After being diagnosed for the 3rd time in my life...
After being diagnosed for the 3rd time in my life with ductile carcinoma insitu, I immediately drove to South Shore Surgical Specialists (SSSS) in West Islip, NY to make an appointment.
I saw Dr. Anthony Capizzi who explained he'd perform a simple double mastectomy. He encouraged me to come back to the office as soon as the next day to meet with the plastic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Landon to discuss the reconstruction process. (Dr. Keith Durante and Dr. Capizzi performed my previous lumpectomies and the mammocyte procedure in 1998 and 2006, respectively.)
Since this was my 3rd bout in nearly 18 years, knowing I was in great hands at SSSS, I knew Dr. Landon would have my best interest at heart. His extreme attentiveness began from my initial appointment, to surgery, to reconstruction to bi-weekly "fills" to subsequent office visits. No stone is left unturned with Dr. Landon! I even picked up on a few new vocabulary words during many of our conversations! (New vocabulary words...no extra charge!) Dr. Landon has a very kind and thoughtful bedside manner. He knew and understood this was my 3rd experience, but this time, breast conserving surgery was no longer an option. My SSSS surgeons have always been number 1 in my book. These doctors are real. They care and have treated me like a human being from the moment I walked into the office, and Dr. Landon was no different. The SSSS staff is thorough and caring, too. Nurse Evelyn Demers is second to none and has been with me since the onset of my journey 18 years ago!
The first few days after the bilateral mastectomy were indeed a challenge, yet, Dr. Landon was there for me and encouraging me each step of the way, telling me I would feel better everyday thereafter. For the most part I feel great and have more peace of mind. The tissue expanders have been likened to "tortoise shells" by other women in stories I've read about on the internet. As for me, although they aren't the most comfortable "things", in the busyness of my day, I don't even notice them. I am 5 and a half months out of surgery. Next stage is fat grafting for contouring, which I will be reviewing and discussing with Dr. Landon upon my next office visit in June. Because of a few challenges faced as a result of my previous radiated skin, and as discussed in detail on the onset of my consultation, Dr. Landon is taking my procedure slowly. He explains everything along the way without any hesitation. Truth be told, I feel much better physically and emotionally than I thought I ever would! I am grateful for Dr. Landon's patience and care.
My attitude is upbeat, which included wearing a "fake nose and glasses" into my 2nd and 3rd surgeries over the years. Surgery with a smile for all parties involved! I am also pleased Dr. Landon has shared his passion for birds with me, which has led me to look up more species of birds and to remind myself to enjoy God's majestic beauty along the way. Life is to be lived and enjoyed even amidst a few challenges!
I highly recommend Dr. Jonathan Landon for any of your plastic surgery needs. Tell him I sent you and he'll be glad to sit with you and squelch you worries!
