Nearly 10 Years in the Making
I had been researching gynecomastia surgery since about my freshman year in high school, and after almost 10 years of wanting to do it, I finally got to a point in my life where I could go through with it. After having a couple phone conversations with a couple different doctors, I set up a consultation with Dr. Maier at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center. He has been very professional and understanding from day one. Originally I was looking at just having the gynecomastia gland removed, but Dr. Maier also recommended liposuction. I was hesitant to do that, and originally scheduled my procedure for just gland removal, but at the pre-op appointment just 2 days before the procedure, Dr Maier still felt that lipo was necessary for me to get the results I wanted. I need to point out that while he insisted multiple times that I would benefit more from lipo than just from gland removal, I never felt that Dr. Maier was pushing me into something I didn’t want to do. After more thought, I realized that even while I was very physically fit in high school, I had been troubled by fat deposits in my chest that I couldn’t get rid of. I decided to trust Dr. Maier’s instincts and expertise and agreed that gland removal and lipo together would be best for me. His team was also able to work with me on pricing and gave me a great package deal for both.
I arrived at 6:30 A.M. on the day of the procedure. I was initially a little nervous upon arrival, and at one point I got extremely light headed during the pre-op procedures, but the whole team was very professional and accommodating. Once I actually got into the operating room, I felt completely relaxed and at ease. The surgery went through without any issues.
Post op care has been fantastic as well. I had some slight trouble with one of the small lipo incisions closing up, but I was able to discuss it with Dr. Maier through text messages and he was quick to respond on how to take care the incision. At the one week follow up, he cleaned the area and advised further on how to manage it. By the end of the second week, it was no longer an issue. There was naturally some stiffness and soreness for a few weeks afterwards, but the compression vest helped greatly limit the pain. My wife had to assist me in removing and putting on the vest for about 3 days, but I was able to return to work 5 days after the procedure with just mild discomfort (had procedure on a Wednesday, returned the following Monday). After about 3 and half weeks, I was able to buy second a compression vest that was a little less restricting but still held everything firmly. I wore the compression vest daily (except for when I showered) for 8 weeks, so I had very minimal discoloration from bruising and the swelling was never excessive. The only thing I experienced long term discomfort with was sleeping. I slept flat on my back for the first 3 to 4 weeks, partially because I was worried about moving too much early on in the recovery. Once my fully range of motion came back without any discomfort, I was able to sleep normally again, even while wearing the compression vest.
I’ve just had my 3 month follow up, and I couldn’t be happier with my results so far. From a mental-health stand point, I can’t express how much this has done for me. Previously I couldn’t even sit in my own house without constantly thinking about the appearance of my chest, and that is not an exaggeration. It was on my mind literally every second that I was awake and had been for almost a decade. I had so many shirts I had gotten from family members for Christmas and birthdays that I wouldn’t wear because they didn’t do enough to hide the puffiness of my chest. Since about the 5 week mark after surgery, I’ve worn probably every single one of them because I no longer have to worry about how my chest looks in them. I’ve been working out regularly for almost a month now, so I’m very excited to see where I’m at in another 3 months. I would recommend Dr. Maier to anybody considering this procedure. I am very glad I listened to his instincts about having the lipo as well as I think that has done wonders for the overall results.
