My brother and I had what is known as classic androgenetic alopecia. Being in our late thirties, we were not sold on the idea of balding so early in our lives, as we had just started our families and we were just beginning to progress in our careers. Therefore, we packed our bags and headed to Istanbul to get the help we needed at an affordable price. We both live in San Francisco, and after weighing our options, an international trip made more financial sense than spending an arm and a leg on local services, yet we could get even better care at a fraction of the price. We both got dhi, which was our preferred option since the grafts spend minimal time outside the body and thus have the highest rate of survival. My surgeon’s focus was on filling in my crown, as this is quite hard to fill, and he used 3,500 grafts to do this. My brother’s case was less severe as his thinning was mainly in his mid-scalp, and he only needed 2,000 grafts to improve his hair density. Both surgeries were very successful, and within three days of our post-op checkup, we were both on flights back home. We are now 3 months post-op and are currently dealing with shedding. We both knew that this would happen, but we could not help but feel a bit robbed because we were really enjoying our new heads of hair. But we know that this is just a phase.
