6 Months Post-op and Having Doubts

I got a hair transplant (FUT) about 6 months ago and I'm struggling to feel good about it. From many resources I've read (and my post-op check-in) I understand it's still early and I'm trying to be patient.

The surgery itself wasn't too bad. Only the injections hurt. I started to feel pain again towards the end, but the doctor administered additional medication and I was back to feeling nothing. The recovery was awful however. Sleeping was incredibly uncomfortable for 2 weeks and not great for at least a month after the procedure.

I had heavy swelling. I took a week off work which I'm glad I did. I mention this because my doctor (and reviews online) suggest that you can bounce back soon after the procedure or that the procedure is not a big deal. You never know how you'll recover and I was one of those folks that needed more time.

I was worried about my scar for a bit since it was raised but it's now pretty well hidden. I have long hair and don't plan on every cutting it short so that should never be a problem.

I got the transplant to fill in my temples. Now 6 months out, one side is more full than the other. Differences between the two sides is not uncommon. My concern is that during the procedure, I had two techs/assistants working on each side. The side that is now more filled in is the side where a tech spend more time and I felt more "pricks." There is a noticeable difference between the two sides and I'm unhappy right now at the progress (or lack thereof) of the sparse side. Especially since there seem to be large, empty gaps.

The front hairline is also growing in incredibly sparse and wiry. The front is the hardest to hide so I'm hoping it gets better. I have to wear a headband to cover it when I go out.

I also noticed "pitting" along the front of the hairline which is concerning.

Given how painful the recovery was, the huge expense ($10/graft), I really hope the next 6+ months resolve my issues. I do not want to repeat the procedure and if I have to, I will likely go to a different doctor.

Hi sorry you are struggling I added my review yesterday and I didn't find the experience as smooth as I expected based on the reviews I have read over the years. I'm only 2 days post op now and the swelling kicked in, my headband is tight across my eyebrows and it's giving me a headache! Sleep is an hour here and there propped up. I hope your growth comes in soon it can take the year so try to be patient if you can. Fingers crossed we will be glad we took this journey soon. Take care.

Thank you for the well wishes. I hope your recovery goes smoothly and that you’re able to get good rest.

I too found that reviews of recovery were overwhelming positive and not at all similar to what I experienced. Relative to reviews, I had pretty aggressive swelling for a week. The swelling migrated from the side of head to my cheeks to my jowls. It looked hilarious but also not easy and I’m glad I was able to take off work.

This review is for a hair transplant procedure. While Dr. Schreiber may be a good plastic surgeon, I recommend you see someone else for a hair transplant, especially if you’re a woman. I learned this lesson the hard and painful way — while there may be 15000 surgeons who can do a decent nose job or tummy tuck, only a few can do high quality hair transplants, and even fewer can do so for women.

My procedure shows neither skill nor artistry. The issues with my hair transplant include lack of density overall and uneven density on the sides different techs worked on, masculine hairline shape, wiry growth, and plugginess/pitting.

I can camouflage many of these issues but I shouldn’t have to. I got this done to boost my confidence and instead, it’s done the opposite. I’m looking into a corrective procedure which is always more difficult than if I had just gotten a good procedure done the first time around.

Don’t make the same costly mistake I did. He charges a premium price ($10/graft) and quality is simply not there.
