So, I'm 22 and female in case anyone is wondering, and my surgery is scheduled for August! I don't live in the United States, so I'm flying in to Los Angeles a few days before my surgery and leaving a couple of days after the cast is removed. I'm very anxious about it.

My main concerns:
1) ANESTHESIA: I've never gone through anesthesia, so i'm actually really, really scared.
2) SORE THROAT: Apparently the worst part about recovery is the sore throat everyone gets because of the tube they put in your throat from the anesthesia, and because you breathe through your mouth for a few days. I'm dreading it!
3) SPREADER GRAFTS: I hope inserting spreader grafts won't make my nose look wider! One of the reasons i'm having rhinoplasty is to actually narrow the nose.
4) ACCEPTANCE: My own reaction to my new nose. It's gonna feel so strange looking at my self with a different nose... I wonder how easy/hard it'll be to accept it.

Please share your experiences with me! :-)

Btw - (sorry if this is TMI) - but I'll be menstruating on my surgery day. Do I need to tell my doctor? Does it even matter?

The sore throat is not really bad. I am sure you had it at one point when you had a cold. Just get some throat drops and drink lots of fluids during recovery. Good luck.

My throat didn't actually bother me much, so don't stress about it just yet :). Right after the surgery i had a feeling as if i am about to get a cold, but it went away by the end of the day. On the day of a surgery I was on day 3 of my cycle, wasn't a big deal. Good luck!

Hi! I had my nose done by Dr. Grigoryants about 12 weeks ago and LOVE it! Don't worry about the sore throat- I had ZERO issue with that, it was not sore AT ALL.. I think it is really dependent on how good your anesthesiologist is. Modern day anesthesia carries very little risk (especially for a non-life threatening procedure such as a rhino-- don't worry about that at all) you fall asleep and wake up feeling as though you have had a good nap. The spreader grafts have not made my nose look wider and I had no issues with my breathing before the surgery, but actually breathe even better now! I can't speak to the whole "acceptance issue"-- I really didn't have a horrible nose to begin with, and have not once felt nostalgic for my old nose (aside from the 3rd day when the swelling is the worst). This procedure was a walk in the park for me, no pain, no sore throat and I was eating normal food the evening after the procedure. Dr. G is very skilled and I have no complaints at all regarding any part of the process! Best of luck to you :) PS. If you need a place to stay, I recommend renting a condo from Rosebowl Vacation Rentals-- a few other girls on here have used them as well and it is MUCH better for recovery than staying in a cramped hotel room !

Thank you so much!! I'm glad you love your new nose! I hope I feel the same way about mine :-) was it your first time to go through anesthesia? I heard scary stories about waking up feeling nauseous and throwing up bright red (Hollywood-looking) blood..? >_
June 2, 2014
So when I spoke with my anesthesiologist there and the nurse, I asked that they not put any added painkillers in my IV after the surgery as pain killers make me very nauseous. I did throw up blood in the recovery room (as a lot of blood drains into your stomach during the procedure)-- this was not a big deal AT ALL and I felt so much better after. I had them put Zofran (an anti-nausea) in my IV before I left and I felt no nausea throughout the rest of the recovery (probably in large part due to the fact that I took no narcotic painkillers, just tylenol). It was my 3rd time going under general anesthesia, once prior for ACL repair, and the other for wisdom tooth removal.

Thank you for starting your story here on RealSelf! Here's a link about anesthesia that I always find really comforting and like to point people to. I went under anesthesia in 2011 and it felt just like Couture Girl said, like I'd had a lovely nap.

Thank you so much for sharing this link! I am scheduled for a rhinoplasty/septoplasty/turbinectomy toward the end of the month and what I'm most terrified of is the anesthesia. I'm 31 and this will be the first time I'm having any type of surgery. This link definitely helped put me at ease!

Obsessed with RealSelf

Maxxyz
So I'm finding myself obsessing over rhinoplasty reviews. I don't even read or watch my TV shows anymore before I go to bed! I can't wait to get my new nose, I actually called my Dr.'s office today to check if there was a sooner appointment. Ahhh I'm so impatient! I'll probably be impatient about healing too.

In the first email i sent him, i asked a few questions and one of then was "will i need a graft?" He said only spreader grafts to prevent collapse

June 4, 2014
sorry i meant when did you call to set the day of your surgery? im curious how far out he is booking :)
June 4, 2014
Oh lol sorry. So i called about a month ago and the soonest available appointment was in October. I didn't take the appointment, i kept calling almost every day and hoped i'd get lucky and take someone's cancelled appointment. And it happened! I called a couple of days ago to check if there was an even sooner appointmen than August, but the soonest now is end of November. So you need to call about 6 months ahead..

Ahhhh how exciting!!!! :D I am getting it done with him as well but all the way in December. I am so happy to have finally found the surgeon I've always wanted.

August 6, 2014
I'm so anxious!!! >_< my surgery is in two weeks!
July 20, 2014
Good luck, August is right around the corner! I can't wait to see what he does!
August 6, 2014
Ahhh i can't wait either!! I'm so scared. I really hope i don't regret this!!! Because i am not looking to change my nose, i just wanna improve it! :( I hope i don't look toooo different and then hate myself forever, lol. Also, i'm not a very patient person, so i think i'm gona fall into depression the first few months after rhinoplasty.

Paid!

Maxxyz
So i made the full payment today (two weeks prior to surgery). I'm so nervous now it feels so real! The problem is that I actually think i'm pretty, so i really hope i don't regret changing my nose... I guess having doubts is normal, right?
