check out my profile, lots of pics). Bottom line, I felt better having hubby hear what I wanted from the doc, and what the docs answers were. I think if you have realistic expectations and an honest doctor, you'll be happy. Hope this helps, feel free to ask me any questions you like.

I don't have an SO but I took a couple of girlfriends with me my last two post op visits. They have now seen EVERYTHING, hahaha! Honestly, I feel more comfortable naked around them than I would have any of the guys I've dated. I had all my consults alone. Make sure you ask all your consults the same questions. One of my main issues was being able to the BA at the same time as the BL (one would not and that excluded him from my search) and if they used drains (I went with the doc who did not) because those were things that were important to me. Of course make sure they are plastic surgery board certified. Apparently some are cosmetic board certified which is not the same thing? I also wanted to see pictures of the surgeries that specific doc did, not just the practice. You have awesome thighs - I think this is really going to change your entire body and mental attitude

Thank you for the response and the compliment! My legs have always been my best feature and I'm hoping that once I get the tummy that is overshadowing them taken care of, they will start getting noticed again!

Sure. I see no reason why you could not have the exam privately and then bring your hubby in for the discussion. You are the patient. This should be conducted in whatever way makes you comfortable. You are the most important person in the room, even if the surgeon thinks it is him/herself, LOL. As for me, I went to all of my consults and surgeries alone. I did not bring my husband to anything, and I even traveled out of state for my surgery and stayed there alone in a hotel for weeks. I am very private that way. I feel that my health is between me and my doctor.

My hubby is a nurse too and he did go in with me for my very first consultation, but I was very uncomfortable with him there watching the doc lifting, pulling and pinching my fat and pannus. Hubby is the best and I know it's my issue, but I just wanted to disappear! He did not go with me to the consultation with the surgeon that I'll be using and I felt much more at ease and could ask a lot of questions. Hubby has questions and will be going with me to my pre-op to discuss any concerns he has and post-op instructions. I agree with My Bariatric Life, it's my body, my health and I'm pretty private that way too. Best of luck to you and congrats on your weight loss!!
